The"breakup"ofthestudentsof tbaLadies'College,VictoriaSquare, broughtalargeandrepresentative audienceonlastMonday,nighttothe school-roomattachedtotheCollege. Theeveningwasoneofthemostenjoyableofpleasantevenings,and therewasnotonepresentwhowas notproudofthesplendideducationalrecordoftheGood*starts,and gratefulfortheinvitationtobepresentatthegrandfinaleoftheCollegefor1908.Theroomwasbeautifullydecorated,theCollegecolours beingeverywhereinevidence,andthe stagewithitsprettilypaintedscenerywasathingofbeautythatwill notbereadilyforgottenbythose whoclaimtohavethesmallesttaste forthebeautiful.

ingontheresultsoftheHigherPublic,andAdelaideSeniorUniversity results,whichhadcometohandby wire,hesaidthatthatdaywasa reeordoneintheeducationalhistory, oftheLadies'College.Twostuddents-MissesHarringtonaidCrawfordpassedsplendidlyinthreesubjectsintheHigherPublic,andboth alsopassedinsixsubjectsinthe Senior.MisCrawfordwiththree honours,andMissHarrington,with onehonour,whileSt.Joseph's Schoolhadsimilarresultsinsenior. AllpatronsofthisCollegewere proud,andjustlyproudofthese grandresults.Hementionedalso thatduringthepastfewdaysthe Collegehadbeeninspectedbythe GovernmentInspectors,andsepleasedweretheywithwhattheyhad seen,thattheyforthwithadmitted theCollegeasafirstclassSeconditySchool,whichwasentitledto ceisestudentswhowonGovernment bursaries,andwhomightchoseto takeouttheireducationunderthe patronageoftheSistersofMercy. Thiswasadistincthonourforthe schollandwhilewishingit.acontinuanceofsuchsuccesshehopedthe pupilswouldheworthyofit,and evergiveevidenceofthesplendidintellectualaestheticandmoraltrainingtheyhadreceivedfromtheSistersofMercy.

TheHon. W.Kingsmill,M.L.C., spokemostappreciativelyoftheentertainmenthehadthepleasureof beingpresentat,andconsideredthat ahighhonourhadbeenconferred uponhimincallinguponhimtoaddresstheaudience. Hepaida markedtribute'totheSistersfor thesplendideducationtheywere givingthestudents.Addressingthe girlsheloudlypraisedthemfortheir cultureddemeanour,whichhehad everyopportunityofobserving,as theywerehisnextdoorneighbours. Hereeardedthemashislittlesisters,andhefeltveryhappyinhavingsuchasplendidbodyofwellbehaved,bright,happyandintelligentsisterslivingnextdoortohim. MAGNIFICENTJUVENILEDISPLAY.

TheannualentertainmentsubmitOAbythepupilsofthelocalConventSchoolonMondayeveninglast wasineverywayanundoubtedly pronouncedsuccess.Theprogramme whichwasvery1.-easth isrueof theheaviestofitsnature,thathas evercomeunderournotice.Those inchargeofthemanagementareto behighly,complimentedonthesplendidresultoftheireffortstokeep thebellcontinuouslyrolling,byallowingnodelaybetweenthevarious items.Theaudiencewereveryenthusiasticfromtheopeningtothe dale,andwerejustifiedinbeingin thatstate,forthosewhoweretakingthevariouspartsallottedto them,thoughbutchildrenandsome ofthemweedots,sustainedtheir variouspartsmagnificiently,infact, Owmembersofshowsthatvisit brilliantlythatagreatnumberof Colliecouldwellbetaughtalesson fromtheperformancesonMonday evening. Allaroundcongratulationsonitssuccesswerepassedto andfroafterthetermination,and proudmustbetheteachers,aswell asthechildren,whoseeffortsbrought aboutsuchwell-meritedsuccess. Suchnumberswere,atvarioustimes onthestageinprettyandbecoming costumesconsistentwiththevarious partstobesustained,that,thesight

fairlydazzledone'seyestobehold suchvisionsasappearedduringthe operetta(FairyGrotto)andcantata (GoldenHairandtheThreeBears).

Theappearanceoftheperformers, especiallywhengroupedorclustered togetderwasallthatcouldbedesired.TheorelingpieceoftheprogrammewasentrustedtotheMisses Hell(piano),ColemanandLarney (violins),whoseefficiencywasproved beyonddoubtandareworthyofthe highestpraisefortheirperformance.

