ForthefirstperiodinhisInvestigations,includingthefifteenth,sixteenth,andeighteenthcenturies,the authorcitesthenamesofeight'-two men,notedleadersintheirdomain, seventy-nineofwhomwerebelievers inChristianity.Amongtheseare Newton,Huyghens,Leibnitz,Galileo, andCopernicus.

EIGHTEENTHCENTURYBELIEVERS.

Inthesecondperiod,theeighteenth century,fiftyfivenamesaregivenfiveinfidels,elevenwhoseviewsare unknown,whilethirty-nineadmitted theexistenceofGod,ofthesoul,and ofrevelation.

Thethirdperiodembracesthenineteenthcentury. Dr.Dennertcites onehundredandsixty-threeillustriousnamesofthisnumberahundredandtwenty-fourwerebelievers, twenty-twohelddefiniteopinions, whileonlytwelvewereinfidels.

AmongmodernscientistsofunswervingChristianfaitharenumbered aHermite,aPasteur,aHauy,a Faraday,J.B.Dumas,LeVerrier, Cauchy,Ampere,Volta,andmany others.Infine,amongthethree hundrednamescollectedbyDr.Dennerttherearefoundtwohundred andforty-twowithreligiousconvictions,repudiatingthedoctrineofmaterialism,andloudlyproclaimingthe harmonyexistingbetweenFaithand Science. AsexpressingthesentimentsofinnumerableCatholicscientists,wemayquoteadeclarationof theillustriousCauchy,oneofthe greatestmathematicianstheworldhas everseen.

WhileDr.DennertplacesDarwin amongtheunbelievingfraternity,itis welltonotethatDarwinneverdeclaredhimselfamaterialist.To HerbertSpencerthemostcertainof alltruthswastheexistenceofaninscrutablePowerinwhichweliveand moveandhaveourbeing.

IrishTolerance.

ThecommunityoftheUrsulineConvent,Thurles,onFridaynight,June 7,celebratedthecentenaryofthe canonisationofthefoundressofthe Order.Theceremonyembracedamusicalandvocalentertainment,graceMIdancesexecutedbythepupilsof St.Angela'sAcademy,andafireworksdisplayonthepicturesqueislandattachedtotheconvent.The groundsweredeckedwithbannersand many-coloredlights.TheHolyFamily Bandplayedsomeniceselectionsof musicontheislandduringtheevening.

Hewas afraidthatinScotlandandEnglandtherewasafargreaterconceptionoftheextentofthefeelingthan wasjustified,becauseitdidnot existinthecommunitytohalfthe extentthatitexistedinthenewspapers.Intheunsettleddistricts itwasnotRomanCatholicspersecutingProtestantsnorHomeRulers persecutingUnionists,butitwas

AtthePresbyterianGeneralAssemblyinBelfastonFriday,June7, theRev.Dr.M'Kean,ex-Moderator, saidthatatpresentthousandsof acresoflandinCentralIrelandwere insuchahadconditionthatacow couldnotwalkonthem.Hethought itwasastrangethingthataGovernmentwhichwasreadytoinvest itsmoneyinIrelandwouldnotinvest itindrainingthisland.Withregardtothegrazingsystem,Dr.McKeansaidhehadformedsonicideas whichindirectlyhadbeencondemned. Thegrazingsystemwasdoingmore injury,notonlytothePresbyterian Church,buttothewholeIrishpeople,thananyotherconditionofthings thathehadseen.Hisobjectionto theserancheswasthattheywerekept coveredwithbullocks,andaman couldhardlyheseeninthosedistricts. Hethoughtthelandsshouldbecultivated,sothatemploymentwould begiventothepeopleofIreland, whichshouldheanagriculturalcountry.Further,hedeclaredthatwhat thePresbyterianshadtodowasto keepthemanhoodofthecountryin Ireland.Dealingwiththeattitudeof SouthernCatholicstowardsPresbyterians,hesaidalltheministersinthe South,withoneortwoexceptions. wereunanimousinspeakinghighlyof theintoleranceandgoodwillshown tothembythosewhodifferedfrom theminfaith.

