ThePressAssociationstatesthat Mr.DonalSullivan,M.P.,forSouth Westmeath.diedathisLondonresidenceat3.30ontheafternoonofSunday,March3.Thehon.gentleman wasinattendanceattheHouseof CommonsonthepreviousMonday, whenhehadanattackofheartfailure.whichhasbeenrecurrentduring theweek. Mr.Sullivan,whoreereseatedSouthWestmeathsince1885, asaNationalist,hasnothadtocontesthisseatsince1692.whenhe!fad amaiorityoverMr.CharlesO'Donogluie(Partselete)of1.455 thefiguresbeing-Sullivan.2.535O'Donoghue,1.080.
TrinityCollegeinArms.-Thefavouredpeoplewhoenjoyamonopolyof highereducationinthecountryare fightinghardtodiscredittheproposed settlement.Theargumentsoftheir spokesmen,however,canimpressno impartialperson. Soweakistheir causethattheyareforcedtohave recoursetomostchildishassertions. HisGracetheArchbishopofDublin forinstancehavingcorneredProfessor Culverwellovertheallegednon-sectarianismofDublinUniversity,the latterrepliesbytellinghisGraceto establisha"DublinUniversityCatholicMissiontoChatoaNagpurcorrespondingwiththeProtestantSociety whichbearstheimprimatu.irofTrinity."Nothingcouldbemoreridiculousthanthissuggestioninconnectionwithsoseriousamatter.
Anewdevelopmentofthecampaign ofslanderinwhichtheUlsterUnionistmembersaresoindustriosslyengagedwasIdiscoveredMarch4.Some UlsterUnionistshavetakentoputtingdownquestionsinthenameof EnglishTorieswithoutgettingtheir consent. ANationalistmember, speakingtoanEnglishToryinwhose nameaquestionoftheusualkindappearedonthepaper,expressedsurprisethathewouldlendhimselfto suchacontemptiblebusiness. Onhearingofhissubmissiontothe CatholicChurch,Dr.Messmer,the CatholicBishopofGreenBay,wrote toexpresshisdoubtsofM.Vilatte's sincerity."'Thereis,"hesaid,"certainlyverystrongreasontodoubtit inviewofhisfiveconversionsandas manyrelapses.''Theauthoritiesin Romewerewiselyslowinadmitting himtocommunion.Atallevents theyprovedtooacuteforM.Vilatte, andhereturnedtoAmerica,andtook uphisoldworkinWisconsin.There hespenthistimeinbusilywaging warwiththeSchismaticPolishBishopsontheonehand,andtheAnglicanBishopofFondduLac,uponthe other.Inthemidstofthiscombat, theexploitsofM.desHouxandhis schismaticassociationscultuellesand thenew"NationalChurch"createda situationinFrance,whichwouldnot bereallycompletewithoutthepresidingpresenceofM.Vilatte.
6.-TheLadyandtheLoan.
Therestofthestoryistobefound intheParisianpapers,andthe"end ofthecomedy"maybereadinthe "LibreParoleofTuesdaylast.
UndertheauspicesofM.desHouxa so-calledassociationcultuellewas formedinacertainpartofParis,and theGovernmentofM.Clemenceau handedovertoitthepossessionofa well-knownCatholicchapel.Asuspendedpriestwasinducedtoundertakethechargeoftheschismaticcongregation. M.Vilattewasbrought overtoordainclergyforthenew schism. Hisattempttocelebrate HighMassthereandtoholdanordinationamidscenesofriotingand publicderisionarefreshinthememoryofParisians.Thefiascoculminatedlastweekinasomewhatdramaticepisode.
withawagaswellasanadventurer, andshewascontenttowriteoffthe sumasabaddebt.

