WhenTtalyoverturnedtheTemporal Power,in1870theItaliangovernmentpastedwhatitwaspleasedto call"alawofguarantees"andthere initallowedthePopeanannual grantoftwomillionlire(£80,000), inlieuoftherevenueshelostwith theendingofthePemporalPower. ThePopeshavenevertouchedor drawnthiscompoundfromtheItaliantreasury.

Priorto1870,therewereJaiPeter's pencecollectionsintheUnitedStates, nor,indeedinotherportionsofthe Catholicworld.Thecollectionhas beenregularlyinstitutedtomeetthe needsofthePapacy,sinceitsrevenues,asatemporalsovereignty,were cutoff.Thegreatreligiousorders havealwaysrenderedtributetothe Papaltreasury,andundoubtedlythe sumtotalofthistributehasbeen muchenlargedsince1870.

InAustraliawhereallkindsoflabourissohighlyremunerateda Federalmemberisworththeincreasedsalarytheyhavevotedthemselvesorheisunworthyaltogetherof hisposition.Manywouldbeinclined tosaythatmostoftheserepresentativesareunworthyoftheirpositihn evenweretheydisinterestedenoughto givetheirservicesgratis.