CrimelessIreland.

ThoughNorthTipperaryisthecock pitoftheagitationforlandreform, itisoneofthemostcrimelessdistrictsinEurope.Timeandagain wefindthejudgescomplimenting GrandJuriesonthesatisfactoryconditionoftheRiding,andtheabsence ofcrime,andoftenthecalendarisa completeblank.Infacttheworkof thejudgesisgetting"smallerbydegreesandbeautifullyless."Really onegaoldeliveryintheyearwould sufficeforthewholecounty,whichhas nowonlyonegaol,andthatowingto thescarcityofprisoners,isreduced tothethird-class.Thebusinessfor theQuarterSessionsnowonCircuit isaboutthesmallestonrecord. TherewereonlyafewtriflingCrown casesfordisposalatNenagh,andthe CrownlistforThurlesthisweek-one ofthemost'populousdistricts'inthe NorthRiding-isablankItismuch thesamestoryatAssizes,andthisin acountywhereanagrarianrevolution istakingplace! Mr.W.O'Malley,M.P.,inaletter tothe"BritishWeekly,"writes:HavinglivedmostofmylifeinEngland,Iamfullyawareofthedeepseatedprejudicethatprevailsagainst Ireland,especiallyagainstIrelandas Catholicandpriest-riddencountry.

Astatement,suchasthatyouquote fromawriterinthe"SaturdayReview,"viz.,"thatthereisatownin Mayowherethepeopledarenothold ameetingonthekillingoftheirpigs withouttheapprovaloftheirpriest," isswallowedwithoutquestionor doubt.Whoeverheardofameeting beingcalledforthekillingofpigs? Imaintainthattheonlypartof Irelandwherethereisreligiousbigotryandintoleranceisinthatcorner ofUlsterwhereProtestantspredominate.andinorder,ifpossible,to provethis,Iamaskingthefollowing questionoftheIrishSecretary:-

AmeetingoftheIrishParliamentary PartywasheldatWestminsteron June11,whenitwasdirectedthat thefollowingstatementbeissuedby theChairman(Mr.JohnRedmond)on behalfoftheparty:ThereceptionoftheGovernmentBill fortheassociationoftheIrishpeople inthemanagement.ofIrishaffairsis aneventofthefirstmagnitude,and thesituationcreatedtherebyisone ofextremeurgencyandimportance. TheLiberals,influencedbytherecep- tiongiveninsomequarterstothedevolutionproposalsofLordDunraven andhisfriends,becameconvincedthat Irelandwouldbesatisfiedwiththe settlementoftheclaimforHomeRule byapolicyofinstalments,andconsequently,atthelastgeneralelection wereinducedtopledgethemselvesto attemptasettlementontheselines, whilstproclaimingatthesametime thattheultimatesettlementmustbe HomeRule,andthatthatsettlement mustbeeffectedasandwhenoppor- tunityoffered,andthatthepolicyof instalmentswasintendedtoleadup toandpreparethewayforthelargerpolicy.TheIrishvoteinGreat BritainwasgiventotheLiberalsat thegeneralelectionnotbecausethe Irishpeopleapprovedoftheirpolicy orwereinanywayboundtothem, hutbecauseIrishmenbadtochoose betweentheLiberalsandtheTory Party,whowereactivelyengagedin enforcingtheCoercionAct,whowere pledgedagainstHomeRuleorany stepinthatdirection,andwhohad onlyjustbeendefeatedinanattempt toreducetheIrishrepresentationat Ivistminsterbyone-fourthofitstotal, Aftertheelection,andowingtothe persistentrepresentationsofcertain officialsinIrelandandofsomeIrishmenfromwhombetterjudgmentmight havebeenexpected,theGovernment concludedthattheIrishpeoplewould bepreparedtoacceptevenamuch lesssatisfactoryBillthanthatwhich theConventionrejected.Theyrefused tobeguidedbytheadviceoftheIrish representatives,andtheyintroduced theIrishGovernmentBillinthe shapeinwhichitisnowknown.