ApparentlyM.Vilattehadforgotten thewholeincidentwhenheconfidently returnedtoParis.Theladyhadreasontohaveabettermemory,andon learningthatM.Vilattewasbackin Paris,andwithinreachofFrenchlaw, shepromptlycalledattherueLepadre,wheretheso-calledArchbishopwasinthemidstofhisnewactivities.Onbeingtaxedwithhis debt,M.Vilatteatfirstaffectedinnooentsurprise,andthenrighteousindignation. Heremindedhisaccusers thathewasanAmericancitizen,and appealedtotheprotectionofthe AmericanAmbassador.Hedenounced theladyasguiltyofashamelessattempttoblackmailhim. However, theFrenchpolicearenoteasilybluffed andwithoutfurtheradotheyproceededtomakeaseizureofM.Vilatte's furniture.Heprotestedthatallthe furniturebelongedtotheassociation cultuelle.Whilelisteningtothisplea, thePoliceAgentwasgraduallygettingnearerandnearertoacertain cupboard,whichhefinallyopened,and 'discoveredthearchiepiscopalcrosier andmitre.Theseheseizeddespite thepiteousprotestsofM.-desHoux, whonaturallyfeelsthataftersucha scenethenewschismisneverlikely tosurvivethelaughteroftheParisians.Soclosesthelastactofthe drama.Itisnotveryarchiepiscopal, hutontheotherhanditisveryVitalle.
Itseemsthatthisisthesecond visitofM.VilatteasanArchbishop toParis.In1900hetookuphis residenceinahouseintherueBoulevardPerreire,andfurnishedaroom asachapel.Beingwithoutfunds, hebetookhimselftoacertaincountry priest-sincethensuspended-andtogethertheysucceededinwinningthe confidenceofacertainlady,who,on beingassuredthatVilattewasabishopincommunionwithRome,advancedhimasumof3,000frs.,to foundanallegedworkofcharityin Paris.Thelady,learningsoonafter thatVilattewasanadventurer,excommunicatedbyRome,hastenedto Paristoreclaimhermoney.She wastoolate.M.Vilattehadtaken hisdepartureforChicago.Hersolicitorwrotethreateningproceedings. ThefinalmeetingoftheSt.Pats' rick'sDaySportscommitteewasheld attheFreemasons'HotelonThursdayevening,theRev.FatherHallinanbeinginthechair.TheMayor (Mr.A.Myers)wasalsopresent.The balance-sheetshowedaverysatisfactorystateofaffairs.Thereceipts were£8014s9d,andtheexpenditure £4515s11:kl,leavingacredit-balance of£348slid.Thiswas£6better thanthepreviousyear.
Allaccountswerepassedforpayment,andprizemoneywonatthe sportsisnowpayableonapplication tothesecretary(Mr.,J.O'Sullivan). TheMayor(Mr.Myers)congratulatedFatherHallinanandthecommitteeonthesuccessfuloutcomeofthe sports.FatherHallinansaidhewishedto thankallthosewhohadhelpedsowell tomakethesportsasuccess,firstand foremostamongstwhomwasthesecretary(Mr.O'Sullivan).Thenthere weretheladies,whohad'helpedina wonderfulway. Allwereofsuch greatmeritthatitwouldbeinvidious tosingleoutanyforspecialmention. TherewasalsotheMayor,whohad assistedinthecollectionwhichwas thebesttheyhadyethadinaidof thesports.Thereceiptsinconnectionwiththecelebrationswereexceedinglysatisfactory,andtheycould lookforwardtostillbetterresults. Thenamongthose whodoreadit,therearisesdifficulty ininterpretingitsmeaningandteach- ingandtherearemanydifferencesof opinionamongthemastothetrue meaningofcountlesspassages.Moreover.theyareoftenmisledbytheirpre- conceivedideas,orbiassedbytheftpre- judices.Neithercanmenbesureasto thesupposedmovementofthe'Holy Ghost,sincetheymaybedeceivedby theirownimaginationorotherhallucination.Noragaincanweadmit thatprivateinterpretationaffordsa surewaytorevealedtruth:for,aswe allknow,therewouldinsuchacase beaboutasmanyopinionsasthere areminds.Lastly,thewayofcriticalexaminationisneithersurenor universal; for,ifwehadtodepend uponsuchaway,veryfewpersons wouldarriveatthetruthsoffaith. Somethroughslownessofcomprehen- sionorinadequateeducation.and