Toexpectpoliticianstobeconsistent,logical,andprofoundwouldnowa-daysshowanutterlackoffamiliaritywiththecausesandthemotives whichregulatetheconductelthose entrustedwiththestewardshipofthe publicweal. Justiceandfair-play maybeexcellentpartywatch-words, antishibbolethsatper-election speeches,butinrealitytheirinfluence onpracticalpoliticsisinfinitesimal. WhenthepresentMooreGovernment declareditsintentionofspending Statemoneyontheestablishmentof asecondaryschool,itsimplyforetolditsintentionofgivingmoney wrungfromthepooroftheStatetowardstheeducationofthewealthy. ThatiswhataState-endowedsecondaryschoolmeans.TheLabour Partyaretheconstituted-whetherby themselvesorothers,whetherjustly orunjustly,doesnotnowmatter-defendersoftherightsofthelaborers, whointhiscountryarepractically thepoor,thosewhosetoilcanwin themthemerenecessariesoflife.But intheeducationquestiontheLabour Partydoesnotupholdtherightsor theinterestsofthelabouringman. ThelabourcriticismoftheGovernmentpolicyforthepresentsession hasbeen,accordingtoalljudges, weak,intangible,andsuperficial.The announcement.thattheMooreMinistryweretoinitiateapolicyofspendinghugesumsonsecondaryeducation atatimewhenthatworkisbeing undoubtedlywellclonebyexisting schools,andatatimewhenthereis nopublic'demandforsuchadepar-' ture,andwhentheStatefinances areinaprecariouscondition,gavethe leaderoftheOppositiononestrong plankatleast,fromwhichtoassail theGovernment.No! TheGovernmentpolicy,strangetosay,isthe LabourParty'spolicyinthismatter, thoughtheinjusticeofitisquiteevident.Forthelabouringman'schild willnotbenefitbythesecondary school. Hewillhavetoleave schoolattheearliestmomentthelaw allows.Hisparentsasaruleare unabletosupporthiminidleness, andhisassistanceandco-operation towardsthemaintenanceofthefamilyisrequiredandinsistedon.

Afteraheartygood-byefromthe GeraldtonConventtheSistersaccompaniedbyhisLordship,returnedto thesteamer,andcomfortedbythe Bishop'sblessing,theycontinuedthe journeytotheNorthernports.From Geraldtonthetripwasmorepleasant,theseabeingverysmoothand theweatherfavorable.Nowday afterdaypassedverynicely,andafter thedailyofficeandcommunityprayerstheSistersoccupiedthemselves withfancyneedleworkwiththepurposeofhavingafewlittlepresentsreadyforthedearlittlechildren,whosecaretheyweregoingto undertake. Officersandpassengers wereallverykindtothem,esteeminghighlytheirspiritofloveand sacrificewhichenabledthemtoselectfortheirportionalifeofdangerandhardshipintheNorth-West.
AtCarnarvon,Rev.FatherCreagh welcomedtheSistersandafewmiles driveina"fnnnylittletram"brought themtotheConvent,givingthem ampletimetoadmiresand,scrub, andthecreeksofthesurrounding country.ThenunsofCarnarvonwel'cornedourSisters,consideringtheir visitasablessingfromheavento theirConvent.Theyonly^eceive veryfewvisitsfromoutsiders,and aremoreoverleftwithouttheconsolationofapriestformanymonths. ThankstoBishopKelly'sindefatigablezealtheNorth-Westerncoast willinthenearfuturebemorefrequentlyattendedbyapriest.But everybodyhastoadmirethenunsof rarnarvonfortheirexcellentspirit, bayingdonesplendidworkforGod's andourcountry'shonorandglory undergreatprivations.
OurSistersrejoicedverymuchin thehopeofassistingatMassinthe morning,butreceivedamessagefiom thesteamerannouncedthatitseepaeturewouldtakeplacebeforemid- ,Alight. Theyhad,therefore,toresignthemselvestotheHolywillof God.AfterashortvisittoTesus intheHolySacramentandasincere recommendationtoeachotherspray- ers,the"funnylittletram"transportedourSistershacktothe steamer.ThenunsofCarnarvon,as inGeraldton,wouldhavelikedto keepafewofourSistersbackto helpthemintheirwork,whichisin proportiontotheirnumberstoo great.ButtheBeagleBaySisters
weretoostrongintheirvocationfor moresacrificingworkamongstthe neglectedaborigines. Hence,with sincerestfeelingofsympathyforthe greatworkoftheircompanions,our Sistersresumedtheirjourneynorthward.
