Atthepresenttimediatribesfiom politiciansdolittledamagetotheobjectsoftheirattacks.Thegreaterpart ofapolitician'stimeseemstobe takenwithmakingchargesagranst othermen,refutingaccusationsagainst himselfandmakingcountercharges. Thepublicaretoowearyanddisgustedtotakeanynoticeofthese utterancesofpoliticians.Stillaman standinginhisseatinParliament possessesatremendouspowertoinjureanenemy,whomrivalry,jealousy,orpicquemayimpelhimto attack.Legally,heisprotectedin inflictingthatinjury-morallyheis not.itismanifestlyasmuchagainst theprimaryprincipleofjustice,and charitytoslanderthereasanywhere. Theguiltbeingmeasuredtotheinjury inflicted,themoraldepravityofa calumnyinsuchaplaceisoftenincreaseditcarrieswithit,sometimes,anadditionalforcederived fromthepositionofthepersonwho calumniates.Nothingshowsthe differencebetweenlegal'justiceand whatwemayterm'realjusticeas thefactapersonmayinParliament, withabsoluteimpunity,utterthe grossestslanderorcalumnies,for whichasaprivateindividualhewould heheavilyfinedorimprisoned. We haveoftenheardofthemeaningignorantProtestantsattachtothe word."Indulgence"-towit,licenseto sinwithimpunity.ThisParliamentaryprivilegeiscertainlyan"indulgence"inaverynon-Catholicsense.

Thelawabsolvesthepoliticaloffenderfromeverysinorslander. To abolishthisthe"indulgence"would heformanyagreatblessing. It woulddiminishtheamountoftime wastedinpersonalities,chargesand "formalwithdrawals"inParliament. Itwouldconsiderablyraisethetone ofthatinstitution.Itwouldbenefit thecountry,asitwouldgivemore timetoworkandlesstopersonal "persiflage"andbillinsgate.

Japan.Withghesigningofthetreatiesin1858thesementookuptheir residenceintheportcitiesofYokohamaandNegasaki,achurchbeing builtintheformercityin18(12. 'ThreeyearslaterachurchwasdedicatedinNegasaki,whichhadbeena Christianstrongholdbeforethepersecution,tothememoryofthe26 martyrswhohadsuffereddeathin thatcityin1597.

OfRomanCatholicchurchesinJa- pan-usuallymoreprepossessingin appearancethantheProtestant- thereare145,with385preachingsta- tionsinaddition.Themembershipis now60.000ministeredtoby243 missionaries,119ofwhomarepriests and12,1nuns.Thereare33.Tapanesepriestsand269nativehelpers.