othersthroughworldlycaresandoccupations.wouldbehinderedfrom makingthenecessaryexaminationof thesubjectwhileothersagainwould diebeforecomingtotheageatwhich theywouldbecompetenttodothis, andtheywouldthereforepassaway withoutfaithinanyrevealeddoctrine.andwouldprobablybelost. Wemaynowaskhowthoseoutside theCatholicChurcharriveatwhat theyconsidertheyshouldbelieve.I speakofthemajorityofProtestant bodies.Theyacknowledgeonlyone ruleoffaith,namely,theBibleorthe HolyScriptures.Howdotheyarriveattheteachingcontainedtherein TheyadmitseveralmeansofunderstandingtheBibleforinstance, theirownreadingofit,theirownpri- vateinterpretationofit..thesupposed movementoftheHolyGhost,anda criticalexaminationofit.Butinall thistheyarenotinthesurewayof reaciiingthetruth.Letusseewhy. Theyarewrongattheoutset,because theydiscarddivinetradition,forrevealedtruthiscontainedindivinetraditionaswellasintheBible.St. Paulsaysinhissecondepistleofthe Thessalonians"Brethren,standfast, andholdthetraditionswhichyou havelearnedwhetherbywordorby ourepistle."Hetreatsthespoken wondcomingbytraditionasofequal valuewiththewrittenwordofhis epistle:forbothtraditionandthe BiblearethewordofGod-onethe unwrittenword.andtheotherthe writtenword.Anotherargumentin favouroftraditionisthefactthat thefirstchurcheswerefoundedwithouttheBible-atanyratewithoutthe NewTestament.andtheycontinued foryearstoexistwithoutit. The Churchhadexistedsixty-threeyears beforeSt.Johnwrotehisgospel.It wasthereforeonlybytraditionthat thosefirstgatheringsofthefaithful learnedthetruthsrevealed'byGod.TheyreceivedthemnotfromtheBible, butfromthelivingvoiceofthe Church.Wehave,moreover,totake intoaccountthatmanytruthspro- claimedbyourSaviourhavenotbeen giventousbytheBible.becausethey werenotwritteninit,St.John writesattheendofhisgospelthese wands:"Therearealsomanyother thingswhichJesusdid.which,iftheyWhatwewantisauthoritativeand werewritten,everyone.theworldit-reliableteaching..Wemaysaythat self.Ithink.wouldnotbeabletotalent,science,influence.andsocial containthehooksthatshouldbewritsstanding,ofthemselvesavailnothing ten."Fries,thissossseeoftheBibleinthismatter.Wehavetoacknow- itselfwelearnmostclearlythatitledgewithallCatholicsthattheonly doesnotpretendtocontainallthesureandreadyway.andtheoneopen truth;andwemustnotforgetthattoall,ofarrivingatthecertain whatremainedunwritten.wasreveal-knowledgeofrevealedtruths.istobe eddoctrine,andjustastrueaswhatfoundinaliving,infallible.andun- waswritten. Wheneveroneofoursexsaysor doesanythingparticularlyfoolish,the superiormanlookingoninvariablyexclaims-solikeawoman,"andIam afraidthatmanyofourselvesareonly tooapttoechohissentiment.To somemenitseemsquitenatural thatawomanshoulddoridiculous things,andquiteimpossiblethatshe shouldeverdoanythingparticularly clever.Theywilltellyouwithall sinceritythatwoman'ssphereisin thehome.implying,ofcourse,thatthe wholegreatworldoutsidethefour wallsofthehomeconstitutesthedomainofman.
Tothemtheideaofwomanknowing anythingbeyondsewingandwashing, andscrubbingandmending,withper- haps,aknowledgeoftheartoflookingprettyissimplypreposterous.
JoanofArcwhenshecameoutto leadtheFrenchtroopsandsaveher CountryfromtheEnglishinvaders,was curtlyaskedwhyshedidnotstayat homeandspinandwash.Shere- plied,thattherewereplentyathome todothat,andthatshecoulddobetterwhereshewars.
Theworldhasimprovedconsiderably sinceJoan'stime,butoldideasdie hard,andtherearestillmanymodernancientmenwhoclingtenaciously tothehometheoryforwoman.Didn't wehaveanexampleofthisquiterecentlywhenthisSocietywasstarted?