"FairyGrotto,"theleadingparts beiagtakenbytheMissesM.andR. Reynardson,Stuchbury,Ghilottiand S.StoneandMastersF.Stone,A. Jones,andL.Larney,wasoneof thefeaturesoftheevening,and throughoutintenseinterestwasdisplayedbythelargeaudience.Ten fairiespolkaontothestage,bearing wandsandflowersandsingapretty songtotheQueen,andwithabackgroundofevergreens,amongwhich areanothertroupeofhalf-hidden fairies,averyanimatedandinterestingscenewasbeheld. MissM. Reynardson(Queen)sangsweetlyto hersubjectsaprettysong,whothen madeafloralofferingtoHerMajesty.MissMollyLarney,gavearecitationfromShakespeare'sworks, whichwasfollowedbytheMisses Game,Mahony,andN.Larney aprettydisplayofdancingwith skippingropes.Theboysthentorsi( chargeoftheproceedings,andfrom thestarttothefinishoftheirperformancehadthespectator,:inroars oflaughter,andwithoutbias,it musthesaidthattheboys,whenevertheyappearedweremostenthusiasticallyreceived-theywerefavourites..

"BreakingUp (acomedietta) waswellhandled,andtheboy'svariousspeeches,deliveredwhenopposingthegrantingofholidays(praferrinetoabsorballthelearningit waspossibletocramintothemselves inagiventime)wereofascientific andamusingnature,andevoked roarsofhearty We saythattheboysdidsplendidlyand spokeoutlikesomeofourtrueand independentcitizens.TheIrishJig wasneatlyperformedbytheMisses Henderson,Watt,Reeves,andR. Revnardson. Ahumorousrecitation"Baby,"wherein,MasterFred Stone,tellshowhismother,when shewentout,lefthimathometo mindthesleepingbaby,hutunfortunatelyforhubs,itawoke,andthe caretakerdecidedtomakeadarkie ofitwithbootgloss,"whichmight probablywearoffinfiveorsix years,"waswithoutdoubtthemost humorousitemontheprogramme. andtheflatteringovationawarded toFredwashonestlydeserved.The nextitemwasawaitedwithmuch interest,asbytheprogrammeit wassomewhatmysterious,beingput downasapleasantsurprisebythe bons. ISIodoubtitwaswhentwo ofthemappearedasprise-fighters andgaveasweetandshortexhibition.Tworoundsbythese.and thenfollowedawillinggobytwo midgets. Rev.FatherO'Donnellthanked thosepresentfortheirpatronage, andstatedthatthegettingupof thiskindofentertainmentwasalabouroflovefortheSisters. He thoughtthattheohildrenthemselves werecontentwiththeresult.oftheir efforts.Hethankedtheparentsfor theassistanceextendedtotheConventEiohoolthroughouttheyear, andstatedthatthercsnItswere morepleasingtotheSistersaseach succeedingyearrolledby.Hegave praisetotheboysattendingthe schoolwithwhomhewashighly pleased. AswasexpectedtheChildren's concert,inMidlandJunctionwas.a realtreat,judgingfromthecrowded house,theraptattentionwithwhich thevariousitemsontheprogramme werefollowedandtheroundsofapplausewhichgreetedtheeffortsof thechildrenweareforcedtosay, theconcertgivenbythechildren oftheConventschoolwasagreat andunqualifiedsuccess.Theprogramme,althoughalengthyoneconsistingofovertwentyitemswas appreciatedthroughout,andtheattentionandinterestofthevastaudienceneverflaggedduringasittingof threehours. Ofcoarse,thiswas owinginparttothefact,thatthe Parentswereproudoftheirlittle ones,andanxioustoseethemappearonthestagetothebestadvantagebut,independentofall thatthecriticismoftheaudience mustbeafavourableone,andthe generalopinionprevailingisthatthe entertainmentwasthebestofthe season.