TheIrishNationalConference, whichrejectedtheBillbyaspontaneousanduninfluenceddecision,wasthe largestandmostrepresentativeever broughttogetherinIreland,andits verdictwasunanimousandemphati..

ouscalltoarmsoftheIrishpeople, withtheobjectofforcingtheIrish questiontotheforefrontofthepoliticsofthehour.Experiencehas shownhowthiscanbeeffected.Anotherproofhasjustbeenaffordedthat HumeRulecannotbewonbyapolicyofconciliationalone.Itcanbe wononlybyhardlighting,byavigorousandwell-sustainedagitationin Ireland,byauactive,pledge-bound, anddisciplinedpartyintheHouseof Commons,bythethoroughorganisationoftheIrishvoteinGreatBritainanditsuseabsolutelyindependentofEnglishpartyintereststopush forwardthecauseofHomeRule,and bytakingeveryopportunityandevery meansthatofferinIreland,andpar- ticularlyinGreatBritain,toforce uponpublicattentionthegrievance whichIrelandhassufferedandthe ruinouseffectsofBritishruleinthe country.

IftheIrishpeopleshowthemselves inearnestontheselineswhateverGovernmentmaybeinpowerwillfinditselfatanearlydatecoercedintointroducingaBillforthebettergovernmentofIrelandverydifferent fromthatwhichwasrecentlyrejected bytheNationalConventioninDublin. Inorderthatthesituationmayreceivethatconsiderationwhichits gravitydemands,ameetingoftheNationalDirectorywillbesummonedimmediately,andupontheoutcomeof thatmeetingthefutureofthemovementmustlargelydepend.

Therecanbelittledoubtthatthe country,perceivingthattheIrish strugglehasentereduponanewand finalphase,willrecognisetheimportanceofcarryingouttheresolutions oftheConvention,andofextending totheIrishPartyandtotheNationalorganisationinapromptandgenerousspiritthatactivesympathyand supportwhicharenowmorethan evernecessaryiftherightofIreland toself-governmentistobetriumphan tlyachieved.

Anunusuallyimpressiveandinterestingceremonywastheannual fieldMassthatwascelebrated May25thintheopenairuponthe paradegroundoftheNavyYardin Brooklyn.Neverbeforewerethere somanypersunsgatheredinthat boroughforaceremonyofthatnature.Thenumberthatattendedor triedtoattendwasabout35,000.In spiteoftheampleproportionsofthe paradegroundsthousandswereunabletogetintotheenclosure,sopackedwasitwithsoldiers,sailorsand membersofmilitaryandcivicbodies whoweretheguestsoftheGloucester NavalCampNo.5oftheUnited SpanishWarVeterans.Scoresupon scoresstoodoutsidethefenceuntil Masswasfinished.

Althoughtheatmospherewasraw andcoldthecrowdbegantoarrive asearlyas8o'clock.By10,the hoursetfortheMass,therewaslittle standingroomonthegroundsand hundredswerestillpouringinthrough theFlushingavenuegateiandtheseveralprivateentrances.Company aftercompanyarrivedwithhandsor drumcorpsattheirheadsandtook theirplacesinthefieldatthenorthernendofwhichthe'altarhadbeen erected.

Itwassoonafter10o'clockwhen thecelebrantoftheMass,Rev.WilliamReaney,ChaplainoftheNavy, andthepriestswhoweretoassist himmarchedfromtheofficeofthe sallyportacrossthefieldtothealtar.Allweregorgeousvestments. TheuniformedcorpsoftheKnights ofColumbusactedasguardofhonor. Besidestheuniformedcorpsofthe Knightsmorethan2,000membersof theOrderwereinattendance. The greatcrowdheardinsilencethepriest singtheMass,aidedbyachoirunder thedirectionofProf.AlbertCaswell.