AprominentmemberoftheHighgate HillC.Y.M.S.askedindignantlywhy womencouldn'tmindtheirownbusinessandkeepoutofmen'ssphere. Man'ssphere,indeed Ilikethat! Why.evensewingandcookingappear tobeinhissphere.Wirth,thegreat Parisianleaderofmillineryfashions wasaman.althoughsomewhoplace gushalowvalueonwhattheyterm theweakersexwouldnodoubtcall himamasculineoldmaid.AndI understandthatmanyoftheleading cooksaremen.Tomymindthe greatmajorityofthosewholoftily maketheremarksreferredtoabove, knowpreciouslittleaboutwoman's sphere.andagreatdeallessabout man's.Thisignorance.Imustcon- fess.however,isnotconfinedwholly andsolelytoman.Verymanywomentakeitfor'grantedthattheir placeisathome-athomealways. nightandday.winterandsummer. withperiodicalvisitstochurchto pray.andtotownforthatallen- grossingoccupationofwoman-shop- ping.pleaseyou.Well!perhapsthose womenareright,sofarastheythem- selvesareconcerned;butwhyshould theysetthemselvesupasthestandard.andinsistonallothersconformingtotheirideals.
Therearesomewomenwhogoto theotherextreme.andclaimthatbecauseawomencandosomethings aswellasamancan,ehecando everythingaswell.
Onepartyarguesthatthesexesare totallydifferentineveryrespect,and theotherarguesthatthereisalmost nodifferencebetweenthem. Well Ithinktheyarebothwrong, verymuchwrongindeed.Listento whatJohnRuskinsaysaboutthetwo sexesinhisinterestinglittlebook "SesameandLilies."Wecannotde- terminesaysMr.Ruskin."whatthe queenlypowerofwomenshouldbeun- tilweareagreedwhattheirordinary powershouldbe. Wecannotconsider howeducationmayfitthemforanywidelyextendingduty.untilweare agreedwhat istheirconstantand trueduty.Therelationsofthewomanlytothemanly'metre.theirdifferentcapacitiesofintellectorof virtue.seemneveryettohavebeenestimatedwithentireconsent.Wehear ofthemissionandoftherightsof
Angelsarepaintedfairtolookilea you, There'sinyouallthatwerelieveof heavenAmazingbrightness,purityandtruth; EternalJoyandeverlastinglose.'
Thepicturemaybeslightlyoverdrawninsomeparticulars,butapart fromthosepardonabeexaggerations, isn'titbeautiful-andfaithful'?
womanasifthosecouldeverbesep- aratefromthemissionandtherights ofman,asifsheandherlordwere creaturesofindependentkind,andof irreconcilableclaim. Thisatleast iswrong.Andnotlesswrong-per- hapsevenmorefoolishlywrong-isthe ideathatwomanisonlytheshadow andattendantimageofherlord,owinghimathoughtlessandservileobedienceandsupportedaltogetherinher weaknessbythepre-eminenceofhis fortitude.This,Isay,isthemost foolishofalterrorsrespectingher whowasmadetobethehelpmateof man.Asifhecouldbehelpedeffectivelybyashadoworworthilybya slave."
ThenMr.Ruskinsearchestheworks ofthegreatwritersofallages,and givesthetestimonytheyhaveleft respectingwhattheyheldtobethe truedignityofwomanandhermode ofhelptoman.Iledeclaresthat Shakespearehasnoheroes-hehas onlyheroines-andthatthecatastropheofeveryoneofShakespeare's playsiscausedalwaysbythefolly orfaultofman.whiletheredemp- tiondftherebeany,isbythewisdomandvirtueofawoman.
Flowdoesthatfitinwiththewoman'sspheretheoryoftheyoungmen wholookuponusasintrudersontheir ownparticulardomain?
I'lladmitthatagreatdealofthe prejudiceagainsttheadvance.ofour sexistraditional,andthatthosewho echoitdosooutofignorance.But isn'titacrimetobeignorant,when therearesomanyopportunitiesof gaininginformation?
AsDr.Johnsonaskedinhis"Van- ityofHumanWishes""lnusthelplessman,inignorancesedate.
