Please help support 80 Indian Seminarians The Daltonganj Diocese in Bihar, India has appealed for funds to help support 80 Seminarians in various stages of their studies. These men come from extremely poor families who are unable to assist them. The Seminarians can't get casual work during their holidays, so the Diocese has to support them completely. Their expenses come to about $1 a day. These dedicated men are training to work in one of the poorest areas of India. The poverty there for five million people is so deplorable that few people living in affluent countries could possibly imagine it. Very few parishioners can afford to give even one cent to the Offertory collection. Most of the 17 parishes occupy areas exceeding 40 x 40 miles. Each parish has about 18 Mass centres, where Mass can only be said every 4, 6, or 8 weeks. Keeping the Faith alive under such circumstances is most difficult. The need for more priests and more parishes is one of the chief tasks of this Diocese. Whatever help you can give will be greatly appreciated. All donations are gratefully acknowledged by:

Record While admittedly he had precious little say in the matter, Leonhid Brezhnew could hardly have picked a more appropriate time to enter eternity or to be canonised in the Valhalla of his own rite. It would have been of little significance to him that Christians choose November to pray for the remission of the sins of their dead friends, or that the liturgy of the Church ponders the great final questions during its closing days of Pentecost. It would have meant even less to say that Brezhnew was dying in the shadow of the feast of Christ the King, a particularly Western addition to the calendar. It was proclaimed in 1925 as Pope Pius XI, well aware of the rumbles from young Brezhnew's Russia, pleaded for the restoration of Christ to the suburban and industrialised world which was slipping into its secular vacuum. How prophetic the pope was being at the time! Young Brezhnew was 18 at the time and being pumped full of the notion that any religion was superfluous to man's needs, while bureaucrats decided what to do with the requisitioned Russian churches. Yet no earthly faith would have dared turn on the religious spectacle that Red Square turned on when it was Brezhnew's turn to answer the question of mortality. Like some political god Brezhnew's frail body had been kept going for the past year by a medical entourage lest his death or resignation signal the end of the grey ghosts who now peered down from the Kremlin after his death, hanging on grimly to their own fading hopes for power. The monster portraits that are the hallmark of communism almost mocked the once famous Stalins and Maos whose glory has been whisked away by a desert wind. As the speeches rolled in, it was a celebration not of the man but of the nation, of the power it gives its few who climb perilously to the top, of its defence, of its warning to any potential rocking of its leaky boat which the same Brezhnew had criticised only recently. Rom Maione, former world head of YCW and union worker said this week that when the socialist leftists lose their mystical faith, the religion of the state, not the brotherhood of man, quickly becomes the substitute. Is there some strange chasm that now separates the aged ranks of communist leadership from the energetic men in their 30's and 40's who are emerging, for example, into Australian political life to find answers to questions? Indeed, for some, the greying ranks that surrounded a dead pope on two recent occasions could have seemed an equally perplexing study. The Kremlin funeral was a religious lesson because it proved that life depends on the point from where it is viewed, from the despair of materialism and atheism or the horizon of a new Advent to which Christ beckons us all.
