KERRY.-TheMostRev.Dr.Mangan,BishopofKerry,vestedincope andmitre,andhearingthecrozierin hishand,addressedalargecongregationintheDominicanChurch,Tralee, onSundayevening,August3.His LordshipstatedthatKillarneyCathedralcontinuedtothepresentdayin theunfinishedstateinwhichitleft thecontractor'shands,morethan fiftyyearsago.Hehadappealedto thepriestsofthediocese,andhewas pleasedtosaythathisappealmet witharesponsegenerousandfarbeyondhismostsanguineexpectations. ThePressAssociationisinformed thatSirThomasEsmonde'swithdrawalofhisintendedresighation doesnotaleoncenecessarilyrestore himtothepositionheformeelyoccupiedintheIrishNationalistParty. Thehon.baronetisnolongeroneof theWhipsoftheParty,andattheir lastmeetinghewascalledupontoresignhisseat.'Chatresolutianremainsinforceuntilithasbeenrescinded,andinconsideringwhetherit shouldbeexpungedMr.Redmond's supportersintheHouseofCommons will,itisunderstood,insistasaconditionprecedentthatSirThomas withdrawshisnamefronitheCouncil oftheSinnFeinorganisation.

M.Butinin"LesEtudes,"October 20th,1901,hasreviewedtheMemorialinanarticleof-10pages.Skrine, inhisluteRadishworkonFontenoy, hassneeredatit.Colin,ofthe FrenchArmy,inhisadmirablebook oftheCampaignsofMarshalSaxe, publishedin1905,devotesavolume of200pagestotheBattleofFontenoy.HegivestheIrishBrigadefull credit.Heshowsthattheletterof Lowendahl,thesecondincommand, statesthetruth.Hehacksitupwith therepro*ofMarshalSaxe,andwith thefactthatLouisXV.cameonthat daytotheTrishBrigadeandthanked theofficersandmen,sayingthathe owedthevictorytotheirdevotion. TheletterofLowendahlisworth givinginfull.Hereitis-

"MarshalSaxehaspubliclystated thattheKingowedthisvictoryto CountLowendahlandtheIrishBrigade.Thesearehisverywords. MarshalSaxe,too,bearstestimonyto thesameeffect:-'Wemovedforward andthe'IrishBrigade,whichledthe van,attackedwiththegreatest possibledaring.'"

CaptainGarbett,R.N.,intheJournaloftheRoyalUnitedServiceInstitutionMagazineoflastyear,pays thesametributetoTrishvalour.The mostimpressiveofallarethewords ofDeBroglieinthesketchofMaria Teresa.Amongtheofficerswhoreceived]'accoladeroyale,aroyalembrace,wereSaxeandCountLally,of theIrishBrigade.Surelythiswas noemptyhonour.Itindicatesthe activeworkdonebytheIrishsoldiers onthateventfulday.

ThePressAssociationisrequested bySirThomas.Eamoride.M.P.,to circulatethefollowing:-Englandand IrelandhavingreportsoftheEnniscorthyConvention,Idesiretocorrect amisapprehensiontheyappearto havecreated.IstatedthatIwas preparedtoactwiththeIrishParty, orwithanyotherbodyofmenwho placedtheassertionofIreland'snationalclaimsintheforefrontoftheir programme.Mr.Gwynn'ssulagsaient statementcommittingmetoreturnto theTrishPartywithoutanyconditionswasnotauthorisedbyme. AnewpointbroughtoutbyCaptain Colin,oftheFrenchArmy,isthat thebatterybroughtupatthelast momentbyLallyorRichleiudidnot breaktheheadoftheEnglishcolumn Thisbatterywascomposedoffour smallgunsofaSwedishmodel,and deliveredjust4volleys.Itsimplyfor ithemomentchangedthefireofthe Englishinfantry.Thefactis,thatthe coldsteeloftheIrishinfantryregimentsdidthefinalwork.Clinton,in his"CrecytoAssaye,"showsthis, andsaysthattheIrishtroopspur- suedtheEnglishdownthehillulintil theywerestoppedbytheadvanceof theBritishcavalry.Heretofore'jtwas believedthattheIrishBrigadehad beenengagedinthefirstencounters withtheEnglish.Thiswasanerror, carefullyfosteredbyVoltaireand otherFrenchwriters.Aneye-witness theMarquessTownsend,pointsout thattheonlyobstacletoBritishsuccesswasthefreshIrishregiments thatwereheldbackbyMarshalSaxe.

Ihaveinmypossessionthe"Lon- donMagazine,"ofMay,1745,which givestheEnglishandFrenchaccounts ofthebattle.Fromitsdescriptions wecaninferthattheIrishBrigade washeldasareserve.TheFrench accountgivesthedetailsoftherout oftheColdstreamGuardsbyBulke- ley'sregimentoftheIrishBrigade, andthecaptureoftheonlyEnglish standardbythem.ItfiguresinHoraceVernet'spainting,atVersalles. ItistothecreditoftheIrishsoldierthathealonehaschangeddefeat intovictory,first,atCremonasecond,atFontenoy,andthird,atWinchester,intheAmericanCivilWar, wherePhilipSheridanturnedthetide ofbattle.Whatweaskoftheworld isjusticetoourheroes.Thiscan onlybeobtainedbymemorialsof sufficientmerittocompelattention. SenatorHendersoncontinuingsaid hehadcalledtheMinister'sattention tothefactwithnodesireotherthan tosee,inconnectionwithourelectoralmatters,thatjusticeshouldbe done,whetheritconcernedasociety oranindividual.Iftheactwasbeing infringedbyanyonewhatsoever,it wasthedutyoftheMinistertosee intoit,andseethatjusticewasdone (Hear,hear.)
