OurCharitable 3ustitutious.

Wehavereceivedtheannualreport bytheSuperintendentofPublicCharitiesfortheyearendingsDecember31 1906.Thereportisbeautifullyillustratedandcontainsafundofinformation.Ourreaderswilltakea specialinterestinwhatthereport saysofourCatholicinstitutions.We thereforeappendafeweatracts:ST,JOSEPH'SIii1RLS' ORPHANAGE,SUBIACO.

UndertheheadingEducationalCondition,thereportsaysofthisinstitution:-TheChiefInspectorofSchools reportsonhisannualexaminationas follows:-"Thisisanexcellentschool Owingtowant.oftimeallthesubjects werenotexamined,butsufficientwere takentoshowthattheschoolagain deservesthemark"Excellent."The teachersmeritthehighestcommendationfortheirpainstakingandeffectivework."Thisreportmust'bevery gratifyingtotheSisters.Fromthe educational.standpoint,theOrphanage occupiesthefirstplaceamongthe otherinstitutionsofasimilarnature. TheReportmakesthefollowingGeneralremarks:-60childrenhaveleftthis institutionduringthepastthree,years andfifty-sixofthianumblerareknown toliecluingwell.Averyfinedisplay ofplainandfancyneedlework,and numerousotherarticles,including cakesandsweets,wereshownatthe Exhibition,andverygenerallyadmired.TheOrphanagewasawarded asilvermedalandcertificatebythe Exhibitionauthorities.AttheentertainmentprovidedattheExhibition bytheinmatesalthevariousinstitutions,thegirlsprovidedseveraldrill displaysofanexceedinglyattractive

naturewhichweremushappreciated bytheaudience.Arrangementsara completeforanumberofImportant additionstothebuildingsatSubiaco. Inadditiontoalargesumnaisedby abazaar,anoldfriendoftheOrphanagehasforwardedavery,handsome contributiontothebuildingfund,in ordertocompletetheproposedbuildings.Thisinstitutioncontinuesasin thepasttoprovideareallyhappy andcomfortablehometothegirls residentthere.Theyarecaredforin themostsatisfactorymannerbya bandofableandzealous,Sisters.The successoftheinstitution,educationallyandotherwise,isnodoubtto someextentduetothefactthatthe sameofficialscontinueinchargefor lengthenedperiods,andlearntoknow thechildrenandallaboutthem.The presentSuperintendent,forinstance, lhasoccupiedthesamepositionfor years,andhermotherlyanddevoted servicesonbehalfof.thechildrencannobbetoohighlyappreciated.

ST.KEVIN'SINDUSTRIALSCHOOL (BOYS'),GLENDALOUGH.

EducationalState:-TheChiefInspectorofSchoolsreportsontheresultofhisexaminationsasfollows:"Theschoolhaspassedaverysatisfactoryexamination.Inwritingand ingeneralneatnessofpaperworkthe boysobtainedaveryhighmark,in spellingandreadingthepasseswere abovethe"Veryfair"classification, butinarithmetictheworkshowed someweakness.ThePboyswerein goodorder,andwereveryobedient andattentivethroughouttheinspection.Sincemylastvisitanexcellent schoolroomhasbeenerected,andthe improvedaccommodationshouldtold totheeffectivenessoftheteaching.

TheBrotherinchargeoftheschoolBrother Nulty-hasworkedhard andsuccessfully,andhispainstaking effortsarebeyondpraise."

GeneralRemarks.-Duringthepast threeyears41boyshavebeendischarevd.29areknowntobedoingwell

The'oldboys'areencouragedtowrite andtovisittheschool.Thenew wingwhichwasrecentlyaddedtothe mainbuilding,hasgreatlyincreased theaccommodationoftheschool.The completed,buildingshaveaveryhandsomeappearance.Theboyslooked healthyandwellcaredfor,andthey havetheappearanceofbeingunder carefulandjudiciousmanagement.

TheRev.FatherFlynncontinuesin charge,andexercisesthesamekindly andconsideratecontrolhehasdone foranumberofyears.

