CORK.-Theninthannualexhibition undertheauspicesoftheCo.Cork IndustrialAssociation,wasopenedin CorkAssemblyRoomsonThersday, April18,byLordBandon.Therepresentationofschoolsthisyearis muchimprovedallround.Theprimaryandintermediateschoolsrepresentednumber,100.asagainst86last year,showinganincreaseof14,.while conventschoolsthisyearexhibitring number26,as.against16in1906. showinganincreaseintheexhibitsof industrialclasses,thenumberbeingin 190717,and190610.Thus,althoughthetotalnumberofentries thisyearshowsadecreaseof34,as comparedwithlastyear,thisyear's exhibitionisfarmorethangratifying thanwasanticipated,consideringthe earlydateatwhichitisheld,and thatthecomparisonismadewitha yearwhichisarecordone.Avery pleasingfeaturethisyeartooisthat thejudgeswereinapositiontosay thatthemeritsoftheexhibitshad undoubtedlyincreased. Withtheadventofspring-likeweatheremigrationhassetinagainatan alarmingrate(saystheIrishcorn,sporudentofthe"CatholicTimes.")The seasonatwhichIreland,clothedin verdantgreen,looksherverybestis thatinwhichshesuffersmostfrom theterribledrainbywhichherpopu- lationhasdwindledtohalfitsformer dimensions.FromQueenstownalone lastweeksomethousandsofmenand womenintheprimeoflifesailedfor America,andmanymorewereunable toproceeduntillateron,owingto lackofaccommodationontheliners.

Dr.Browne,BishopofCloyne,witnessedthesadsceneoftendersladen withyoungemigrantsdepartingfor theAtlanticlinerswhichlayashort distancefromtheshore.HisEminencepaidavisittotheTeutonicas Ishelayintheharbour,andinterview-

He mentionedthatinthecaseofthe WexfordCounciloutofsixmembers co-optedfourwereProtestants.They found,byexperience,however,that theyreceivedlittleencouragementin theco-optionofUnionists,inasmuch aswhenthey'co-opteditwasfound that.theywereirregularintheirattendance.Mir.ThomasPower(Water- ford)secondedtheresolution,andsaid thismattershouldbetakenupbyall thepublicbodiesofthecountry,and bytheIrishParliamentaryParty, withaviewtorepellingtheattacks thathadbeenmadebyMr.Balfour.

Mr.Dowling(Westmeath)saidthat asfarashiscountrywasconcerned they.hadnothingtofearfromaninquiryintotheconsiderationsaffecting electionseithertohonoraryofficesor topositionsofemolumentonother publicboands.Hecouldhaveproducedstatisticswhichwouldshow hisCountyCouncileveninamore favourablelightinthewayofliberalitythanWexford(hear,hear).

Mr.McKenna(Cavan)pointedout thatMr.Balfourseemedtohavechangedhismindonthesubject,forthe lateGovernmentwheninofficehad testifiedtotheefficientmannerin whichtheIrishpublicbodieswereconductingtheiraffairs.Electionsto publicbodieswereconductedsolelyon politicallinesinEnglandandScotland.Itwasnotsohere.

Dr.O'RyansaidthatheonlydifferedinonethingfromMr.Ennis, andthatwasinbeingatallsurprised atMr.Balfourmakingtheabsurd statementhehadcommittedhimself to. Theresolutionwascarried.

TheNationalexecutiveoftheIrish NationalCouncilhasresolvedthatthe AdministrativeCouncil(Dublin)Bill isaninsulttotheIrishnation.The executivecallsupontheIrishmemberstowithdrawfromParliamentand returntoDublintoformanAssembly, whichwillclaimrepresentationatthe corningpeaceConferenceatatheHague, withtheobjectofpressingforthe settlementbyanInternationalCourt ofArbitrationofthedisputebetween IrelandandEngland.

TheexecutiveoftheNorthDublin branchoftheIrishLeaguehavepassedaresolutionthattheAdministrativeCouncil(Dublin)Bill,introduced bytheGovernment,is'absurdlyinadequate,andinsultinglyhostiletothe nationalaspirationsoftheIrishrace. TheRightRev.E.O'Dwyer,CatholicBishopofLimerick,describlisthe measureasanattackonthereligious schools.TheCatholicBishopofKildare(Dr.Foley)alsoopposesthe measure,onthegroundthattheclergyareineligibleforseatsonthe Council.

TheNationalConventionoftheUnitedIrishLeagueinDublinyesterday discussedtheAdministrativeCouncil .(Dublin)Bill,whichwasintroduced intheHouseofCommonsrecentlyby Mr.AugustineBirrell,ChiefSecretary forIreland.

Mr.JohnRedmond,leaderofthe IrishParliamentaryParty,whopresided,submittedaresolutionrejecting theBillandurgingtheNationalist membersoftheHouseofCommonsto pressfor,theestablishmentofanative Parliament,witharesponsibleexecutive:suchParliamenttohavepower overallpurelyIrishaffairs.

