lysome500subicriberal-Larelyone subscriberfromeachparochialdistrictinAustralasiaI Noonewhoisatallconversant withthespiritualatmospherein whichweliveandmovewillventuretoaffirmthatanappealforsupportandagenerousresponsewere notdemanded.Ofcourse,thereneverhasbeenatimewhensceptism andinfidelitywerenotfeltandexpressed.Andtherehavebeenperiods,too,inthehistoryofmore thanonenationwhenthewholetone ofwhatiscalledtheintellectuallife Particularlyasthattonefoundits expressioninthenationalliterature, wassetagainstChristianity.But theseweredayswhentheintellectuallifeandliteraturewereonlyfor thefew,andthemassesofthepeaple,forthemostpartunaffectedby suchinfluences,continuedtobelieve andworshipprettymuchasbefore. Itisfarotherwiseinthesedays ofours.ThespiritofintellectualOCTOBERismisabroad.Allmenread,and, whether'they!wishitornot,the genialitatallevents,areinfluencedbywhattheyread.Itwouldbe scarcelytruetosaythattheliteraturecirculatedamongstus,takenas awhole,isirreligiousorimmoral, buttherecanbenodoubtthata considerableportionis,andthatportionofwhichthiscanhesaidiswidelycirculatedanddoinggraveand inmanycasesirreparablemischief tomenandwomenofeveryclass atthepresentmoment.

InpresentingthereportoftheExecutiveCommitteeforthepastyear wearegladtobeabletoannoance thattheA.C.T.S.isshowingincreasingsignsofvitality.Ifonlyits ratioofprogressduringthefew yearsofitsexistencebemaintained,itwillundoubtedly,inthenear future,becomeapotentfactorin throwingthe"searchlightsofCatholicTruthalongthedarkwaysand subtlewindingsoferror."Still, thepresentisthedayofcompareAgain,thegrowthofRationalistivelysmallthings,andmuchgen-ticandSocialisticliteratureisundoubtedlyoneofthegravestand croneaidandvigorousworkare necessarytobringtofruitionthemostdisquietingfeaturesofour times.Publicationswhichassailreligionineveryshape,andadvocate inoneformoranotherasocialrevolution,entailingconsequenceswhich nomanofsober'judgmentcancontemplatewithoutdismay,arepouted totalisnowincreasedto502,000.continuallyfromthePressandread Ofthisnumber,95,782pamphletsbyreceptive,buthalfeducated, havebeendistributedduringtheminds.Undoubtedlythisleavenis Pasttwelvemonths,whilstlastyear only62,000wentintocirculation.

OfthevariouseditionsoftheSociety'sadmirablePrayerBook,33,437'copieshavebeensold,andof thistotal6,952copieshavegone intocirculationduringthepresent year.

InourlastReportwerecorded thefactthatourSocietyhadpublished382,000pamphletsduringthe DEATHOFA'67MAN. threeyearsofitsexistenee.That Anotheroftheveteransofthe'67 movementhasjustpassedawayin thepersonofMr.PatrickTierof St.Mary'sroad,Dublin.Mr.Tier wasactivelyconnectedwiththeFenianMovement,andwas,atalater date,aprominentfigureintheAmnestyAssociations.Atthetimeof the"split"hewasasupporterof Mr.Parnell,andhewastheTreasureroftheJamesStephen'sMemorialCommittee.

"When shalltheirgloryfade?."criedTennyson.PatrickRyan'sgloryfaded whenhewasdischargedfromthe army.Hefadedoutofmortalexistence-hewentinto"thejawsof death"atlast,anddidnotreturn. Plainlyhedraggedhiswearyold limbsoverthewallsofabrickyard atBirtley,Co.Durham,England. OnSeptemberT2hediedofstarvation.Thiswasalmost54yearsafterthe"ChargeoftheLightBrigade."Butsimilarinstancesoccur monthaftermonth.-inIrelandthe *sontheyteachistakentoheart.

