Thefiftiethanniversaryofthedeath ofisatherMathewwascommemorated inAthloneon11thDecemberbya greatpublicdemonstration,underthe auspicesoftheFatherMathewClub. Thehallwasdenselycrowded.Right Rev.Dr.Kelly,DeanofElphin,who presided,inthecourseofanaddress, pointedoutthatatthepresenttime, sixtyyearsaftertheinaugurationof thetemperancemovementbyFather Mathew,theywereconfrontedwith thedishearteningfactthatperhead theconsumptionofalcoholicliquor wasmorethanitwasin1840,though forthepasttwoyearstherewasa slightdecrease.Ofallcausesleading toahighmortality,alcohol,hesaid, heldfirstplace. Theobjectofthelecturer'smissionto Australiashouldstillenlistthesympathiesoftheaudience.ThemissionarieswhomherepresentedlabouredforthemostpartinBritishAfricanterritoryorProtectorate,where theygavetheirlaboursandtheirLives notmerelyinthecauseofChristianity,hutalsoinfurtheringthework ofBritish-civilisation.
Wednesdayevening'slecturedealt firstwiththelandscapesceneryof modernEgypt,thelecturer'sdescriptionsbeingillustratedwith'beautifully coloredviewsofgrovesofdate-palms, reflectedinthebluewatersoftheNile andbrownplainsofbarrensandapproachingtheriver'shanks.ThemosquesandminaretsofEgyptiancities werenextdescribedandillustrated. therepresentations'beingofamost artisticcharacter.Thelecturersaid Matfromtheflatterracerooforthe seminaryofhisSocietyinCairohe couldcount550minarets.marking thesitesof550Moslemtemplesof worshipinthatvaststrongholdof Moslemism.withitspopulationof 700.000souls.NextfollowedadescriptionoftheblindMoslempriests Jimbingthespiralstairwaytothe summitsofallthoseminarets.and callingoutthehourofprayerasthe lastfragmentofthesun'sdiscdisappearedbehindthehorizononwhich pyramidsstand. Themostseriouspartofthisstatementisthatcontainedinthelastsentencerelativetothecaptureofyoung women.Itis,indeed,areflectionof soserious.anatureupontheconduct ofthepoliceinthelocalitythatit callsforaninstantandstringentinquirybytheGovernment.Dr.Klaatschisascientistofworld-widereputation,and,consequently,hisstatementsattherecentScienceCongress inAdelaidearelikelytobeprintedin, anddiscussedintheprincipalnewspapersoftheworld.ThisState, therefore,cannotaffordtoignorethe opinion%expressedbyDr.Klaatcsh bydoingsoitwouldbeonlytacitly acknowledgingtheiraccuracy,In anyinquiry,ofcourse,Dr.Klaatsch's presencewouldbenecessaryinorder thatitmaybeascertainedfromhim byverbalevidencethebasisupon whichhisremarkswerefoundedand asDr.Klaatschwasannouncedto leaveAdelaideonSaturdayfor AmericabySydney.itlooksasif theGovernmentintendtotake noactioninthematter.
