AttheProtestantChurchConferenceinBelfastlately,speakingon theprobabilityoftheearlygranting ofSelf-GovernmenttoIreland,Rev. They were men in theearlyprimeof life,robust andactive,and theyhadnotbeenworstedinthe struggleforexistenceathome.They leftpositionsoftolerablecomfortin thehopeofrealisingsomepartof thegoldenpromisessetforthincertainofficialandotherpublications. whichhadbeenbroughttotheirnotice;andtheytookwiththemamoderatecaPital.Theyhaveallbeen welleducated,andoneofthemat leastpossessesatalentforgraphic description. Buttheemigrantwithoutcapital, awaybeyondtherabbit-prooffences, twoorthreedays'journeyfroma railwaystation,hasnottheremotestchanceofreachingasecureposition.Hisstoresareexhaustedbeforehehasevenclearedtheground andinordertolivehemustseek employment. Hegoestowork fora"cocky,"-anewsettler,alittlefurtheradvancedinthestruggle thanhimself.

Thehistoryoftheirpersonalexperiencesmaybebrieflytold.They hadbeenwarnedbeforesettingout thatitisimpossibletogrowwheat proatatnyatadistanceofmore thanfifteenortwentymilesfroma railwaystation.Everythingthey sawandheardaftertheirarrival, confirmedthiswarning,andthelettersarelargelydevotedtoexplainingandemphasisingtheconditions, whichmakeittrue.Onapplyingat theLandOffice,however,theydiscoveredthattheGovernmenthad nolandtooilerwithinthelimit. Whentheobjectionwasraised,the landagentassuredthemthatspur linesareSeineconstantlyrunout assoonasadistrictissettledup. Meantime,however,,theywouldhave toliveandtheydecidednotto maketheexperiment.Fortunately, theyhadthestrengthofmindtoresistpersuasion.
