AUNANIMOUSIRISHPARTY.

Withoutregardtoparty,allthe103 membersforIrishconstituenciessignedMr.WilliamRedmond'smemorial totheGovernmenttowithdrawthe existingrestrictionswhichpreventthe growingoftobaccoinIreland.This isstatedtobetheonlycasesincethe Unioninwhichabsolutelyallthe Irishmembershaveunitedinsigning anydocument.

THETEMPERANCEMOVEMENT.

Thefiftiethanniversaryofthedeath ofisatherMathewwascommemorated inAthloneon11thDecemberbya greatpublicdemonstration,underthe auspicesoftheFatherMathewClub. Thehallwasdenselycrowded.Right Rev.Dr.Kelly,DeanofElphin,who presided,inthecourseofanaddress, pointedoutthatatthepresenttime, sixtyyearsaftertheinaugurationof thetemperancemovementbyFather Mathew,theywereconfrontedwith thedishearteningfactthatperhead theconsumptionofalcoholicliquor wasmorethanitwasin1840,though forthepasttwoyearstherewasa slightdecrease.Ofallcausesleading toahighmortality,alcohol,hesaid, heldfirstplace. Aresolutioninfavouroftotalabstinencewasproposed byFatherAloysius,Dublin.The campaign.hesaid,wasnotonly againstthedrinkquestion.butitwas alsoaliehtforbetterfood,better clothes,andbetterhouses,andinthe interestofthepeopletheymustfight thatfight,nomatterwhatindividual interestsuffered. Aresolutionin favourofearlyclosingandtheextensionofthebonafidelimittoseven mileswasadopted,ontheproposition ofVeryRev.DeanCampbell,seconded byRev.FatherKennedy,

Publicopinionwouldundoubtedlydriveitquicklyoutofexistence.Andyet,weinIreland,who knowthatitisso,andhavepointed itoutuntilwehavegrownwearyof enforcingthefacts,arestillpowerless denteoftaxation.Itwasadmittedtoremedytheevilthatisdailysappingourexistenceasapeopleanda in1888,1890,1891,and,lastly,itisnation.Thehomegovernmentof withinthememoryofmanyofusIrelandcostsperheadofthepopulathatEnglandclaimeda"separateentity,"whenshegaveherselfafinancialadvantageundertheAgriculturalRatingActthat,despitethe protestsoftheIrishmembers,shecrimeofthecountryisfaxbelowthat deniedtoIreland.Ihopetheforego-ofeitherEnglandorScotland.Our ingclearlyandsimplyprovesthatIre-elementaryeducationbillis£1,400,landhasbeen.andis,overtaxedtothe000only,andoursystemofeducetuneof21millionsyearly.ThepovertytionistheworstinEurope! Itis ofthecountryandtheyearlydrain byemigrationaredirectlytraceableto thiscause.Priorto1848emigration waspracticallyunknownamongstus. Upwardsoftenmillionsofmoneyis raisedinIrelandannuallybytaxation,andremittedtotheTreasuryin London. Outofthisamount71 millionsisyearlyhandedbackfor whatismostvaguelycalled"Irish services."Sothatitisevidentthat itcosts7kmillionssterlingtorun thiscountryfortwelvemonths,and despitethislavishexpenditurethepeoplearepoor,andthenaturalresourcesofthecountryatalowlevel.If thisstateofthingsbecontrastedwith whatisdoneinasmallcountrysuch asDenmarkwithapopulationofnearlythreemillionsweshallmoreclearlyunderstandwhatamarvelloussystemofgovernmentweliveand-perishunder.Denmarkpaysnearly-41 millionssterlingforalltheexpenses connectedwithherhomeandforeign possessions.
