Atthemonthlymeetingofthe TaghmonBranchoftheU.I.L.,Enniscorthy,VeryRev.CanonFurlong, P.1'.,V.F.,presided.Therewasa largeattendanceofmembers.

OnthemotionofMr.John.Ryan, secondedbyMr.MarkBrowne, the.following.resolutionwasadopted unanimously:-

"Thatwethoroughlyapproveof thepolicyoftheIrishPartyin abstainingfromvotingontheBudgetquestion,telieving,as,wedo, thatwhiletheBudgetcontainsmany fairandadmirableprovisions,it includesothersthatunfairlyincreasetheburdenoftaxationfroir whichIrelandisalreadysuffering, and,thereforecouldnotheconsistentlysupportedbytheNationalrepresentatives."

CanonFurlongsaidhethoughtthe Budgetinmanyrespectsasplendid Budget,andspeakinggenerallyit placedtheburdensontheshoulders ofthepeoplebeetabletobear them.itaimedatthewealthand theluxuriesoftherich,butitavoidedthenecessitiesofthepoor.It didnotthethefoodofthepeople. thoughthepresentGovernmenthad loweredthedutiesonteaandsugar sinceitcameintooffice.Butfair, thoughtheBudgetmighthe,inits generalprinciples,therewasno doubtithitIrelandprettyheavily, thoughperhaps,notsoheavilyas somepoliticiansforpersonalorpartypurposeswishtomakeout.The questionwasathornyandcomplicatedone.Eventheexpertsseemedpuzzledby.it.Onedaya.clever lawyerwrotetothepaperstoprove thatcertainclausesoftheBudget wouldinflictintolerableburdenson certainclassesoftheIrishpeople, andthenextanovallycleverlawyerwroteandprovedwithequal clearnessthatthosesameincriminatedclauseswouldinflictnoburden whateveruponanyclassofIrishmen, Onethingwascertain,thatIreland, alreadyovertaxed,shouldnotbear anyadditiontothatburden. TheIrishmembersdidtheirbestto haveherspecialcasetreatedwith specialconsideration,butasthey failedtosecurethefullmeasureof justicetheysought,theywouldnot givetheirsupport'toeheBudget whileitwasstillmoreimpossible forthemtovotewiththeTories and'theHouseofLords,thedeclaredanddeadlyenemiesetHomeRule theLandBillandofeverymeasure thatmadeforthefreedomandprosperityofIreland.