Thechoirsangthesolemnmusicwith excellenteffect,manyprofessionalsingersaddingtheirvoicestotheharmony.Amongthosewhoassistedat theceremonywiththecelebrantwere FatherChidwick,whowastheChaplainoftheMainewhenshewas blownupintheharborofHavana, andRev.JohnNash,ofBrooklyn.At theelevationoftheHostthesignal wasgivenandallthearmedtroops presentedarms.Nosalutewasfired. TheuniformedcorpsoftheKnights ofColumbuskneltatthis,pointofthe ceremony.FatherReaneymadea shortaddressinwhichhepraisedand thankedtheprojectorsofthemilitaryfieldMassfortheirdevotionto religion.

THEGRAVESOFTHEVETERANS DECORATED.

Inspiteofthedarkcloudsandthe windthatpresagedrain,thescene wasamostimpressiveone.There wereveteransofseveralwarsinthe lineandthereweremilitiamenand firemen,too.intheimmensebody thatoccupiedtheopenspacebefore thealtar. Tothesouthwasthe standreservedfortheofficersofthe yardandtheirguests,whilethebalconiesofthebarracks,thealtarand theofficers'stand,wasdecoratedwith flagsand colors predominating.Hereandthereloopedupwiththemweretheemblemsof variousbodiestakingpart,Papalflags andtheemblemofIreland.Thealtar wasalmostcompletelycoveredwith flowersandthenationalcolors,,andon thesidesweremanyminiaturecannon andbrassmortars.

AmongthetroopsunderarmsparticipatingintheservicewereadetachmentoftheTwelfthRegiment, UnitedStatesmarinesfromthe BrooklynNavyYardandfromallthe shipsinthesewatersblue-jackets, severalhundredstrongtheSixtyninthRegiment,twocompaniesofthe FourteenthRegiment,NationalGuard, twocompaniesoftheForty-seventh. "theSecondNavalBattalionandthe FirstandSecondRegimentsofIrish Volunteers.TheSixty-fifthRegiment ofRoyalRiflesofMontrealandthe RoyalFusiliersstationedatHalifax, NovaScotia,aswellasthemilitiaof severalotherStates,wererepresented amongthetroops.

Whentheservicewasfinishedthe troopsparadedbeforethealtaron theirwayout.Someofthetroops, includingtheNavalPostoftheGrand Army,accompaniedFatherReaneyto thenavalcemeteryafewblocksfrom theparadeground,whereaspecial servicetookplaceinhonorofthesailorsburiedthere.Someoftheflowersusedtodecoratethealtaratthe militaryMassweretakentothis cemeteryandplaceduponthegraves oftheveteransailors.Theremainderoftheflowerswasdistributed amongtheothercemeteries.

Weareseekingtoattaina likepre-eminenceinallmattersthat pertaintoourreligionandthe Church.CatholicsofCottesloeare makingeveryefforttohavethebest equippedparishinthediocese.Towardstheendoftheyeartheyintend havingabazaartowipeawaya largepartofthedebtwhichnow encumberstheChurch,Thereareto befourstalls,andtheladieswhoare tohavechargehavealreadysetto workenergeticallytoprovidefunds. Thefirstofaseriesofentertainments inbehalfofthestall-fundswasheld onWednesdaynight,July10,in Wells'Hall,Cottesloe.Ittookthe formofaFancyDressBallforchildrenand'adults.Theproceedsareto heapportionedequallyamongthe stalls.Theballwasanimmensesuccesssocially.Thechildrenheldthe floorfrom8to10.Theadultsfrom 10p.m.to2a.m.Thehallwasliterallypacked.FatherO'Neilandhis energeticcommitteehaveeveryreason forbeinggratifiedwiththeresult.