TheSundaywe.passedinPortlied- land,where kindnesstheSisters,throughthe oftheproprietor(O'Connor) oftheEsplanadeHotel,foundanice roomforprayersandservice.l'ort Hedlandpeoplewereanxioustokeep afewSistersfortheirchildren,and offeredthemahouseandschool,and promisedthemeveryhelpfortheir support.Butallinvain. AtBroomeThes.s.Bullarraar- rivedatnoon,andleftagaineo113,in themorningforBeagleBay.Iother VerlinwelcomedtheSistersatthe steamer.Intheevening:heSisters attendeddevotionsinthen;reI:tile church. A.formalreceptionbythe CatholicladiesofBroomedidnot comeoff,becausenobodyexpectedthe s.s.Bullarraalongsidethejetty,the tidebeingverylow.ButCaptain ReesknowstheNorth-Westernwaters toowellandsucceededinwhatmany otherswouldnothaveundertaken.
At11nextmorningwesightedBea- gleBayandtheMissionlugger"Pio" twomilesfromtheBayatanchor. Thesteamerwentalongside,andFr. ThomaswithafewoftheBrothers cameonboardtowelcometheSisterstotheirnewsphereofwork. Theboxes,containingmostlyclothes andschoolimplementsforthenatives, weretakenonboardtheluggerdur- inglunchtime.Wheneverything)was inreadiness,theSisterssaidgood- byetoallonboardthesteamerand thankedthecaptainheartilyforhis kindnessinbringingthemtoBeagle Bay.WhentheSistershadtaken theirplaces,toomuchroomdidnot remainonthelugger.CaptainRees gavetheSistersaheartysend-off,in whichalltheremainingpassengers joined.Thesewereindeedverytouchingmoments.Soonthes.s.Bullarra wasundersteam,andthe"Pio"had sailedintheoppositedirection,anti steamerandluggerwerelostsightof toeachother.Thesteamerwent roundthepointwhilsttheluggerwassteeredintotheBay.Thelast twodayshadbeenverypleasanton thes.s.Bullarra,butnowsovery neartotheendoftheirlongjourney theSistersweretoexperiencealittle ofthehardlifetravellinginalugger intheNorth-West.Wehadnotmore thanfiveorsixmilestogointhe Baytothelandingplace.Tideand windwereagainstus,althoughwe gainedwithhoursafewmiles,nevertheless,welostthisagaininthe evening.Thenwetriedtogetashore intwosmallboats.hutwithoutsuccess.Willingornotwilling,wehad topassthenightonhoard,although wecouldseethechildrenantinatives onshore,whowereanxioustosee theSisterssafelylanded.Therestingplaceondeckchairsandboxes wasnottoocomfortablefortheSisters,buttheyboreitverybrave- ly,andgaveevidencethattheyall werefitforthestillharderandmore sacrificinglifeawaitingthemintheir newconventatBeagleBayMission. Therisingsunthenextmorning foundallthepassengersinbestspi- ritsandthe'battlingagainstwindand wavestartedanew.Itseemedthat
theSisters.ratherRusseladdressed them,welcomingthemallonbehalf ofthechildrenandwomenoftheMis- sion,amongstwhom,hesaid,they wouldfindawell-preparedfieldfor theirworkofloveandcharity. Thankingthemfortheirnobleenter- prisehewishedtheSisterseverysuccessandblessingfromheaven.Atthestorehouseafewrefreshmentsweretaken,and,havingpassed apleasanthalf-hourwiththeirnew charges,thegreatfour-wheeler,de- coratedfortheoccasion,anddrawn by10whitebullockswasinreadiness.AtthegatesoftheMission theSisterswerereceivedwithdue formality.Inprocessionthepriests, theBrothers,andmanyofthena- tivesmovedfromthechurch,chant- ingtheMagnificattomeetthenew corners. FatherBischofswelcomed themonbehalfoftheMission.Offer- inghisthanksfortheircominghe pointedoutthatthecomingofthe SisterstotheMissionhadbeenfor yearsanimportantquestionofthe utmostnecessity.Thereforehewas verygladthatfinallyabodyofen- terprisingnunshadbeenfoundto undertakethedifficultwork."Iam fullyconvinced,hesaid,totheSis- ters,thatGod'sholyprovidencehas sentyouintherightmoment,and withtheco-operationofyourwork, yourprayers,.yourcharity,Ifeelsure theMission'sworkwillbeinthenear futureagreatandsuccessfulunder- takingforthebenefit,thewelfareof thepoorabandoned,andunjustlyde- seisedaborigines.MaytheLordin Hisinfinitegoodnessblessyoualland giveyouallsupportandhelpfrom heavenforthedifficultandself-sacrificingtaskofyournoblevocation.