EducationalState.-TheChiefInspectorofSchoolsreportsontheresult ofhisexaminationsasfollows:-"The examinationofthisschoolwasto havetakenplaceinDecember,butwas postponedattherequestofthePrincipal.Theresultoftheexamination areverycreditable.Theteachershave workedconscientiouslyandwithsuccess,andtheboyshavelearnthabits ofpromptobedience.

ANTRIM.-FromtheIrishpapers thisweektohand,theBelfaststrike didnotproducetheseriousriotsallegedbyourcablegrams.The"Trish Weekly"saysthatthereportersfor thegreatLondondailiesgrosslyexaggeratedoccurrences.Actionswhich wereperfectlypeacefulwereconstrued bythesereportersintodisorders,riotingetc.OurCablegramsnaturally gaveusthecreamoftheselies.The draftingofmilitaryintoBelfast,with theirgettinggunsandmaximguns wasfiercelyresentedbyallsavethe plutocrats.Thesoldierstookfull possessionofthesets*,andwereguilty ofmuchmoreseriouscrimesthanthe strikers.Womenwereinsulted,and draggedbythemthroughthestreets, andthereawsnotonetodefend citizensfromtheirrowdyism.Our cablesalsosaidthattheriotingwas confinedtotheNationalistquarters; inanothercolumnwequoteMr. LindsayCrawford,anorangonan,sayingthat90percentofthestrikers weeorangemen.Wealsoknowthat theOrangelodgesthroughoutUlster leviedaweeklytaxupontheirmemberstosupport.thestrikers.The truthisthatreligiousfactionism,is fastsecedingbeforetheonwardmarch ofdemocracyamongthelabouring menoftheNorth.

4.abig*demonstrationwasheldat Finea,Co.Westmeath,inhonourof thememoryofColonelMylesO'Reilly "MylestheSlasher,whofellatthe bridgeofFinea.1647,whilefightingthetroopsof"blackMonroe,"in thecauseoftheCatholicFederation. Althoughthelistofspeakersseemed somewhatcuriouslyselected,itwas announcedthatthemeetingwastobe non-sectionalandpurelyhistorical, andthisarrangementwasmoreor lessobserved.Severn]bannerswere rangedalongsidetheplatform,the localbannerfromFineabearingthe inscription,"Westmeathsolidforthe IrishParty."Theattendancewas extremelygood,Rallinacrit.Castlepollard,Granard.Contehill,Abbeylara Cavan.andDublinbeingrepresented. Theeleventhannual"Oireachtas" Weekwasformallyinauguratedinthe RoundRoomoftheRotunda,Dublin, onMondayAugust4th.Theproceedingtooktheformofapublicmeeting The"Leader"saystherewasanabsenceofenthusiasmandthatthe crowdwasnutaslargeas it mi,ght have .been. Dr. Douglas Hyde,addressingthe meeting,saidthattheintermediate systemwasnowdoingmoreforIrish thanthenationalschools.600more intermediatestudentspresentedthemselvesforexaminationinIrishthis yearthanlast,andabout3.200passed.TheGaelicLeaguehasestablishedaneducationalsystemofitsown. TherearenowsixGaelicCollegesat work.andthereisnotenoughroom forapplicants.Thereareelevenorganizersand80travellingteachers workingfortheLeague.

THEBOASTEDPROSPERITYOF ULSTER.

LABOURFORCESBANISHING SECTARIANISM.

