Anothersideofhischaracter,the religionselementwasrevealedinits fullstrengthinaremarkableway Hewasaverysincereandearnest RomanCatholic,hutbysomemeans probablybecausehisTealcharacter wasnotknown.onemangotin withth,headsoftheLeaveatthe timewhenmostofthemhadfound LitwisetoescapefromourtoopressinginquiriesbyaflittoParis.

TheothermantowhomIrefer, wasablustering,atheisticalfellow, withafoulmouth,whichw,asavery rarethingamongtheleadersofthe IrishRevolutionists,whetherofthe IrishRepublicanBrotherhood(whith wastheFenianorganisation),orth; LandIea/gilt,.

Onedaythisfellowlaunchedout inatoile%ofblasphemousabuseof theFrenchandallotherCatholies. Tothesurpriseofeveryonepresent, Mr.Eganwhowasaverygentlemanly,quietman.tookupthequarrel,and,threateningthebulbwhat hewoutddoishecontinuedtoattackhisreligion,sofrightenedhim thatheafterwardstooktheopportunityaffordedbythearrestofseveraloftheleaders,includingMr. Parnell.toquittheLeagueandPoliticalworkaltogether.

LORDLEITRIMMURDERED. ForatimetheLandLeagueoral theAmnestyAssociation,bothof whichusedallthepowersofeloquencepossessedbytheirmembersto keeptheex-tremistsratiet,certainly lessenedtheamountofbadcrime. Comparativelyfreefromthemore murderousformo:conspiracythough thecountrywasduring seventies.therewerelocalmurtergroups continuallyterrorisingothersinto actingwiththem,andoccasionally, therewouldcomesomenewstoryof thebrutalslaying'ofanobnoxious landlord.

LoadLeitrimwasoneofthevictims,andhissecretaryandcardriverwereallshotinoneattempt theassassinsescaping.Thenews reachedusinApril,1878,anditwas quiteapparentthemurdererswere a'randofverydesperatemen,for theattackwasmadewithinafew BandsofLordLeitrim'shouseat @ulroyBay,Co.Donegal,andin sightofhi,oAnsereand..

APParently,judgingbythewounds, themurdererswerearmedonlywith shot-guns,hutwhenLordLeitrim fell,hedroppedhisrevolver,for hisarmwasfracturedasifbya bullet,andtheweaponhadbeen emptiedfromeverychamber. The Policegottoworkpromptly but althoegthhislordship'ssrvant couldsayhe sawtwomen ingraycoatsstrugglingwith themurderedmen,andtwoothers, orthesamewithturnedclothing, whoweredressedinblack,rowing acrossthebayaftertheattack,the Policeobtainednoassistancefrom thepeoplethereabouts,andthemen gotaway ThewholeofthecountiesofDerryandDonegalwereenclosedbyachainofpoliceanddetectiveofficers,andthoughmanearrestsweremadeitwasfoundimpossibletogetevidenceofaconvincingcharacter,ortosecureconviction.