TheProcessionthenreturnedtothe churchforSolemn13enedictionand theTeDeuminthanksgivingtoGod concludedthemostimpressiveceremonytheMissionhadwitnessed sincehisLordship,BishopGibney'sarrivaltotheseforlornpartsofthe North-West,bringingtothenatives thegoodtidingsofcharityandreligion.AfterserviceFatherBischofs handedthenewConventovertothe Sisters,whereheintroducedtothem theMissionstaffandtheguestswho happenedtobeattheMission, amongstwhomwereMr.0.Bell,Mr. Calder,andMr.Knupp,fromFre- mantle.
Theeveningbroughtthenewandold inhabitantstogetherinthebigdining hall,tastefullydecoratedwithpalms andflagsfortheoccasion.Every- bodyadmiredtheablequalitiesofthe childrenclearlydemonstratedinthe musicalentertainmentgivenbythem inhonoroftheSisters'arrival. A fewspeechesweredelivered,andatthe endRev.MotherAntoniooffered heartythanksonbehelfofalltheSisterstoFathers,Brothers,guests, andnativesforthesympathyand kindnessoftheirwelcometotheMis- sion.Thenextdaybeingthefeast oftheSacredHeart,theBlessedSacramentremainedexposedthewhole day,andmanyferventprayerswere senttoheaventoimploretheLord's blessingontheMission,andespecially onthe,newworkoftheSistersofSt. JohnofGodinBeagleBay.
LetterstoHisLordshipC' allthedevilsofthedarkwereworkingagainstuswiththeintentionof Dr.Gibney. impedingtheSistersfromtheirmissionaryundertaking.Butatlast, withGod'shelp,wesucceededinlanding,afterhavingdonein26hours thatwhichatothertimesisdonein lessthantwo.Sotheworkofthe Sisterswassignedwiththecrossin thebeginning,andhappythereforetheyare,becausetheyknowonlytoo well,thatinsuchanenterprisebe- neaththecrossofTesusChristthere arehiddentheeternalgemsofbless- ingfromthegoodGodinheaven.

Alteraverypleasantvoyage,relievedbyunexpectedkindnessandcordialityateachofthenumerousports fromk'seinitntletoBroome,wearrivedinBeagleBuyat1o'clockon Tuesday,4thJune,andweremetby a"lugger,"inwhichweretwoBrothersandFatherWickwire. When leavingtheboat,officers,oldfellows, andyoung,too,gaveusanamusing send-off;oneinparticularmadesuch aspeechtoRev.MotherAntonia, andtoldherthatitwasthemostenjoyabletripheeverhadfurthermore, thathewouldeverlookbacktothe happinessandhonorofshakinghands withher.
Wegottothelandingplaceby twilight,butstayedinthe"lugger" onthewatersallnight,asitwould beimpossibletogooutatthattime. Fourhoursbroughtustooureagerly-looked-fordestination.The"horsemen"and"sulkies"gothomelong beforeus.Wewillnoteasilyforget that"twilightscene"-bellstolled, gunsfired,boyscheered,andnice whitehousesloomedupamongstthe trees.Aboutfortyperchesfromthe entrance,weweremetbyFatherBischofsandalongprocessionsinging "Welcome."Herehegaveushis blessingwherewemet,andsaidvery niceandappropriatethingsthenwe allwentinprocession(singing)tothe Oratory,wherewehadaverySolemn Benediction.TheBrotherssang,and thechildrenjoinedthem.TheTe Deum"wassung,andyoumightjust fancyyouwerefloatinguptoHeaven.WewenttotheConventwhere allstoodindoublefileandcheeredfor usaswepassedthrough.Asalute wasthentired,androcketsresounded intheair.Thewholeplacewasdecoratedfortheoccasion. Allsat downtodinnertogetherinabigrefractory,whichwouldseataboutone hundred.Afterdinnerwasoverthey gaveusamostbeautifulmusicalentertainment.TheConventisaorestoreybuildingwithverandahsall around.Eachhasaseparateroom, whichisspacious,lofty.andvery comfortable. Itwashewhobroughttothiscolonyagreatmanyofhiscountrymen, forinstance,JudgeMoorhead,and otherswhorosetopositionsofgreat trustandhonorintheStatesubsequently.Tohimagreatmanyof themareindebtedforanopportunity ofmakingapositionandfortunefor themselvesintheGoldenWest.The deceasedhadnotcomplainedoffeeling unwell,andwhen,heretiredtoreston Sundaynightwasinhisusualspirits.Atanearlyhourinthemorning,however,hewastakenill,and thoughmedicalattentionwaspromptlytohand,nothingcouldbedone, andhesuccumbedtoheartaffection.