ThepeopleofIrelandwereatruly'religiouspeople,whethertheywereProtestantsorItomanCatholic.(Hear, hear.)Whattheworkerswantedwas this:Thattheemployersshouldbring theirChristianityintotheirdailyrelationswiththeiremployees.Itwas womenandchildrenwhowerealmost whollyemployedintheboastedlinen manufactureofUlster.Theyhadmen ekingoutamiserableexistence,emsPlayedhalf-time,sometimesnotemployedatall,oftentimesspongingon theirwivesandchildrenwhowere workinginthesefactories.Whenthe dockers'andcarters'questionwas settlenthelabourquestionwasnot goingtobesettledinUlster.It wouldnotbesettleduntiltheyhad settledthelinentradealso,andthey wouldnotstopuntiltheyhademancipatedeVeryhomerandvillage throughoutthecountry.(Hear,hear) Theyweretherethatdaytosaythat theoldsectariancursehadbeenbanishedforeverinUlster.(Hear,hear) Theysimplyaskedthatthelabourer shouldgetafairreturnoftheprofits Ninetypercent.ofthe,menonstrike weremembersoftheoldOrangeInstitution.Dublin.Castlehadendeavoured,evenoverthispolicequestion, tointroducethereligiousbigotry questionagain,buttheycouldnever succeedinitinBelfastagain.They hadruledIrelandforgenerationsalongsectarianlines.Anothergeneration-andhestoodforasectionof them-(hear,hear)-weredeterminedto standwiththeirhackstothepast. Theyweredeterminedthatreligious bigotryandpartystrifewouldno longerseparatethepeoplewhencommoninterestsdemandedthatthey shouldunite.Themenwhohadgone beforethemhadlaidsurethefoundationofnationalunityinIrelandmenlikeParnellandDevitt.(Cheers) Nomantookagreaterinterestinthe questionoflabourthanthelate MichaelDevitt.'He(Mr.Crawford) hadthehonourofenjoyinghisfriendshipbeforehedied,andheknewhow keenlyhelookedforwardtothecause oflabourasaplatformonwhichto unit,.themenofIrelandasnoother could.Helookedforwardtotheday whentherewouldcomefromBelfast, notIwoorthreedelegates,hutwhen twelveorthirteenspecialtrainswould bringthemenofUlstertostand thereonthenineacrestoproclaim therightofIrishmentoafairshare oftheprofitsandindustryintheir owncountry,andtherightofIrishmentoseisethereinsofGovernment andpowerthathadsolongbeen usurpedbyanintolerableascendancy.

ApublicmeetingwasheldonBunday,August4,inPhoenixPark,Dublin,forthepurposeofsympathising withthedockersandcartersthenon strikeinBelfast.Mr.LindsayCrawford,an"independentoraugeman" madethefollowingremarkablespeech, Hesaidthatthemovementwasnot merelyaquestioninwhichthedockers andcarters,ofBelfastwereconcerned -itmeantthattheywereonthe thresholdofthefinalcontestbetween democracyandfeudalism.Theywere takingpartinthelastgreatbattleof civilisation-thebattleofthepeople. ThestrugglemeantinIrelandonce andforalltheGovernment'sauthoritymustcometothepeople.(Hear, hear.)Inagreatprecessionwhich tookplaceInBelfastrecentlythey hadtheShankillRoadshakinghands withtheFallsRoad,andOrangeand Greenweretrulyblendedtogetherfor thefirsttimeinthehistoryofthat greatcity.Theyheardagreatdeal aboutthewealthofthepeoplegenerallyinBelfast.. Well,hehadseen moreofthatgrindinggenteelpoverty intheboastedprosperousBelfastthan hehadeverseeninDublin.Theboast edwealthof'Ulstermeantthewealth ofafew.AccordingtotheLondon "DailyMail,"whichhadbeenblackguardingtidemeninthecontest,the averagewagesofthemenouton strikeamountedtofifteenshillingsa weekforaninety-hoursweek.(Shame) Howcouldamandecentlysupport hiswifeandchildrenon15s.awe?

ImmediatelyafterMr.Larkinhad organisedthementheyweregranted anincreaseofwagesfrom5s.to11s. aweek,butthemasterssaidthey wouldnotrecogniseT.arkinorthe society.Itwastoolateinthetwentiethcenturytosaythattradesunionkmwouldnotberecognised.Itwas chargedthatlabourerswantedtorevoletionisetheconditionsofsociety- thattheywantedtodoaway'with theChurches,clergymen,midreligion. LordClanricarde'sstyleoforatory isasuniqueasitsowner.Thewavingofonehandandthenoftheother atalternatesentenceswasthemost conspicuouscharacteristic,huteven thoseinhisimmediatevicinityfound itdifficulttofollowthe*elfinof thoughtwhichhewaspresumat4ypursuing.Itmaybeaddedthatinthe courseofhisspeechheoncedrewout fromatrouserspocketasmallbottle, uncorkedit,drewasmalldraught, replaceditinhistrouserspocket,and thenresumedhisspeech.Itwasan unusualsight;huteventhatincident failedtoevokesympathy.Thedebate otherwisefolloweditsexpectedcourse.

