Outof609,674 acresavailableforagriculture,there ares'-'7,o6oacresundergrass.and only32,614intillage.Thisboycatoftheploughmaybejustified farmers,saysDr.O'Dwyer,assert thattillagedoesnotpay,butexpertsholdthatwhilstunintelligent tillagedoesnotpay,up-to-datetillagedoespay,andpaywell. Itisofficiallycalculatedthatmore thanio,000peoplehavebeendrowned,carriedawaybytheirresistible current,manyhaveteenburiedalive undertheruinsoftheirownhouses, whilsttensofthousandsoffamilies havebeenlefthomelessanddestitute. Itisimpossibletodescribethe poverty,themiseryanddestitution ofthepeople;manyofthemChristiansandheathens,havecometo thepriestsforhelp.

MeanwhilethePricesofthefood stuffshaverisen,andthegreatproblembeforeusishowtofeedthe nearlyeonorphans,widowsandold Peopleshelteredinourinstitutions. Thebuildingshavebeengreatlydamagedallthecompoundwallsof ourConventsandOrphanageshave beendemolished;severalchapelsand the"Widows'Home"havebeenlevelledtotheground,whilstsome otherbuildings,beinginadangerous ondition,havehadtobevacated.

FromtheCathedralparishthe Rev.FatherManganwenttoWest Perth,togiveaRetreattothe ChildrenofMaryattendingthere, ItbeganonlastMonday,night,and isbeingattendedwithgreatresults. TheladiesoftheCathedralperish whointerestedthemselvesincateringforthechildrenoftheparish onSt.Patrick'sDay,mustfeelquite satisfiedwiththeirefforts.Quitea substantialsurplusremainedafter Payingallexpenses,andtheCommitteedecidedonlastMondatnight tohandoverthesurplusto St. Anne's Society, whose fundsarealmostexhausted. Theycouldnotputittoabetter purpose,becauseitwillhespenton ifeedingthehungryandrelievingthe distressofthePoorandwretched.

Thursday,25thMarchwastheday chosenforthecomeinedCatholic SchoolChildren'sPicnicatGreenbushes.ThedaywasabeautifulOne frommorningtodewyevening.The childrenattendingtheBridgetown ConventSchooltookthe10.20a.m. trainarrivingatGreenbushesabout lee)a.m. Therecreationreserve wassoonreachedandpresenteda charmingappearancewhenthelittle childrenintheirbrightdressesran upanddownenloy'ingthemselvesin theirowninnocentways. Amost sumptuousluncheonwaspreparedon theglioundsbytheladies'committee.Afterluncheonasportsprogrammewascarriedout,thevarious racesbeingwellcontested,andthe honoursheinefairlywelldividedbetweenGreenbushesandBridgetown.

TheCricketMatchwasveryinterestingAlfandWillieMcCulloch PlayedasplendidgameforGreenhushes,whileLeslieWilkensonand GeorgeNelsonfoughtwellforBridge town.ThehonourswenttoGreenbushesby45runs.GreenbushesalsowontheCricketers'testrace;but thelastevent,theTugofWar.was valiantlywonbytheBridgetown Boysafteramostexcitingcontest. Thehoopraceswereveryamusingbothfromtheirnoveltyand fromthefactthatthefinishwasalwayscloseandexciting.

Thegirlshadtheirownracesand skippingcontests,andtheGreenhushesgirlsgaveaveryniceexhibitionofdrillonthegrounds.

OnlastSaturdaytheRev.Fathsr Kopf,P.S.M.,accompaniedbyRev. FatherWhite,returnedtoPerthfrom avisittotheBeagleBayMission forAborigines.TheVeryRev.?etherKopf-whoistheProvincialof theGermanprovinceforthePious SocietyofMissions,waswellpleasedwiththingsinBeagleBay.He wentthoroughlyintoeverythingcon nectedwiththeMission.Thepotentialitiesofthepeace,theprospect ofthemission,itsfinancialdifficulties,itspastefforts,thechildren, wereallsupervisedbythisenergetic aidfar-seeingmissionary.Hemade severalchangesforthebetter,and heisbynomeanspessimisticofthe ultimatesuccessofBsagleBay.He expressed'himselfnotalittledisappointmentwiththe'qualityofthe land-whichisheldinfeebythe Mission.Wereitnotfeethebeautiful.wellsofpure,freshwater,he wouldregarditasofverylittle, consesuence. Thecattlerunlease isthemainsupportofBeagleBay. Hundredspfsplendidcattlearelost yearlyinthewells.Theysinkinto themuddyorboggysoil,intheir effortstoreachthegreenandluxurious,herbage,andthedroversfind themdeadafterafewhours.
