HehadservedunderNapoleoninthe Italiancampaign,aed'wasaparticipantinthebattlesofLodi,Arcola andRivoli,receivingseveralwounds inoneoftheseengagements.When, loneafterward,thesoldierreturned
toprivateliteandhadacquireda fortuneincommercialpursuits,a suddenre,,ersereducedthefamilyto financialdistress.Hearingofthis, Napoleon,whohadinthemeantime becomeEmperor,sentamessageto Dr.Ozanam,theofferofaposition inhisownguards,withtherankof captainfor"thebrilliantofficer whosevalorhadmadealivelyimpressiononhim.

Dr.Ozanam'swifewasthedaughterofamerchantofLyons,andwas awomanofremarkablesolidityof character.BothparentswereearnestandpracticalChristians,asFredericafterwardstestified."Inthe midstofanageofskepticism."he declared,"Godgavemethe-seeof beingborninthefaith.Asachild hesetmeonthekneesofaChristianfatherandaholymother."
Whenhisschooldaysendedhewas Placedasaclerkinauattorney's office,duringwhichprobationbecontinuedhisgeneralstudies....Inthe year183Thewasadmittedtoth School'oflawinParis,andwhilein attendancehadtheopportunityof meetinginsocialcircles'manyofthe celebritiesoftheFrenchcapital.On oneoftheseoccasionshewaspresentedtothefamousCateauhriand, whoaskedtheyoungmanwhether hehadyetbeentoanyofthetneatersinParis.
Fredericrepliedthathehadnot. "Anddoyouintendtogo?"addedthestatesman. Whenhewas toldbyOzanamthathehadpromisedhismothernottovisitatheatertheveteran'sfacelighteduswith satisfaction,andheembracesthe youngmanwarmly."Iimploreyou tohetruetothatpromisetoyio:ir mother,"headded. Inthelawschoolatwhichheattendedandinthecollegewherehe assistedatthelecturesanddebates thespiritofinfidelitywasrampant. Inthethrongofstudentsinthese institutionsthereweretobefound onlyafewwhopracticedtheirreligiousduties.Ozanamwasoneof these.Hewaswellinformedasto hisreligiousprinciplesandwasable toanswerandcontroverterroneous viewsandstatementsoftenputforwardinthedebates. Sothat,in fact,hebecamealeaderofthelittle CatholicPartyinthecollege.
Itwasinthecourseofoneof thesediscussionsintheLyceumthat atauntagainstreligionwasthrown outbyoneofthescoffers,which Ozanamquicklyresentedandanswered,butastheepisodeledtomemorableandunexpectedconsequences, Imaybejustifiedindetailingthein cidentmorefully.
Thedebaterhadsaidreferringto theCatholicChurch"Yes,your Churchhasundoubtedlyfilledagreat placeinhistory,butnowsheisonlyavenerablerelic,acrumblingedificecumberingtheearth. Wherein atthepresenttimedoesshemanifestanythingofherancientspirit andpower?WhatdoyouCatholics dotoshowyourfaithbyyour works?"
Thetauntwaskeenlypointedand struckhome."WhatdoyouCatholicsdotoshowyourfaithbyyour works?"Ozanamfelttheforceof thestingandreproach.
ItwasintheroomsofM.de Montalembertthattheideaofaunionorsocietyforgoodworksfirst took-shape.Afewyoungmenmet there,anditwasthenOzanamproPosedthattheyshould"dosomethingtoshowtheirfaithbytheir works."Lateratanothermeeting thissuggestionwasreducedtopracticeunderthewiseguidanceofM. Bailly,theveteran,theonly"elder" presenttheothers,asOzanamafterwardsdeclared,were''onlyeight Poorfellows."
Itistruehecouldhaveanswered, asdoubtlesshedid,thattheChurch hadlostnoneofherancient,Qirit orprimitivezealforthesalvationof souls.thatthewholeworldafforded abundantevidenceofthe,splendid andtheundiminishedapostolicspirit oftheoldfaiththattheChurch wasmultiplyingtestimoniesofreitHonandcharity.oneverysidemenwereblindtotheirinfluenceor refusedtoseethem.Therepoach, neverthelessdistressedhim.
