AspecialmeetingoftheBelfast Conservative'Associationwasheld recentlyintheUlsterMinorHallto receivereportofCentralCommittee uponre-organisation.The.Marquis ofLondonderrypreeideti,anda schemeforthere-organisationofthe UnionistforcesinBelfastwasadopted. LoriLondonderrysaidifthey wishedtoimprovethePresentconditionoftheUnionistPartyinBelfastitwasnecessarythatthere shouldbesomeschemeorreorganisation. Atpresenttheyhadonly twomembersinParliamentrepresentativeoftheUnionistfeelingo; thecity.EnglandlookeduponBelfastasastrongholdofunionism, andiftheywishdte)Provetheir determinationtomaintaintheUnion,they.mustwinbac':twoseats thattheUni-mistPartyhadlost withinrecentyears.(Applause.) Inconsequenceofenquiriesmade fromtimetotime,respectingthe celebrationofthisMass,itmaybe welltogiveabriefaccountofits origin,andtheconditionstobeobservedinitscelebration.

TheMassiscalled"Gregorian" becauseitwasfirstintroducedby PopeGregory;,surnamedtheGreat, onaccountofhisgreatlearningand sanctity,andhisdistinguishedservicestotheChurchandtomankind ingeneral.AfterSt.Peter,hewas Perhapsthegreatestornamentofthe papacy..BeforeGregorywascalled topresideovertheUniversalChurch hewasaBenedictineMonkandAbgotofSt.Andrew'sMonasteryin Rome.Afterhehadbeenraisedto thepapacy,oneofthemonksinhis oldmonasteryofSt.Andrew'sdied underpeculiarcircumstances.After thedeathofthismonkithadbeen foundthathehadsomemoneyin hispossessionatthetimeofdeath, unaccountedfor,andinviolationof hisvowofpoverty.Thereigning Abbotandhisconsultorsafterdeliberation,withsorrowcametotheconclusionthatthissumwassufficient toconstituteamortalsin;and, therefore,theunfortunatemonkhad diedinastateofdeliberatemortal sin.Inotherwordshissoulwas lostandhis(bodydeprivedofChristianburial.

ThemonksconsultedwithPope 1Gregorywhatwastobedonerepardingtheprayersandsuffragesof hisbrethren-themonks-forthesoul oftheirformerbrother.ThePope deputedoneofthefathersofSt.. Andrew'stocelebrateMassevery dayforthirtydaysfortherepose ofthesoulofthereligious.

Onthemorningofthelothday, asthepriestwhocelebratedtheGregOrianMasseswasmaking his thanksgivinginsilencebeforethe altar.hewassurprisedtoseethe deceasedmonkstandingbeforehim, radiantwithjoyandhappiness.He thankedthepriest,andthankedhim againandagain,andentreatedhim tothank.PoneGregory,forhaving orderedthoseMassestobesaid "Theamount.ofmoney,"hecontinued,"inmypossessionwasnot sufficienttoconstituteamortalsin. Such,however.wasthecaseall theyoungandoldmenoftheparish,rollinguptoderivethatbenefitandknowledge,inseparablefrom adoctor'slecture.Themembersof thelocalC.Y.M.S.,wereespecially pleasedwiththelargeattendanceof menfromPerth manyofwhom wereformerly,connectedwiththe PerthC.Y.M.S. Anotherpeculiarityofthemindis thatwearedouble-brained,thusin theeventofonesideofthebrain beinginiured,theotherorremainingportion.willcarryoutthefunc-

tionspreviouslyperformedbythe injuredbrain.Whilsttherightside ofthebodyismanagedbytheleft brain,theleftsideofthebodyis workedbytherightbrain.Oneof themostseriousofcomplaints,viz Paralysis,usuallyoriginatesfrom thebrainthisafflictionbringsin itstrainlossofallpowerinthe bodyendtemporarysuspensionof thebrainpower.

TheDoctorparticularly'emphasised thefactthatDrink,thegreatest curseofmoderttimes,isagreatinfluenceinunderminingthestability ofthemind.
