Mr.J.O'DoueghuewritesasfollowsintheDublin"Iddependent: Theprogressofthemovementfor revivingtheuseoftheIrishlanguage iswellexemplifiedintheproceedings attheOireachtasrecentlyheldinthe Rotunda,Dublin.Itmayserveausefulpurposetotoharkbacktothe positionofthelanguageacoupleof centuriesagoandincidentallytonote theattitudetowardsitusuallyattributedtoSwift.In1703theLower HouseofConvocationpassedaresolutioncallingfortheappointmentof anIrish-speakingclergymaninevery parishinIreland.Itwasalmostuniversallyspoken,andthoughtheoblectofthe,StateChurchwasproselytism,theresolutionisconclusiveevidencethatthelanguagewasunderstoodeverywhere.Dr.King,theProtestantArchbishopofDublin,oneof thefewchurchmenforwhomSwift hadrealrespect,wasstronglyinfavor ofencouragingthelanguage,andeven TrinityCollegewasnothostile.

In1738Dr.SamuelMadden,inhis "ReflectionsandResolutionsforthe GentlemenofIreland,"computedthat inIrelandonlyonepersonintwenty wasacquaintedwiththeEnglishlanguage,buthisestimateisevidently wrong.WalterHarris,inhis"DescriptionoftheCountyDown,"1744, saysthattheIrishlanguageinthat countywasconfinedtothepoorCath olics,bywhichhe,presumably,meant thattheyweretheonlypeoplewho madeittheirexclusivespeech.how farcorrectthismaybeitisdifficult tosay,butaslateas1812Itwas foundthatIrishwasgenerallyspoken throughoutConnaughtandMunster, thatinUlsteritwasmostprevalent InTyrone,Domeal,Cavan,andMonaghan,andinLeinsteritwasextensivelyspokenenMeathandWestmeath,Louth,WexfordandKilkenny. TheArchbishopofWestminstertook forhissubject"TheMaintenanceof ReligionintheSchool."Inthe courseofanimpressiveaddress,he said:-Itistime,Ithink,toleave foramomenttheengrossing,hutstill comparativelypettydetailswhichare absorbingourthoughtsinthegreat struggleforeducationalfreedomin England.Thesedetailscompelour attention,butiftheyaredweltupon exclusivelytheyobscuretheultimate issue,andmayleadustoforgetthat infightingfortheexistenceofour Catholicschoolswearealsoandnecessarilywithstandingthoseagencies which,unconsciouslyorwilfully,are workingforthedestructionofallreligioninthecountry.ForifthetaskmastersthatgovernourpresentParliamentaryrulershavetheirway,the religionofthenationwillreceivea blowfromwhichitcan,humanly speaking,neverrecover.Butweare nowfacetofacewithasystem,which initsownnature,issingularly ARROGANT,Acamnssivr.,AND UNJUST.
schools,lestthereligiousinfluences inthenation,alreadysomuchweakened,prove,powerlesstostemthetorrentsofevilswhichassailus.Pleasure,self-interest.self-adwuncement arebreakingdownthemoradlawto anextentwhichmustappalallthose whoareinapositiontomarktheir ravages.Thecivillawcandobut littletowithstandthem,andnotinfrequentlythrowsdownitselfsomeof thebarrierswhichthereligionand conscienceofotherageshaderected. AfterhundredsofyearsofChristianitywefindourselvesobliged,year afteryear,topassmanystatuesto regulatematterswhichtheChristian consciencenolongersufficestocontrol.Thiscertainlyisnnmomentto weakenstill,morethoserestraints whichrestfortheirfoundationupon religion.andsuchweakeningisthe evident
RESULTOFTHATNONCONFORMTSTSOLUTION, oftheeducationquestionwhichhis Majesty'sGovernmentwouldfain forceuponus.Ourclaimisvery simple,andinprinciplewecannever recedefromit.Allwhooontribute tothepublicfunds,whetherasratepayersorastaxpayers,havearight toequalconsideration,andweshall neverceasetomaintainthatallare entitledtothesametreatmentin school,legislation,bethey'content withundenominationalteaching,or dotheyconscientiouslyregarditas insufficient.Anydifferentiationisunjust,andweshallunceasinglyrenew ourprotestagainstit(applause).
Butwehavealreadyshownthatin Ipracticewearepreparedtoexertourselvestotheuttermosttoprovide andtomaintainschoolsforourCatholicchildreneventhoughtheState treatusunjustly,asithasdoneso long,andtakeadvantageofourwillingness.inordertorelieveitselfof expensewhichoughttofalluponthe publicfunds.Butas