Theyresolvedthattheirwork shouldbetoaidthepoor.How weretheytocarrythisintoeffect? TheysoughtthecounselofaSistair ofCharitywho,likeallthemembersofhercommunity,wasknown forherzealandsympathyforthe poorofParis.TheSistergave hemusefuladvice,andalistofpoor peopletovisit.Atthefirstmeetiagofthelittlebandthehatwas Passedaroundandacollectiontakenupforcharitablework.Itwas littletheseyoungstudentscouldgive butwiththeir"mites"theworkwas begun,anumberofpoorfamilies werevisitedandalmsandgoodadvicegiven,accordingtothenecessitiesforeachcase.Thuswascommencedby.these"eightpoorfellows" thecharitableapostolatethathas sinceunderthetitleofthe"SocietyofSt.VincentdePaul"became worldrenowned. TheSocietythusformedbyOzanamin1833derivesitsnamefrom thegreatapostleofcharityofthe seventeenthcentury,St.Vincentde Paul,thefameofwhosememorable devotiontothecauseofthepoor, theoutcastandtheafflictednever' diedoutoftheheartsofthepeople ofFrance.Therulesofthissociety arefew,simpleandstringent.There arenosalariesorpaidofficialsof anykind.Nopoliticalorpersonal discussionsareallowedandnodiscriminationastosectornationality ladispensingthecharityofthesociety.WithinafewyearstheconferencesinParisalonehadsomul-
tipliedthatwereenabledtoextend assistanceto20,000poorpersons! Andtabs,notinaspiritofolhcial condescension,butcabrotherlylove andeindness. ThisisnotOzanamaonlyclaimtoournonceand admiration. AkewaslargelyiustrumentalingainingforLaCOrtliilre de,:esstothepulpitof.Notrebailie, fromwhichtheeloquentpreacher electrifiedParisby,hismarveious conferencesinwhenhisloftyand impassionedutter...acesrevivedthe besttraditionsofBossuet,Bourdaibueandothermastersofecclesiasticaloeatory.
In1836elzanamwonhisdegreeof DoctorofLetters-hehadalreadyattainedtoaprofessorshipinthecollegeoflawsandhislecturesand literaryworkshadmadehimanauthorityattheSorbonne.Oneof hisfavouriteandmostelaboratestudieswas"DanteandthePhilosophy oftheThirteenthCentury,"which hasbeentranslatedintoEnglish. Hepossessedthegiftofsingulareloqtienceandhisdistoursesonliterary andhistoricsubjectsintheuniversity,wherehehadthechairofforeignliterature,invariably.attracted alargeanddelightedaudience.
Ozanamwas,likehisfather,a staunchrepublican;thatis,hebelievedinthepeopleandtheirright Vetorule-hencehewelcomedthedownfallofLouisPhilippein1848andthe substitutionoftherepublic.But mostofallinhisthoughtsandconcernwasthe"socialquestion,"as hedeclaredasearlyas1836."The questionwhichdisturbstheworld aroundusisneitheranindividual questionnoraquestionofpolitical forms,butasocialquestion.Itis thestraggleofthosewhohavenothingwiththosewhohavetoomuca itistheviolentshockofopulence analofpovertywhichmakesthe soiltrembleunderourtread."
Ozanamwasalwaysdeeplyinterested,inthewelfareoftheworking classes.Hevisitedthemintheir homes,aidedthemwhendistressed, lecturedintheircirclesandcouncils. sothathewonforhimselfthetitle oftheworkingman'sfriend."Itis notsurprisingthatOzanamshould havebeenapopularspeakerwiththe aerisansofPariseHemadehimself oneofthem,andhisaddresseshad thatnoteofpersonalsympathy whichcouldnotfailtowintheir respectandconfidence.
Ozanamallthistimewasclimbing withouteffortonhispart,theslipperypathtofame.Hewasalready renownedasoneofthemostbrilliantoftheuniversityprofessors-his lecturesdreweaeerandcultivated audiences.andhisliteraryproductionsobtamedEuropeancelebrity. Thebestknownofthisnumerous worksare"Civilizationofthefifth Century," "GermanicStudies," "DanteandthePhilosophyofthe ThirteenthCentury.""TheFranciscanPoets,""APilgrimagetothe LandoftheCid."Hewrotefor publicjournalsandreviews-inall ethereiperiodicalshepressedhisviews onthesocialquestionwhichthenoccupiedpublicattention.Itwasthe periodofthenewdemocracyin France,thebeginning,-Imaysayof thepoliticalupheaval-whichwas curbedforatimeundertheempire ofNapoleonIII.andwhichhassince soughtventinthespread,thealarmingspread,oftheSocialisticpropagandathroughouttherepublic. TheenthusiasticmemberoftheAus- tralianNativesAssociationtells anAustralianthatheshould joinhis,SocietyinPreference toitbecausehisisacosmopolitan andcamthereforedomuchtowards drivingtooblivionthemalgnity, whichoccasionallyappearsinmany ofourpeopleonaccountofdifference inreligiouspersuasion;andbecause itisanationalSociety,thatcanbe usedasamedium,throughwhichhe candosomethingtowardstheupbuildingofhiscountry,Australia. IftheA.N.A.wereaSocietywhich receivedintoitsrankseverylaw- abidingcitizen,whowouldcometo discussionsonPublicquestions,the cryanddemandforreformsmadeby itmightbebeneficialtothecountry.Butthereisnosuch8oclety, andthecryoftheA.N.A.isaparty cry-notAustraliancitizens'butnatives'cry.Thereforeitisonlyinclinedtoaddtoourpresentpoliti-calills,whichareparty'politics. Itmaybeatraininggroundwhereatmenarefittedforpubliclifeyet itcertainlyisnomoreofonethan anyothersocietyisorcanbe.