Thefinancialstatementforthe yearendingNovember30th,1907, showedacredithblanceof£213s. 2d.Wehavealwayshadthequestionofourliabilitiesbeforeour eyes,andwehavealwaysmetour engagementswithsatisfactoryprompness,whilstthefactthatw1e can showthisyearacreditbalanceof £25Tie.Tod.isampleproofthat theSocietyhaspractisedrigideconomyincarryingouttheworkspecifiedinthisReport.

Itcannot,however,hetoostronglyimpressedontheclergyandlaitythatiftheSocietyistolive, andstillmore,ifitistoflourish andtoeffectthegoodofwhichwe believeittobecapable,itshould receivemoresupport. Itgoes withoutsayingthattheSocietydoesnotreceivetheassistanceto whichitisentitledbytherecognisedimportanceofitswork.There Isurgentneedforalargeincrease inthenumberofLifeandAnnuael Subscribers. Itmustbeadmitted thatthezealofCatholicsinthe disseminationofCatholicTruthfalls farshortofthatmanifestedbythe RationalisticPress-thesappersand minersofmoderninfidelity-andcertainnon-Catholicreligiousassociations.

Sometimeagothefollowingitem ofnewsappearedinthePress:-"A ladyresidinginLondon,whodesires tobeknownmerelyasM.K.H.'has transferredthesumofE10,000Indiathreepercent.stockasagiftto thegeneralpurposesoftheBritish andForeignBibleSociety."And tire.CatholicTruthSocietyofAustralia,whoseobjectitistoestablishandforwardaCatholicliteratureinthiscountry,canmustero.,

WhilsttheenemiesoftheChristiannamearewieldingwithsuch skilltheweaponofthePress,preparingruinforfaithandmorals, shallthatsamepotentweaponre mainuselessinourhands?Thecase isinthehandsofourCatholicpeople.Ifeachbringshometohimself thatourSocietyIsraisingaloft thewhitebannerofpurityandinnocenceinliterature,thatitisusingthePressasaninstrumentfor God,andthatthepracticalco-operationofallisneededthatourwork maytakeonwiderproportionsand spreadtohithertountilledfields, thentheunitedefforts,notofhundreds.hutofthousands,throughout theCommonwealthendNewZeelandwillmaketheworkofyour Committeefruitfulahundredfoldto thegoodofreligionandtheglory ofGod.

Nodoubtthisvexedquestionwill besettledonedayonthebroadlines ofjustice,patriotismandmorality, becausethehistoryoftheworld showsthatnoenterprise,whichthe Churchhasheldtobeessentialto thewelfareofSocietyandtheprogressofcivilisationhaseveryetdisappearedfromthefaceoftheearth, butallofthemareto-dayinvigorousoperation,andmostofthem,asweshallshowinasubsequentarticle-supportedbythewholepower oftheState.

TheCatholiccommunityofHighgatehascertainlydoneagreatdeal towardsadvancingtheinterestsof theChurchinthatlocality,andby eheexpenditureoftime,energy,and money,theworkershaveshowntheir earnestnessandinterestinthevariousundertakings.Withaviewof raisingfundsinaidoftheSacred HeartChurchandConvent,abazaar waslasteveningopenedintheParishhall,inHarold-street.Thehall wastastefullydecorated,andeacn oneofthehalf-dozenstallswhich wereplacedinthehallwasadorned andfestoonedwithflowersandevergreensinanovelthoughneatand charmingstyle.

TheMayorofPerth(Mr.T.G.A. Weareoftentdldbypublicmen fromtheplatfOrmandthepulpit, andwereaditasofteninthesecufarpress,andintheInsidiousenagazine,thatoneofthegreatcausesof chronicoppositiontotheCatholic Churchisthatwhichiscentredin theassertionthattheworldhas outgrownitsfaith.Itistooacdent,ithasthemustofagesonit, andCatholicsshouldthereforemodifytheirbelieftosuit,whattheircriticswouldcall,thespiritofthe age. Inotherwordstheyshould adopttheliberalspiritwhichprivate judgmentonthingsdivinecreates andcherishestheyshouldreview therevealedwordofGodandinterpretitaccordingtotheirlimitedand falliblejudgment.Thesethingsand worsethanthesearesaidagainst ourfaith,andtheevilofthemis thatthemotives,ofthespeakersand writersarediplomaticallyconcealed.whiletheirassaultsaredisguised,undertheattractivenameof Liberalism.