MissRoss,whopresidedatthepiano,openedtheproceedings,witha masterlyrenditionof"LesGouttes D,eau,"(Ascher)whichwasreceivedwithapplause.MissRosshas receivedhermusicalandeducational trainingatthehandsofthesisters, MidlandJunction,andisatpresent teachingintheirschools,andinhen musicalproficiencyaswellasinotherdepartments,shecertainlyreflects thenighestcreditonthetraining shehasreceived.Theseconditem ontheprogrammewasawell-renderedchorus,"Erinthetear"which wasvery,muchappreoiated.Apianofortesolo"Faust"(G.Gounod) followed.Theperformer,MasterR. Jolleyrenderedthebeautifulselectionwithexcellentstyleandfinish, andcalledforththeencomiumsof theaudiencebythebeautyandperfectionofhistouch.Nextinorder came"TheTambougineDrill," thegirlsgoingthroughtheir exercisestoperfecttimeandwith admirablestyleandprecision. A vocalsolo,"Theblindgirltoher harp."wasgivenbyMissM.Brennan.Thesingerreorderedthepatheticlittlenumberwithsplendidexpression,whilsthervoicewasquite asurprisetothedelightedaudience. AHighlandFlingbyfourofthegirls waswellreceived,andwasfollowed bya"FanSongandDrill,"bythe (Infantgirls).Hereaveryamusing diversion,whichmighteasilyhave resultedinaseriousaccidenttook place. A vocalanddramaticentertainmentbythepupilsofthePresentationConventSchoolCottesloe,took, placeinWell'sHall,onWednesday, December16th,andmaybedescribedasajuvenileartistictriumph. Theyaskfornomore,andwill'be satisfiedwithnoless.Thereisnot, Ineedhardlysay,thefaintestidea uponthepartofCatholicsortheir representativesofaskingforanythingwhateverintheshapeoffavour,privilegeoradvantage.Itis equality,andsimplyequalitywhich theCatholicpeopleaskfor,and whichtheyare,Iamcertain,inthe opinionofeveryfair-mindedmaninsideandoutsidetheHouse,entitled tohave.ItmightsomeasasurprisetomanypeopleinEnglandto learnthattheCatholicsdonotenjoyequalitywithotherdenominations to-day.Thepopularbeliefisthat theEmancipationActof1829removedallthelawsofwhichCatholics hadreasontocomplain.Asamatteroffact,theveryActofso-called Emancipationin1829itselfcontains provisionsofthemostoffensiveand insnl+ingcharactertowardstheCatholicpeople.Thevariousstatutes whichitissoughtbythepresent Billtorepealwillbefoundsetforth intheBillwhenitisprintedbefore secondreading. Thismay,tosome_ extent,betrue,butitdoesnot,in anywaylessentheoffencewhichCatholicsfeelisdonetotheminthis matter.In1902anorgansationis thiscountryendeavouredtoputthe SectiansoftheActof/829into forceagainstcertainJesuitpriests inLondon.Summonseswereappliedforagainstthreepersonsofthe Order,butMr.Kennedythepolice Magistrate,indismissingtheapplication,observedthatallthosesectionswerepracticallyobsolete,and quotedthewordsofthelateSir JamesStepheninhis"Historyof theCriminalLaw,"whosaidthat THESEPROVISIONS,EVER SINCETHEYHAVEBEENPASSED,HAVEBEENTREATED ABSOLUTELYASADEAD LETTER."

Imaymention,however,oneor two.IntheCatholicReliefActof 1829thereareseveralsectionsofthe mostoffensivecharactertowardsCatholics,andtheseitisproposedto repeal Section26to38provide franklyforthesuppressionofthe ReligiousOrdersoftheCatholic Church.Priestsareforbidden,underheavy.penalties,toexerciseany rites-orceremoniesoftheirreligion; towearthehabitsoftheirOrders, anywhere,saveinCatholicplacesof worshiporprivatehouses.Furthermore,itisfranklystatedthatthe objectsoftheSectionsoftheAct of1829istomakeprovisionforthe gradualsuppression,andfinalprohibitionintheUnitedKingdom,of JesuitsandotherOrders.Section 28states "Whereas.Jesuitsand membersofotherReligiousOrders, CommunitiesandSocieties,ofthe ChurchofRome,houndbyMonastic andothervows,areresidentwithin theUnitedKingdom,anditisexpedienttomakeprovisionforthegradualsuppression,andfinalprohibitionofthesame,therein." Then followprovisions,whichremainin forcetillthisday,requiringmembers ofReligiousOrderstonotifytothe ClerkofthePeaceoftheCounty

NOTTOREGARDTHISASIN ANYSENSEAPARTYMATTER

Iamcertainthatthereisnobody ofanyimportancewhocanpossibly objecttograntiagtotheCatholic peoplethefullestequalityinthemattersofreligion.Itisinsulting that,whileallthereligionsinthe Empirearetreatedwithfairness,the Catholicreligionaloneshouldbe singledoutforhumiliationandinsult.Ispeakastherepresentative of

Applicationwasthenmadetothe King'sBenchforamandamusto compelMr.Kennedytoissuethe summonses.TheapplicationwasrefusedbytheCourt,consistingofthe LordChiefJustice,andJustices DarlingandChannell.Mr.Justice Darling,inhisjudgment,saidthat whatevermighthavebeenthereas-LordChancellorofIrelandwasreonsforpassingtheseStatutes,movedandatthattimeanendeavwhichpersecutedopinionsandnotourwasmadebyaformermember

acts,theywere,tohismind,against thespiritandthegeniusoftheage. Forexample,herewasaStatute whichsaidthatJesuitscouldnotresideinthiscountry,thattheJesuit shouldbepunished,andyet,atthe sametimeaCatholicschoolmight earnagrantofpublicmoney,and, sofarasheknew,theJesuitmight teachintheCatholicschoolandhelp toearnthegrant. Thereisno doubtthattheselawshavebeen,as SirJamesStephensaid,adeadletter,althoughrecenteventsinLondon,wouldseemtoprovethat THESEENACTMENTSAREUSED BYWAYOFTHREAT.

