Imaintainthattheonlypartof Irelandwherethereisreligiousbigotryandintoleranceisinthatcorner ofUlsterwhereProtestantspredominate.andinorder,ifpossible,to provethis,Iamaskingthefollowing questionoftheIrishSecretary:-

AmeetingoftheIrishParliamentary PartywasheldatWestminsteron June11,whenitwasdirectedthat thefollowingstatementbeissuedby theChairman(Mr.JohnRedmond)on behalfoftheparty:ThereceptionoftheGovernmentBill fortheassociationoftheIrishpeople inthemanagement.ofIrishaffairsis aneventofthefirstmagnitude,and thesituationcreatedtherebyisone ofextremeurgencyandimportance. TheIrishNationalConference, whichrejectedtheBillbyaspontaneousanduninfluenceddecision,wasthe largestandmostrepresentativeever broughttogetherinIreland,andits verdictwasunanimousandemphati..
ouscalltoarmsoftheIrishpeople, withtheobjectofforcingtheIrish questiontotheforefrontofthepoliticsofthehour.Experiencehas shownhowthiscanbeeffected.Anotherproofhasjustbeenaffordedthat HumeRulecannotbewonbyapolicyofconciliationalone.Itcanbe wononlybyhardlighting,byavigorousandwell-sustainedagitationin Ireland,byauactive,pledge-bound, anddisciplinedpartyintheHouseof Commons,bythethoroughorganisationoftheIrishvoteinGreatBritainanditsuseabsolutelyindependentofEnglishpartyintereststopush forwardthecauseofHomeRule,and bytakingeveryopportunityandevery meansthatofferinIreland,andpar- ticularlyinGreatBritain,toforce uponpublicattentionthegrievance whichIrelandhassufferedandthe ruinouseffectsofBritishruleinthe country.
IftheIrishpeopleshowthemselves inearnestontheselineswhateverGovernmentmaybeinpowerwillfinditselfatanearlydatecoercedintointroducingaBillforthebettergovernmentofIrelandverydifferent fromthatwhichwasrecentlyrejected bytheNationalConventioninDublin. Inorderthatthesituationmayreceivethatconsiderationwhichits gravitydemands,ameetingoftheNationalDirectorywillbesummonedimmediately,andupontheoutcomeof thatmeetingthefutureofthemovementmustlargelydepend.
Therecanbelittledoubtthatthe country,perceivingthattheIrish strugglehasentereduponanewand finalphase,willrecognisetheimportanceofcarryingouttheresolutions oftheConvention,andofextending totheIrishPartyandtotheNationalorganisationinapromptandgenerousspiritthatactivesympathyand supportwhicharenowmorethan evernecessaryiftherightofIreland toself-governmentistobetriumphan tlyachieved.

Anunusuallyimpressiveandinterestingceremonywastheannual fieldMassthatwascelebrated May25thintheopenairuponthe paradegroundoftheNavyYardin Brooklyn.Neverbeforewerethere somanypersunsgatheredinthat boroughforaceremonyofthatnature.Thenumberthatattendedor triedtoattendwasabout35,000.In spiteoftheampleproportionsofthe paradegroundsthousandswereunabletogetintotheenclosure,sopackedwasitwithsoldiers,sailorsand membersofmilitaryandcivicbodies whoweretheguestsoftheGloucester NavalCampNo.5oftheUnited SpanishWarVeterans.Scoresupon scoresstoodoutsidethefenceuntil Masswasfinished.
Althoughtheatmospherewasraw andcoldthecrowdbegantoarrive asearlyas8o'clock.By10,the hoursetfortheMass,therewaslittle standingroomonthegroundsand hundredswerestillpouringinthrough theFlushingavenuegateiandtheseveralprivateentrances.Company aftercompanyarrivedwithhandsor drumcorpsattheirheadsandtook theirplacesinthefieldatthenorthernendofwhichthe'altarhadbeen erected.

Itwassoonafter10o'clockwhen thecelebrantoftheMass,Rev.WilliamReaney,ChaplainoftheNavy, andthepriestswhoweretoassist himmarchedfromtheofficeofthe sallyportacrossthefieldtothealtar.Allweregorgeousvestments. TheuniformedcorpsoftheKnights ofColumbusactedasguardofhonor. Besidestheuniformedcorpsofthe Knightsmorethan2,000membersof theOrderwereinattendance. The greatcrowdheardinsilencethepriest singtheMass,aidedbyachoirunder thedirectionofProf.AlbertCaswell.
Thechoirsangthesolemnmusicwith excellenteffect,manyprofessionalsingersaddingtheirvoicestotheharmony.Amongthosewhoassistedat theceremonywiththecelebrantwere FatherChidwick,whowastheChaplainoftheMainewhenshewas blownupintheharborofHavana, andRev.JohnNash,ofBrooklyn.At theelevationoftheHostthesignal wasgivenandallthearmedtroops presentedarms.Nosalutewasfired. TheuniformedcorpsoftheKnights ofColumbuskneltatthis,pointofthe ceremony.FatherReaneymadea shortaddressinwhichhepraisedand thankedtheprojectorsofthemilitaryfieldMassfortheirdevotionto religion.
THEGRAVESOFTHEVETERANS DECORATED.
Inspiteofthedarkcloudsandthe windthatpresagedrain,thescene wasamostimpressiveone.There wereveteransofseveralwarsinthe lineandthereweremilitiamenand firemen,too.intheimmensebody thatoccupiedtheopenspacebefore thealtar. Tothesouthwasthe standreservedfortheofficersofthe yardandtheirguests,whilethebalconiesofthebarracks,thealtarand theofficers'stand,wasdecoratedwith flagsand colors predominating.Hereandthereloopedupwiththemweretheemblemsof variousbodiestakingpart,Papalflags andtheemblemofIreland.Thealtar wasalmostcompletelycoveredwith flowersandthenationalcolors,,andon thesidesweremanyminiaturecannon andbrassmortars.
AmongthetroopsunderarmsparticipatingintheservicewereadetachmentoftheTwelfthRegiment, UnitedStatesmarinesfromthe BrooklynNavyYardandfromallthe shipsinthesewatersblue-jackets, severalhundredstrongtheSixtyninthRegiment,twocompaniesofthe FourteenthRegiment,NationalGuard, twocompaniesoftheForty-seventh. "theSecondNavalBattalionandthe FirstandSecondRegimentsofIrish Volunteers.TheSixty-fifthRegiment ofRoyalRiflesofMontrealandthe RoyalFusiliersstationedatHalifax, NovaScotia,aswellasthemilitiaof severalotherStates,wererepresented amongthetroops.

Thefirstofaseriesofentertainments inbehalfofthestall-fundswasheld onWednesdaynight,July10,in Wells'Hall,Cottesloe.Ittookthe formofaFancyDressBallforchildrenand'adults.Theproceedsareto heapportionedequallyamongthe stalls.Theballwasanimmensesuccesssocially.Thechildrenheldthe floorfrom8to10.Theadultsfrom 10p.m.to2a.m.Thehallwasliterallypacked.FatherO'Neilandhis energeticcommitteehaveeveryreason forbeinggratifiedwiththeresult.