Suchbenefitsareonly gainedbyspecialcontributionsto specialfunds. TheHibernianSocietyisgivingmaterialbenefitsthat arewhencomparedwithcontributions,equaltothosegivenbyany other.
LeteveryCatholicjoinhisownand soonitshallbyfarbethebestfrom asocialandenjoyablestandpoint. WithmaterialbenefitsthereareadvantagesintheHibernianSociety ofahigherandnoblerkind.Asan Australiancombinationitiscapable andIbelieveitisdoingfarmore towardsthenpbnildingofAustralia thananyother.Asyetithasnot beenaschoolforpoliticiansbecausediscussionsonpublicquestions
atitsmeetingshavenotbeenallowedithasdoneanditisdoing more;forithasdoneandisdoing muchtowardspreservingthemoralityofthepeople,wOlichisalterall ofmostimportancetoanation.
IfourpeopledirecttheirattentionstotheFiscalIssue,Landreform,andallsubjectsofthiskind withthegreatestenergyandneglect thisonethingpreservationofmorality,ourcountrywillneverbecome anation.
ItisnotnecessarytotelltheCatholicofallthatcanbedonebyour Societyforthepreservationormorality,heknowsitinhisheart,even thoughhemayhavejoinedaforeign lodgeandifhehaswatchedthe Catholicyouthforthelastsixyears asIhave,hemusthaveseenthat themajorityofthosewhojoineda cosmopolitansocietyfallawayfrom theirreligion,whilethosewhoJoinedourownareinmostcasesstill Practicalmembersofthatfaith. Interested,-astheyaresuretobe,inthedoingsoftheCatholicChurch, theymanagetofindoutwhether collectingbookshavebeenissued, howthecollectorsareauthoris.ei, howtheirbooksaresignatured,and whatisthepleaonwhichcollectors presstheirclaimsformoneycontributionsfromtheunsuspectingpublic.Havingdiscoveredthesepreliminariestheytakecounselastonow they'maypersonateasauthorised collectorsforCatholiccharity.. Thievesareingeniousdevisers.Con-
sites-againstwhomwewarngenerousmindedpeopletobeontheir guard-knowitandtradeenit. Theycannotfindabettercardto playwiththantheCatholic'scollectingcard. Thereisinthisreflection.surely,a somethingtomaketheIrishheart glowgladonanoccasionsuchas
thatwhichistocomeonthe1-th. WhereverFreedomlivestheyhave madeahomeandineveryhrancnof industrytheyhavemadetheirway ,.towealthandinfluence.Strongin herunitywiththeSeeofRomeIrelandstandsto-day,afterthelapse of14centuries,astrikingcontrast tothoseotherlands,moredowered byfortune,whointheirluxuryhave notkeptthefaith.Thereisreason thenwhytheforthcomingNational feastdayoftheIrish,raceshouldbe madebythemadayofrejoicing throughouttheworld-arecordevent worthyoftheirbesttraditionsand afittingmemorialoftheirfaithand love. TheCanadianmovedquickly,toward hiscompanion.thefire,asheentered thecircleoflight,showingtheterrorthathadsuddenlycometohim; he,too,hadcaughttheaccent,and recognizedinthesoundthevoiceot thedeadfur-hunter.Norwerethe mentheonlyevidencesofthereality ofthissoundthedogshadhalfrisenfromtheirlairsinthesnow,and witherrserectandheadspointedto theriver,theyseemedtolookfor theapproachofsomeonefromthe outsidesolitude.
Thusinthefulllightofthefire, thetwotravellersstoodintheattitudeofmenwho,facetofacewith theevidenceoftheirsenses,feelthe creepingsofthatundefinablerear whichliesinthefaintestbreathingof thatvast,shadowyworldbeyondthe narrowcircleofourlittlelives.
Butwhateverbetheenemy,or whateverbethefearthatoppresses themindofman,itiseasiertogo andmeetitthantostandstillinstinctively,thetwomenmoved throughthetangledwreckoffallen forest,passingtheborderingoutworkofoverthrownpines.They minedtheedgeofthehighbank,and, lookedoutoverthegreatriver.The whitelineofthesnowstillshowed stillshowedthebroadexpanse,and revealedindimoutlinethehummocks andicehillsofthecentralchannel.
Butthemenhadlittlethoughtof iceorsnoworriverchannel-with anxiouseyestheypeeredintothe duskylight,andtriedtoscanthe sledthatheldthedead.

Startledbythevoicesontheshore thewolverinevanished.Sofarthe pagewaseasytoreadbutwhat abouttheweirdwordthathadcalled themtothebankintimetosave fromtheravagesofthiswildanimal thedeadbodywhichthedyingfurhunterhadsoearnestlyplayedmight restbesidehissou?Therewasno soundinthelifeofthewilderness, nosightinallthewiderangeof forest,lake,orriver,tocastlightor clewuponitsstrangesignificance.