InsomesenseweCatholics'ambitionthedesignationofliberal. If wearegoodCatholicswemustbe liberalinthebroadestsignificance. whichcanheattachedtotheword. Hewhoisliberalwithwhatbelongs tohim,whenhehasafullandperfectrighttodowhathewisheswith

TheCatholicChurchisalsocriticisedbecauseshe(foolishly,asthey !say)maintainsunderexceptional 'difficulties,yetwithinexhaustible forbearanceandunswervingdeterminationherrighttoprepareyouth fortheresponsibilitiesofcitizenship. Herenemiescallherattitudelibeler ante,andhereffortsfolly.Still, shepersistsinit.Shelooksfartherthanthepresent.Sheseesthat thetrainingwhichtheStateguaranteesdoesnotembracethetraining ofthenoblerpartofman-hiswill. Stateeducationdoesnotembrace moralinstruction,anditsdisastrous attemptstome'educationnon-sectarianhaveresultedinmaking'itpurelymaterial.OurChurchbelieves thatanysystemofeducationwhich excludesdefinitemoraltrainingis incomplete,-inadequate,tothepreservationofmoralityandtherefore tothesecurityoftheState;consequentlyfollowingthelessontaught byhistory,sheundertakestoprovide atleastforherownchildren,and fromherownresources,thosesafeguardsofsociety,whichtheState hasneglectedorrefusestoprovide. Theissue,thereforebetweenCatholicsandpurelymaterialeducationis forusencouraging.Catholicsare doingtheirdutytowardsthemoral educationoftheirchildren.Protestantstransfertheirobligationtoan impossiblebodycalledtheStateor theStateEducationDepartment.No Protestantteacher,withasparkof manhoodinhim,whoenjoystheprivilegeorotherwiseofprivatejudgmentcouldseriouslyorconscientiouslyteachchildrenlessonsderlered fromtheBiblebymenwithperhaps onlyapercentageofhisownability,andconsequentlyasamatterof facttheycannotconcealalaugh attheridiculouspositioninwhich thesillysystemplacesthem.They donotbelievewhattheyteach,and howcanthey'inculcatelessonsin faithormoralswhichtheydonot believethemselves?Letteachersbe

Thattheupholdersofnon-Christiancreedsshouldbelieveinthepowerofthestronghandandtheefficacyoftheswordisnatural.Itis notsurprisingthatthepaganRomanrulerswhothoughttheChristianswereplottingtheirdownfallostracisedthemandcraellyexposed themtowildanimalsinthearena northatthesupportersoftheCrescentshouldhavehopedtovanquish foreverbyphysicalforcethe lowersoftheCross.Theyhadnss thehigherlawthatChristlaiddown tocurbtheferociousinclination whichpromptsmantocrushanenemyinthemostruthlessway.The ChristianGospelputsarestraintuponthisimpulse.Itisareligionof love,whichdoesnotcountenance violence. TheRightRev.Dr.Tierney,BishopofHartford,Connecticut,whose deathwerecentlyrecorded,wasa strongsupporteroftheCatholic press.Thepregnantsayingofthe latePopeLeoXIIIthat"ACatholicnewspaperisacontinuousmissioninaparish"hewaswontto repeat,andhetookpracticalsteps togiveeffecttohisconvictionas totheimportanceoftheCatholic newspaper.HedirectedtheCatholicpastorstoseethatthe"CatholicTranscript,"publishedatHartford,wentintoeveryhomeinthe diocese.Thecirculationthejournal thusgainedwasalltothegoodof religion.Catholicswereroused fromapathyandindifference.WhenevertheBishopsoughttheaidof hispeopleforanyprojectorundertakingitwasgivenwithalacrity, andDr.Tierney'spopularityex tendedbeyondhisownflock,for amongstthereadersofthe"CatholicTranscript"aremanyProtestants.Viegrowthandflourishing conditionofthedioceseareproofs ofthedeceasedBishop'swisdom.He foundinitninety-eightparishesand heleftonehundredandsixty-six.