Theresolution,wasunanimouslyand enthusiasticallyadopted.

Mr.Redmonddeclaredthathedid notsee-'thisunworkableBill"inits entiretyuntilthemeasurewasprinted.Badasitwas,itwasnotsoutterlybadasLordDunraven'sscheme. TheLiberalsmust.however.atonce andforallabandontheRosberyite ideaofsettlingtheIrishquestion.He describedtheI3illasutterlyinadequateinscopeandunsatisfactoryin details.HealsorepudiatedanyattemptstosettletheIrishproblem byhalfmeasures.Mr.Redmondjustifiedhisrecent.attitudeontheground thathewasawarethatinthisParliamenttheycouldnotgetapure HomeRuleBill.Hencehehadpromisedthatwhateverscheme,shortof thatadvance,wasproposedwouldbe consideredcalmlyonitsmerits.

"You,"continuedMr.Redmond."are themasterswithreferencetothisBill. If,asIfeelitwilldo,itprovesunworkable,itsfailurewillbeusedasan argumentagainstIrishmen'scapacity forself-government.TheLiberalsmust reverttoMr.Gladstone'sstandard. Peoelesometimestalkaboutwhatis calledanalliancebetweentheIrish andLiberalparties.Ourpartyis independent.Itisinalliancewith noEnglishpartywhichfailstoputa fullHomeRuleBillonthefront of itsprogramme. Irelandisstrong enoughifshechoosestocompelan earlysettlement."

Continuing,Mr.Redmondappealed forunityinorderthatIrishmen mightshowthattheywereresolved toachievetheirrights.Itwouldbe bettertowaitforagenerationthan toacceptameasureleadingtoddisasteranddisgrace.

Mr.O'Callaghan,nationalsecretary oftheUnited,IrishLeagueinAmerica,saidthatthedecisionoftheCOXventionwouldbethedecisionofthe IrishpeopleinAmerica.They in Americawouldcheerandencourage themiftheIrishsentimentwereonce againdrivenintoopenhostile.activity againstEnglandandtheEnglishGovernment.Mr.Bryce'staskasBritishAmbassadoratWashingtonwould notbefacilitatedasaresultofthis miserableBill.

Mr.FrankConnor,M.L.C.,ofWesternAustralia,declaredthattheenthusiasmforthecauseofIreland shownattheConventionwasrivalled, ifnotexcelled,bythepeopleofthe federatedStatesofAustralia.

Mr.T.P.O'Connor,M.P.,Mr.JosephDevlin,M.P.,andothersurged astrongermidmoreunitedmovement inthefuture. TheconventioninstructedtheIrish ParliamentaryPartytopresstheimmediatelegislationonthelinesofMr. Bryee'sUniversityscheme,andalso foranAmendedLandBillandfora Billprovidingforthecompulsoryreinstatementofevictedtenants.

OnSunday,May5th,theCatholics ofCalcuttamadeasplendiddemons strationagainsttheFrenchGovernment'spersecutionoftheChurch.It wasthelargestgatheringofCatholics everwitnessedinCalcutta.Fully 6,000peopletookpart.TheArchbishopofCalcuttapresided,andthe SuffraganBishopsandmanypriests werepresent,andalltheleadingCatholicsofCalcutta.Telegramsof sympathyandapprovalpouredinupon theArchbishopfromallpartsofIndia.TheArchbishopmadethespeech oftheoccasion,whichwasabrilliant vindicationoftherightofCatholics allovertheworldtoprotestagainst thecruelandbarborouscrimescommittedagainsttheirfellow-Catholics ofFrance. #

The"MadrasMail"saysthatafter aresidenceofoversixty-twoyearsin thatcountry,hisGracetheMostRev. Dr.J.Colgan,ArchbishopofMadras, hasbeencompelledbyfailinghealth torelinquishhishighofficeandretire fromthefieldoflabourwhichheloves sowell.HisGracewasborninthe CountyofWestmeath,onthe1stof April,1824,andwasstillinhisteens whenhearrivedinIndiaHewasordainedpriestinSt.Mary'sCathedral,Armenian-street,Madras,onthe 5thOctober,1846,atwhichtime therewasonlyoneBishopandthirteenprieststoministertothespiritualwantsoftheCatholicsintheVicariateofMadras.Nowtherearein theVicariateoneArchbishopandthree Bishops,andthenumberofpriestshas solargelyincreasedandtheCatholic communityhasgrownsoenormously thatitmustbesatisfactorytothe Archbishoptocontemplatethework achieved(luringhislongtenureef office,andtorealisewhatalarge sharehehashimselftokeninit.

Thesocialcommitteehandedintheir reportoftherecentconcert.Itis expectedthatafairsumwillbe,obtained.Thecommitteesuegestedthat theSocietyshouldrunanotherdance onJune12th.Amotiontothiseffectwasputandcarriedunanimously. Thesecretarywasinstructedtoobtainasearlyaspossibleanumberof badgesfortheSocietyformembersto wearonspecialoccasions.