ItshouldberememileredthatZamlinkBairnisnotonlysoothingand healing,butisantisepticandgermicidalaswell,andcuts,bruises,andsocalledi'trivial"injuriestreatedwith thispurebalmareatoncepurified andmadegerm-proof,andperfect healingassured.

BOYCOTTEDBYTHELORDS.

ThecentreofinterestonTuesday inParliamentlay,notintheHouse ofCommons,butintheHouseof Lords,saystheLondonCorrespondent ofthe"IrishWeekly,"Saturday, August10.ThefactthattheEvicted TenantsBillwasunderconsideration wasenoughtoattractIrishattention, aswasevidencedbythepresenceof Mr.RedmondandanumberofNationalistmembers;butnothingcompels interestineitherHouselikethestrikingofapersonalnote,andthatalso wasforthcoming.Itbecameknown earlyintheeveningintheCommons thattheMarquisofClanricarde,of unhappynotoriety,wasinhisplace intheotherHouse,andhencethere wasacontinuousprocessionofEnglishmembers,nnxioustoobtaina glimpseofoneofthemost,extraordinaryandunpopularoflegislators. Hewasthecynosureofalleyesas hesatlonelyandunfriendedatthe cornerofoneofthebenches,andso eagerwerehisbrotherpeerstoavoid himthatthroughouttheeveningnone ofthemeventookaseatonthesame bench.Hisill-fittingclothesserved toemphasisetheshrunkenandsomewhatemaciatedfigure,andgeneral surprisewasexpressedathisshabby anddecrepidappearance.TheTories wereanxiousthatheshouldnot,take partinthedebate-first,becausethey fearedthathisinterventionwould prejudicetheiroppositiontotheBill and,secondly.becauseheissucha hadadvertisement.forhereditarylegislation,butLordClanricardewasnot tohedeniedtheluxuryofaspeech. Hisuprisingledtooneofthemost dramaticsceneseverwitnessedinthe HouseofLords,foralthoughhispersonalityrivetedtheintenseattention ofnilhislisteners,thenwasnota voiceraisedinencouragementorap-

AddressingtheCatholicConference atPrestonyesterday,Archbishop' Bourne,ofWestminster,declaredthat itwasimpossibletomaintainthe CatholicschoolswithoutStateaid. Iftheschoolswereextinguishedthen thesocialism,anarchy,andpolitical disorderthatwouldfollowwouldhe onlyanaturalretribution.HeannealedtotheNonconformistsnotto deservethehatefulnameofpersecutors.

Establishedfor who,forthemostpart,professedno religiousbelief,butwereactuatedby anintenseandall-absorbingdesireto arriveatthetruth.Theyactedas meremachineswithnopersonalbias, with"noaxetogrind,"withnosystemofreligiousbelieftodefend.They soughtandpublishedthetruthat everycostandtheChurch,"thepillarandgroundoftruth,"stoodto gainandhasgained.Theclergymen oftheChurchofEnglandare,practicallyspeaking,alwaysgentlemenand usuallycultured,andmanyofthem havebeenandareeminenthistoricalscholars.andvirulentattacks ontheCatholicChurchareasrare amongthemasistheirpresenceon theplatformsfromwhichbigotsand sectarian-mongerscalumniateher. Nevertheless,itisbutnaturalthatthe most.eminentAnglicanscholarsshould intheinterpretationofhistoricalfacts beliaised,unconsciously,perhaps, often,bytheirreligiousbeliefs.Itis butnaturalthatthesamefactsshould beinterpretedindifferentlights,accordingtotheprejudicesoropinions oftheindividuals.AnAtheistwill seeinthelatehistoryofFranceand inthefirmconductoftheFrenchPrelatesandthePop'somethinictotally differenttothatseenbyaCatholic.
