executedatNenagh,andtheirbodiesburiedinunconsecratedground, withintheprisonwalls.Recently, thejailpremises,abandonedforthe purposesofaprison;passedintothe chargeofthegoodSistersofMercy Afewdaysagothenodiesofthe brotherswereexhumed,placedinsolidcoffinsofoak,andconveyedto theMortuaryChapeloftheChurch ofSt.MaryoftheRosary,Nenagh, wheretheremaineduntillastweek, whentheywere'takento1nuehmore, abouttwentyIrishmilesdistant, andlaidintheirlastresting-place, inthechurchyardoftheirnativeparish.Thefuneralprocessionwasof extraordinary'dimensions.Theday wasobservedasageneralholiday, withinalargeareaofthelineof route.TheshopsinThurlesremainedclosedandshutteredthroughouttheday',andthoseinNenagh, Florrisoleigh,Templemore,andother placeswerealsoclosedwhilethe funeralwaspassingthrough.Crowds travelledrotalonefromdistant partsofTipperarybutfromdistriets intheadjoiningcounties,toparticipateinthegreatPublicactofreparationtothememoryoffthemurderedbrothers,andmanybrassand fifeanddrumhandsattended.The processionbeforeitreachedLoughmorewasestimatedtobeabout fourorfivemilesinlength. Theday'sproceedingscommenced withanimpressivereligiousservice, inthechurchatNenagh.Solemn RequiemHighMasswascelebrated.

THEINNOCENCEOFTHEMcCORMACKS ofthemurderofMr.Ellisiscertainfromthetestimonyoftheman whoreallyperpetuatedthedeed.He frequently'duringlifeadmittedthe crime,andalwaysexoneratedthe brothersfromparticipation,direct orindirect,in its commission.Andthere,is,moreover. independentandconclusiveevidence, thathewastheassassin.Hehad the"agrarian"motiveforthemurder.Agrarianexterminationmade IrelandtheRachelofNations. "Woetoeauwhojoinhouseto house,andlayfieldtofield,even totheendoftheplace."-(Isaias, v.,8).Appallinglyterribletotell withinlivingmemoryagrarianeater: minationmainlycontributedtothe reductionofthepopulationofthe unitedparishesofLoughmoreand aestleiliey-twoparishesfamedfor themilitaryprowessoftheirsonsin theJacobitedays-from8,0ooto asoo.Elliswasthemostnotorious andhatedoftheexterminating handsconcerned.Hismurdererwas throughhim,undernoticetoquit fromhisholding,whichthoughsterileandrack-ranted,wasancestral, hishomeinErin,andnear,tothe cemeterycontainingthegravesofhis fathers.Andhehalthe"moral," motiveforthemurder.Thatmotive wasforhimthedeterminingone.It iscertainthatElliswasimmoral. Andthemenwho-hadmurderedhim, believedththehadmadeedulterous edvan:Ttowardshissister,thewife ofapersonconnectedwiththeestateofwhichhe,Ellis,wasthefactor.Theworldknowshowthat crimeandinsultwouldinfuriatethe Irishman,ofspirit.Historians,tell usthatitwastheimmoralityof theEnglishsoldiersinthiscountry outragingtheproudandgrandidea ofthepeopleastotheirdomestic typesoftheMadonna,whichprecipitatedthebloodyinsurrectionof '98.AndthemurdererofElliswas spirited,intrepidandrelentless. I. shallendregardinghimbythestatement,thatwh.n.hesawtheresult 'ofhisdeedinthesentencetodeath oftheinnocentM'Cormacks,andno chanceofreprieve,hetookcounsel, astoavowinghimselfthemurderer, betwastoldinreplythattheact thenwouldnotavailforthesavingofthebrothers.AlsotheinnocenceoftheM'Cormackscfthe murderofEllisiscertainfromtheir publicdeclarationjustbeforeexecution.Suchdeclarationiftheywere guilty,wouldhavebeenmostsinful.

Atfirstsight,perhapsareligious bodymightappeartobeuponadifferentplanesinceitisacollection ofindividualswhoarestriving,towardsasupernaturaleoal.Even here,however,patriotism,oresprit decorps,hasanacknowledgevalue. NoonewillquestionthatthereligiouslifeoftheJewswasgreatl sustainedbythefactthattheirpatriotismasanationwasintimately associatedwithandentwinedround theirtheology.Thereligionofthe japareseislittlemorethanthe spiritualisationoftheirpatriotism.Andwehavesimilarevidenceatour doors.ThusitisobviousthatEpiscopalianisminEnglandandPresbyterianisminScotlandretaintheir Powerverylargelybecausetheyhave becomemergedinthenationalpatriotismofeachcountry.Evenmore emphaticells'isthisthecaseinIreland.Therethesetwogreatpowers, thestrongestpassionsthatanimate society,aresointimatelyconnected, astoformalmostasingleforce. Itisagreatthing,ofcourse,that wehaveintheYoungMen'ssociety ;arallyinggroundfortheCatholics ofthedistrict,butitshould oe somethingmore.Thepromotionof whist-drives,billiardcompetitions, anddramaticentertainments,isvery usefulforkeepingourcongregations togetherandfosteringsocialunion. Butalecturecourseshouldbean essentialfeature,anditshouldbear rangedwithadefiniteobjectinview Aicertainnumberofthelectures shouldbespeciallydevotedtothe historyofCatholicism,itsglories, itstriumphs,itstrials.Andso withthelibrarybooksuponsuch themesshouldbeverylargelyinevi dentinandtopromotetheuse of thesebooks,classescouldveryuse fullybeformedforthestudyofparticularperiodsofour'history.Methodswillnaturallyvarywiththe circumstancesofdifferentlocalities. Butwhatevermeansaretaken,they mustbesystematicallyfollowedif wearetogaintheendwehavein view,ifourpeoplearetorisetoa PropercoacePtionofthepridethey shouldfeelinbelongingtothenoblestandgrandestsocietyinhistory-iftheywouldreallypossessatrue Catholicpatriotism.
Inpaganlandsandpagantimes womanwasconsideredachatteland aslavetheplaythingofman bawdtoministertohisbestialpassionsandtohecastasidewhenhe weariedofher.
Wheninthefullnessoftimethe' Christpreparedtohonourallhumankindbyassumingtheformof manandredeeminghimfrominiquity,Hepluckedthethreebrightest jewelsfromthestemheavensand set.theminagoldencrown. The HolyGhostcalledHisAngelfrom onhigheandbadehimplacethistrigemmed,thricesanctifiedcrownof Christianwomanhooduponthebrow oftheVirginatNazareth,andgreet her."Hail,fullofgrace,theLord iswiththee;blessedartthouamongwomen."
Thusattheverythreholdof Christianitywomanwassnatched fromthethraldomandslaver,in whichshehadbeenheldthroughout theagestopandertothelustof man,andplacedonapedestalso high,thatsincetheneverymanworth;thenamehaslovedandrevered herasasuperiorbeing.GodHimselfchosetheVirginforHisMother,andwhenHediedonthecross.
