Mr.Birrellinthatspeechal-soreferredtosomeofthedifficultiesof hispositioninIreland,andhehad hisGrace'smostcordialeymikathe. Tohismindthemostlamentable thingaboutMr.Birrell'spositionwas thatitwasthepositiOnofastatesmanwhohadtoregardthereally successfuldischargeofthedutiesof hisofficeassimplyimpossible.On theotherhand,aswasgenerallyunderstood,theChiefSecretarywas convincedthattheonlywayinwhich thecountrycouldbesuccessfully governedundertheEnglishCrown Wasbyitsbeingallowedtogovern itself,somewhatlikeCanadaorAustralia,orNewZealand.(Loudapplause.)Ontheotherhand,Mr.Birrellhadtobear,whilemethave seemedtohimthealmostintolerable burdenofendeavouringtoadminister theaffairsofthecountryasbesthe couleewiththemachineryathisdisposal,andtrytokeepthingspeaceableandorderlyasfarasmightbe withinthelimitsofthelaw.andall thisunderasystemwhichperhaps mightbestbedescribedasGovernmentnotsomuchbytheBritishPar !lamentasbytheHouseofLords. D.byacquaintancesandfriendswho hadseensomeoftheTernariesmade byDr.MahatlyandtwootherproteasersintheUniversitytothiseffectthat"theIrishlanguagecontainednoliteratureexceptsuchaswas eitherreligiousorelse,sillyorelse indecent."Myprofessionaldutiesso fullyoccupiedallmytime,thatI wasunabletoreplytotheseinquiries,butnowthatatimeofresthas coteicandenotesametimetoa letterintheW.A.Record and therebyreply,toallthequeriesI havereceived.
