'Phereturnofthe-RightRev.AbbotTorresfromEuropewithaparty ofnuns,priestsandstudents,inthe month.ofAugust,1907,callsupeiome interestingreininseencesoftheAugustof54yearsago,whenBishop SalvadolandedatFremantlewith fourpriestsandthirty-threelay-brothersforthechristianisingofthe Australianaborigines,andAblbot Torresisjustabcrittobeginanew missionofasimilarkind'intheunexploredregionsofournorth-western coast. AlthoughNewNorciahad'been foundedin1846,andhadbeencarriedoncontinuouslyundergreattrials anddifficulties,itwasnotuntil1853 whenthisbodyofyoung,vigorous andself-sacrificingmissionariesarrived,thatthemissionmadeanymarkedprogress. Thisbodyofmissionarypioneers landedinFremantleonthemorning ofthelathofAugust,thefeast-day oftheAssumptionofourBlessed
Thetimidnun,inastateofnervousness,borderingoncollapse,deliveredthemessagefaiithlully,asishe hadreceivedit.ThenFatherGarrido wholistenedwithattention,asked her "DidtheBlessedVirginsaywh''herweshouldbealllestontheuoy?"Thepalesisteranswered "The'BlessedVirginsaysyoushall notliedrownedyoushalllandsafely,hutonlyaftergreatafflictionand sorrow.""Oh,then"answered FatherGarrido,"Idon'tmindwhat wehavetosurferorendureprovided wegettoourmissionalive."
BishopSali'adowasinLondon makingallnecessaryarrangements, andfromtherehesentnoticetothe membersofthemissionarycontingent tomeetinCadiz,aportonthe south-westcoastofSpain,andthen proceedtojoinhintinLondon,for theshipwouldsailinafewdays.
Allthepartyof37dulymetatCadiz andalsometthefirstdisappointment.Themarineauthoritieswould notallowtheirship,the"JohnPanther,"tosailuntilshehadunder-
ers,"tellingthematthesametimethevisionshehadbeforeher.
