Mr.Birrell,inreply.saidthetime hadcomewhenallpublicbodiesand allright-thinkingEnglishmenandwomenmustdoallintheirpowerto combatConsumption,and,ifpossible, intimetodestroyit.Howwasthat tobedone?LeavingtAiequestionof moneyoutofconsiderationforamoment,justatthepresent,timethe exertionsoftheCountyCouncilsGeneralCouncilandtheactionofthe doctorsinIrelandandotherpartsof theworldhadcalledpublicattention toit,anditwouldnotbewiseto assumetheyhadsufficientlyeducated publicfeelinginthiscountryuponthe subjecttonailwithitinqiuiteas strongamanneraspeopleproposed.

Continuing,M.r,Birrellpaiditwas contemplatedtomakeprovisionfor lossasfollows:-Whiteallhey(BelCorkCounty,72;DublinCounty,70 CorkCounty,72;DublinCounty,75.

Theproblemwashowbesttoputup acheapbutasufficientformofsanatoriathroughoutIrelandforthepurposesofdealingwiththediseasein itsearliersteges.TherewereinIrelandaconsiderablenumberofworkhousesoccupyinghealthyandisolated sites,whichwouldhesuitable,notof courseasbuildings,butassites.He proposedtosuggest,thattheLocal GovernmentBoardshouldfindout howmanyworkhousestherewerein Irelandnolongerneededforthepurposesofworkhouses,whichmightbe uscelasthesitesforsanatoria.They hadalsotoprovidehospitalaccommodationforthosewhowerecono pleten.itsvictims.Withregardto Oldigationsuponmedicalpractitioners ablethatthereshouldbestatutory oblivationsuponmedicalpractitioners ofnotifyingtheexistenceofpulmonryeemsumption.The(ducational processshouldIssetironerastohow peoplesufferingfromthisdeadlycomplaintshouldbetreated. AlthoughNewNorciahad'been foundedin1846,andhadbeencarriedoncontinuouslyundergreattrials anddifficulties,itwasnotuntil1853 whenthisbodyofyoung,vigorous andself-sacrificingmissionariesarrived,thatthemissionmadeanymarkedprogress. Thisbodyofmissionarypioneers landedinFremantleonthemorning ofthelathofAugust,thefeast-day oftheAssumptionofourBlessed

BishopSali'adowasinLondon makingallnecessaryarrangements, andfromtherehesentnoticetothe membersofthemissionarycontingent tomeetinCadiz,aportonthe south-westcoastofSpain,andthen proceedtojoinhintinLondon,for theshipwouldsailinafewdays.

Allthepartyof37dulymetatCadiz andalsometthefirstdisappointment.Themarineauthoritieswould notallowtheirship,the"JohnPanther,"tosailuntilshehadunder-

ers,"tellingthematthesametimethevisionshehadbeforeher. Natunallythiswastalkedaboutamongstallthenuns,andsoonbecameknownInmanypartsofSpain, evenbeforethemissionariesbad. reachedAustralia.Anaccountofthe samewaswrittentoFatherGarrido beforeanyletterofhiscouldreach home,andhewasnotalittlesurprisedtofindsuchastrikingsimilaritybetweenthewrittenreport'and thereality,bothastothedateand themanneroftheirsufferingson board. Therestof'theirvoyagetoFremantle,withtheexceptionofone stormyday,wasallthatcouldbe desired....Notwithstandingalltheir trials,asconsideredinthosedays, theydidtheirjourneyinquicktime, andthey-landedonAustraliansoil forthecelebrationoftheglorious festivaloftheAssumption.

Allthepriestsofthispartyhave longsincepassedawayandmostof thebrothers.SohasBishopSalviedo. theirgreatleader,theintrepidpioneer."Theynowrestfromtheirlahours."Thereare,however,seven survivorsyetlivinginNewNoroiaFatherMartinez,50yearsparishpriestofNewNorcia(hewasordainedpriestafterlandinginAustralia)andsixBrothers-mostof themwelladvanced.oversoyearsof age.
