PatnaMauriceCountdeMacMahon andDukeofMagenta,whowasborn onJune13,1808,attheCastleof Sully,inFrance,belongedtothe ClareMacMahons,oneofthemost ancientfamiliesinIreland,theirancestorshavingbeentheO'Briens, KingsofMunster,oftheraceofHeber,says-TheIrishWorld." TheMarshal'sgrandfather.John BaptistMacMahon,wasanativeof Limerick,wherehewashornin1715. In 1R4SMacMahonwasmadeGeneralofBrigadeandobtainedcommand oftheprovinceofOran.In1852he wasappointedtothemilitarygovernmentofConstantineandwaspromotedtotherankofGeneralofDivision.WhentheCrimeanwarbroke out,GeneralMacMahonwasatfirst appointedtotheFirstCorpsofthe ArmyoftheNorth.Theplaitofcampaignbeingchanged.however,the GeneralwassenttotheCrimeainthe middleof1855.MacMahonarrived justintimeforglory.GeneralPelissierwaspreparingforthefinal assault.Hegavethemostdifficult task-thestorming.capture,anhretentionoftheMalakoff-tothefresh troopswhichMacMahonbrought. "Countuponus,General,"saidthe latterandhisofficerswhentheplan wasunfoldedtothem.Whenthemomentcame(Sept.8th,1855).thekey ofSevastopolfelltotheirirresistible rushandwaspreservedtothembythe etcoolresourcesofMacMahon,forthe firstassaultwashutthebeginningof thefight.
Theassailantshadnosoonerbecome possessedofthepositionthantheyhad toarrangeforitsdefence.Againand againtheRussiansreturnedtoregain, iftheycould,thelostposition.Itv,as duetotheadmirabledispositionofhis forces.madeonthespotandunderfire byMacMahon,thattheprizewas saved.Hisarrangementswereso completethathehadsettledwithhis secondincommandwhatwastobe doneincaseMacMahonandhissecond brigadewereblownup. Thepossibilitywasnotremote.Fortythousandkilogramsofpowderbad beenplacedinpositionandelectric connectionsestablished.MacMahen's engineerlostnotamomentindiscoveringthelatterandseveringthem. MacMahonhaderippedtheMalakoff andwouldnotloosehishold.The capturemadethedefenceofSevastopol impossible,and.thoughtheEnglish hadfailedtoestablishthemselvesundertheterriblefirethatsweptthe Redan,theRussiansfiredthetown whennighthadfallenandleftthe ruinstotheirfoes.MiacMahonreceivedforhisexploittheGrandCross oftheLegionofHonor.wasnamed SenatorofFranceandappointedto thecommandofthereserves.
InSeptember,1858,MacMahonwas appointedCommander-in-Chiefofall thelandandseaforcesinAlgiers. ShortlyafterthisthewarwithAustriabrokeout.Earlyin1859MacMahonwenttoItaly.OnJune3, commandingtheSecondCorpsofthe FrenchArmy,heroutedtheAustrian corpsatRocchetta,andonthefollowingdaywonthefamousbattleof Magenta,whichgavetheIrishhero hisDukedom. TheEmperorNapoleonIII.andtheKingofSardinia, with55,000men,werestoutlyopposedby75,000Austrians,butforthe timelyarrivalonthefieldofGeneral MacMahontheallieswouldhavebeen disastrouslydefeated.' Forthis splendidvictoryMacMahonwascreatedMarshal.Twentydaysafterthe battleofMagentatheFrenchandSate diniansgainedanothersignalvictory overtheAustrians,whiohwasachievedmainlybytheskillandbraveryof MacMahonandanothergallantIrish General,Neil.Thisendedthewar. AfterthecloseoftheFranco-Prussianwarandthere-establishmentof orderinParisbycrushingtheCommune.MarshalMacMahonwasoffered thepresidencyoftheRepublic,which hefinallyaccepted.
