Andletitbeclearlyunderstoodaboveallthingsthatthescholastic philosophyWeprescribeisthatwhich theAngelicDoctorhasbequeathedto us.andWe,therefore,declarethatall theordinancesofOurPredecessoron thissubjectcontinuefullyinforce, and,asfarasmaybenecessary.We dodecreeanew,andconfirm,andordainthattheyhebyallstrictlyobserved.Inseminarieswheretheymay havebeenneelartedlettheBishops Imposethemandrequiretheirobservance,andletthisapplyalsotothe Superiorsofreligiousinstitutions. Withregardtoprofanestudies,sufficeittorecallherewhatOurPredecessorhasadmirablysaidApply yourselvesenergeticallytothestudy ofnaturalsciencesthebrilliantdiscoveriesandtheboldandusefulapplicatiOnsofthemmadeInourtimes whichhavewonsuchapplausebuour contemporarieswillbeanobjectof perpetualpraiseforthosethatcome afterus(LeoXIII.Alloc.,March7, 1880).Butthisdowithoutinterferingwithsacredstudies,asOurPredecessorinthesemostgravewords prescribedIfyoucarefullysearch forthecauseofthoseerrorsyouwill findthatitliesinthefactthatin thesedayswhenthenaturalsciences absorbsomuchstudy,themore severeandloftystudieshavebeen proportionatelyneglected-someof themhavealmostpassedintooblivion.someofthemarepursuedina hilt-heartedorsuperficialway,and, sadtosay,nowthattheyarefallen fromtheiroldestate,theyhavebeen disfiguredbypreversedoctrinesand monstrouserrors(lococity.Weordain,therefore,thatthestudyof naturalscienceintheseminarieshe carriedonunderthislaw.
2.-PRACTICALAPPLICATION.
2Alltheseprescriptionsandthose ofOurPredecessoraretobeLorne inmindwheneverthereisquestionof choosingdirectorsandprofessorsfor seminariesandCatholicUniversities.
Anybodywhoinanywayisfoundto beimbuedwithModernismistobe excludedwithoutcompunctionfrom Theseoffices,andthosewhoalready occupythemaretobewithdrawn.. ThesamepolicyistobeadoptedtowardsthosewhofavourModernism either'byextollingtheModernistsor excusingtheirculpableconduct,by criticisingscholasticism,theHolyFather.orbyrefusingCiediencetoecclesiasticalauthorityinanyofitsdepositariesandtowardsthosewho showaloveofnoveltyinhistory. archaeology,biblicalexegesis,and finallytowardsthosewhoneglectthe sacredsciencesorappeartopreferto themtheprofane.Inallthisquestionofstudies,VenerableBrethren, Youcannothetoowatchfulortoo constant.;hutmostofallinthe choiceofprofessors,fprasarulethe studentsaremodelledafterthePatternoftheirmasters.Stronginthe consciousnessofyourduty,actalwaysprudentlybutvigorously. Fsilltaldiligenceandseverityareto beusedinexaminineandselecting candidatesforHolyOrders,Far,far fromtheclergybetheloveofnovelty! Godhatestheproudandthe obstinate.Forthefuturethedoctorateoftheologyandcanonlawmust neverbeconferredonanybodywho hasnotmadetheregularcourseof scholasticphilosophy; ifconferredit shellheheldasnullandvoid.The ruleslaiddownin1896bytheSacreelCongregationofBishopsandRegularsfortheclerics,bothsecularand regelar,ofItalyconcerningthefrequentingoftheuniversities,Wenow decreetobeextendedtoallnations.

Togiveyousomemoregeneraldirections,VenerableBrethren,ina matterofsuchmoment,Webidyou doeverythinginyourpowerto.drive outofyourdioceses,evenbysolemn interdict,anyperniciousbooksthat maybeincirculationthere.The HolySeeneglectsnomewlstoput downwritingsofthiskind,butthe numberofthemhasnowerownto suchanextentthat,itisimpossible 'tocensurethemall.'Henceithappensthatthemedicinesometimesarrivestoolate.forthediseasehas takenrootduringthedelay.Wewill, therefore.thattheBishops,putting asideallfearandtheprudenceofthe flesh,despisingtheoutcriesofthe wicked,gentlylayallmeans,butconstantly,doeachhisownshareof thiswork,rememberingtheinjunctionsofT.eoXIII,intheApostolic ConstitutionOfficiorumLettheOrdinaries.actinginthisalsoasDelegatesoftheApostolicSee,exert themselvestoprescribeandputout ofreachofthefaithfulinjurious hooksorotherwritingsprintedor circulatedintheirdioceses.Inthis passagetheBishops,itistrue,receivearight,tuttheyhavealsoa dutyimposedonthem.LetnoBishopthinkthathefulfilsthisdutyby denouncingtousoneortwobooks, whileagreatmanyothersofthe samekindaretnine,publishedand circulated.Norareyoutobedeterredbythefactthatabookhas obtainedtheTMprimaturelsewhere, bothbecausethismaybemerelysimulated,andbecauseitmayhavebeen ereetedthroughcarelessnessoreasinessorexcessiveconfidenceinthe roithor,asmaysometimeshappenin religionsOrders.Besides,justasthe samefooddoesnotagreee!uallvwith everybody,itmayhappenthata bookharmlessInonemay,onac-