LordMansfieldreferringtothese provisionsoftheActof1829,said theyweremoreproperlyspeaking, neverdesignedtobeenforcedatall butweremadeinterrorem.Itis areasonable'thingtosayandclaim thattheCatholicsobjecttolaws beingheldinterroremovertheir heads.If,indeed,thesehighlyoffensiveenactmentsaredeadletters, thatissurelyanadditionalreason whytheyshouldnolongerbeallowedupontheStatuteBook(cheers. Atanyrateitisamockeryto speakofreligiousfreedomaslongas lawsremaininreferencetotheCatholicChurchwhichdonotapplyto anyotherreligionintheBritishEmpireorintheworldandItake leavetosaythatuntiltheseoffensivelawsareremovedtherewillbe alwaysasenseofirritationandinjusticefeltby,themillionsthroughouttheBritishEmpirewhoprofess theCatholicreligionwhichafterall is THEMOSTANCIENTCHRISTIAN CHURCHINTHRWORLD.

fortheCountyofClare,SirColmanO'Loughlen,toremovethedisqualificationalsoinreferencetothe Englishoffice.Itwasarguedthen, however,andindeeditwasarguedin thedebateonMr.Gladstone's'Bill, thatnorealprohibitionagainstCatholicsoccupyingeithertheposition ofLordLieutenantofIreland,oret LordChancellorofEnglandreally exists. Bethatasitmay,Mr. Gladstonethoughtitnecessaryto placethequestionbeyonddoubt,and whatMr.GladstoneproposedIseek tocarryoutinthisBill.Ialso proposeinthisBilltodoawaywith

OFFENSIVEPARTOFTHEACCESSIONDECLARATION. whichtheSovereignofthiscountryisrequiredtotake.Thereisnobody,Iamsure.whocanapproveof theCatholicChurchbeingsingled outofallthereligionsintheworld fordenunciationintheAccession Oath.ThelateGovernmentrecognisedthatthereferencestoCatholics,madebytheKingonascending thethrone,wereoffensive,andan effortwasmadeintheHouseof Lordstore-modeltheoath. That effort,however,cametonothing,and thedeclarationstillremainsoutrageously offensive to the (sentimentsofmillionsofCatholics throughouttheEmpire.Ipropose inthisBilltoleaveoutoftheOath theoffensi"ereferencetoTransubstantiation,andthewords,"That theinvocationoradorationofth VirginMaryoranyothersaint,and thesacrificeoftheMass,astheyare nowusedintheChurchofRome aresuperstitiousandidolatrous.Thiestatement,itwillreadilyhead mittedbyeveryfair-mindedman,'is crosslyoffensive(hearhear),and moreover,itis,aseveryCatholic

ONEOFTHEMOSTCATHOLIC CONSTITUTENCIESINTHE WORLD.

(hear,hear)-thesameconstituency whichformerlyelectedO'Connelland helpedtobringaboutEmancipation. Speakingforthatconstituency-and, IbelievefortheCatholicpeoplead thewholeEmpire-Imay.saythat Catholicshavenogreaterambition thantoliveontermsoffriendship andgoodwillwiththeirfellow-citazeesofalldenominations(cheers). TheCatholicsonlyaskforequality. Itistheirright,andwithnothing

elsewilltheybesatisfied(cheers). Itisoneofthemostcherishedand proudmemoriesofIrishmenthatthe workofCatholicEmancipationwas noblycommencedandlargelycarried forwardintheProtestantParliament ofHenryGrattaninDublin,longbeforethisHouseeverattemptedto strikeanyofthechainsfromthe CatholicpeopleofEngland.Inthe pasttherehasbeenfartoomuchillfeelingandtroubledirectlycaused byattemptstointerferewithreligiousfreedom.Agooddealhasbeen done,nodoubt,toemancipatethe Catholics,butaslongastheselaws andrestrictions,ofwhichwecomplain,continue,theworkofEmancipationcannotbesaidtobeanything likecomplete,andIappealwiththe utmostconfidencetomembersofall Partiesandofallreligionsinthis House.topromote,bypassingthis Bill,thatfeelingofgoodwillbetween differentsectionsofthepopulation, whichcanneverreallyexistaslong asthepeopleofonereligionare sineledoutforunequalandunjust treatment(cheers).