Rolldarklingdownthetorrentofhis fate?"
Thehistoryoftheworldteamswith thesplendidrecordofwomenwho didn'tstayathomeallthetime.Possiblytheirhomeswereascleanand asbright,andascomfortable,andas homelyasthoseofwomenwhoseldom wentbeyondthegatesoftheirown frontgardens-thoseofthemwhohad ant'.Indeed.itisquiteonthecards thattheirhomeswerebrighter,for theirviewsmusthavebeenenlarged bytheirgreatercontactwiththe world.andtheirtempers,andthose allaroundthemconsequenttyimproved. Themeremanmayallow, of course,withThomasMoore,thatwhen "tiredofthescienceofblisses,"we may"FlytotheMissesofscience."
Whenwehavegrownoldandworn. andsallow,anddyspepticandcrusty intheceaselessdrudgeryofwhatsome mencallhomeweetaycompete againstthelordsofcreation,inafew things.Thanksfornothing Farbeitfrommetoarguethata womanshouldneglectherhomemthe pursuitsofoutsideaffairs.Nosensiblewoman.Itakeit.wouldsuggest suchathing.Surely.though.the increaseinmentalandbodilyvigour. inknowledgeandrefinement,which well-regulatedsocietiesofwomenaim at.neednotimpairthehappinessof thehome.Indeed.isittoomuchto claimthatitsresultsshouldhea vastimprovementinthehomelife.
Womanisbynaturebrightand witty.OliverWendellHolmes,inhis "AutocratoftheBreakfastTable," makesoneofhiswomancharacters saytotheoppositesex-
"Whilemansdullspirittoilsin smokeandfire
Woman'sswiftinstinctthreadsthe electricwite, Allfoesyoumasterbutawoman's wit Letsdaylightthroughyouerevon knowyou'rehit.
ThomasOtwayin"VenicePreserved,"paysthefollowingadmirabletributetowoman:"0,womanlovelywoman! tanee madetheetotemperman Wehadbeenbruteswithoitvoi.

Toofrequentlywehaveitdrummed intoourheadsthatwomanisnotto guideoreventothinkforherself.The man,wearetold,isalwaystobe thewiser,tobethethinker,theruler, thesuperiorinknowledgeanddiscretion,asinpower.Ruskinasserts. andhisviewseemseminentlysane. "We(thatis,men),arefoolishand withoutexcuseinspeakingofthe superiorityofoursextotheother, at;iftheycouldbecomparedinsimilarthings.Eachhaswhattheother hasnoteachcompletestheother, andiscompletedbytheotherthey areinnothingalike,andthehappiness andperfectionofbothdetest'supon eachaskingandreceivingfromthe other.whattheothercanonlygive. OnthepoliticalsideofthisquestionIhadnotintendedtotouch.It isworthwhile,however,asareplyto thosewhoconstantlyassertthatthe grantingofthefranchisetowomen hasnotimprovedpoliticsinanyway, tolistentothetestimonyofMiss AliceHenryinanarticleentitled "TheAustralianWomanandtheBallot"inthe"NorthAmericanReview" forDecember31oflastyear."Any alterationintherelative,industrial, andeconomicstatusofmenandwomanwill,"saysMissHenry,"benecessarilyaslowprocess,butinthis connectionanoteworthyincidentwas therecentactionoftheFederalSenatorinintroducinganamendmentto thePublic'ServiceActtoequalisethe rateofpayformenandwomen,inthe FederalService.Thesignificanceof thisfactisnotthatsuchaproposal wasmade,butthatitemanatedfrom suchaquarter-notfromaneagersuffragist,butfromanaveragepolitician,whowasthusgivingthebest possibleproofthathewasdoingone ofthethingsforwhichhehadbeen sentintotheHouse.viz.,attendingto theinterestsofallhisconstituents, andacknowledginginanunconscious fashionthatheinpartowedhiselectiontowomen.itwashisdutyto seethathiselectorsweretreatedwith even-handedjustice.""Thepowerof thebestmeninthecommunityhas, addsMissHenryin re-enforcedandthehandsofconscientiouslegislatorsstrengthenedbythe additionofthewoman'svote."So mmliforourvote!
