The Rome daily newspaper, "II Tempo", called the Polish government's action "the first time that a communist government had acceded to the desire of a p ope, changing as a c onsequence established programmes." Polish Catholics had feared the new highway would p revent pilgrims from visiting the national shrine, a gathering point for millions every year. The highway would have p resented an obstacle between the Monastery of .Iasna Gora (Hill of Light), site of the shrine, and the city o f Czestochowa, where virtually all pilgrims to the
shrine sleep and eat during their visits. The highway would have cut across the walking routes from the city to the shrine. A pedestrian underpass had been under construction, but Polish bishops said the underground route would have made things particularly difficult for children and elderly people trying to visit the shrine. In early January. Cardinal S tefan Wynzynski of Warsaw strongly criticized the government plan and a sked prayers "for the intention of the Jasna Gora shrine endangered by the stubbornly pursued plans of t he Czestochowa local authorities.

In the article, titled " Why I Remain a Catholic," Father Kung e xplained why he stays in the church despite his many disputes with c hurch authorities, culminating last December with a Vatican decree declaring that he can no longer be considered a Catholic theologian or teach as one.

The priest rejected what he called "a Protestant radicalism" that "wants to begin again simply at zero" in the Gospel w ithout taking the historical Christian heritage into account.

A NOTED MISSIONARI. MONTEREY, America. 1784.
At January Marriage Preparation conference were (top) Philip MOUNTFORD of Cannington FOGG of Kelmscott who will marry on March 15 and (below) Kathy LYNCH of Menora and Nick FLORID() of Bayswater whose wedding takes place on March 22.
Franciscan missionary, Padre Juniper Serra 0.F.M., was buried today at San Carlos mission, Carmel, near here. His funeral took place with full Spanish Naval and Military Honours. Padre Serra (71) was a well-known and highly respected figure here on America's west coast. His monument is the string of Saint-named Indian missions founded by him over his last 15 years: San Diego, Sans Carlos, Sans Antonio, San Gabriel, San Luis Obispo, San Juan Capistrano, Santa Clara, San Buenaventura and, north of here, San Francisco. He was a Doctor of Theology and Professor of Philosophy at Palma University, Majorca. before coming as a missionary to the New World in 1750. At first he was a missionary down Mexico way.
Nations compete Later, despite ulcerated feet and legs and bouts of asthma, he rode this western territory accompanied by a cavalry escort. Under his administration the Indians enjoyed a marked improvement in living stantards. Some 6,000 are said to have been Baptized and Confirmed. These missions in the west came into being as a result of Spain's decision to extend its power up the coast. Its 1769 decision to do so was a matter of self preservation. Both Russia and France were reported to be interested in the Spanish silver mines of the south west. The French had pushed on down the Mississippi river since its discovery last century by Jesuit missionary, Fr. Jacques Marquette. They held sway from Natchez to Mobile, way down the river, to New Orleans on the gulf.
West Coast boom The emerging American Republic, too, which declared its independence of England in 1776 and won the war by last year, might also show interest in the west. Consequently, two Spanish Naval and Military expeditions were sent up the west coast here to occupy the ports of San Diego and Monterey. Padre Serra went with them and founded his first two missions. T wo civilian colonies have also been established, one called San Jose and the other called Los Angeles. There also are a few Spanish ranches in this area. Latest figures to hand number Franciscan missions in Spanish territory at 100, with 450 missionaries caring for about 200,000 Indians. Some 29 Jesuits, with 29 missions along the Colorado river, were expelled by the Spanish Government after the Pope suppressed the Jesuit Order in 1767.

The suppression of the Jesuits was the result of attacks on them by some members of the irreligious, French 'intelligentsia'. F.M. Voltaire, J.J. Rousseau and others, who regarded themselves as 'enlightened' people, ridiculed the Church (and especially and Jesuits) as being an obstacle to 'world progress'. They decried any need of a revealed religion, or of divine assistance. 'Reason' and 'science' can solve the world's problems, they say. A hundred years ago, the Jesuits converted wild Indian tribes of Paraguay into a very successful Christian community based on cooperative living. The scheme had been inspired by Dominican Father (later bishop) Bart de las Casas, O.P. In 1767 it all ended when Pope Clement 14 (afraid, some say, of Church schism) bowed to the anti-Jesuit propaganda and suppressed the Society of Jesus. Spain and France expelled all Jesuits from their territories. The peaceful Paraguayanas, attacked by marauders, have now reverted to savagery. According to military scout, Pecos Jim, Indians here in the wild west vary a great deal in character.
Around the Churches this week An up-to-the-moment report by Father JOSEPH RUSSELL "Down near the Rio Grande" he says," the Apaches are real wild ones" "The Yuma Indians, near the Colorado, ha ,- e massacred missionaries" "Those up here near Monterey are a spiritless lot; while, down near San Diego, you can't trust any of them" "Yet the Chumash, south of here, are a lively but orderly lot who really know how to make a canoe" "Between San Diego and San Francisco I've come across 6 different languages". "While the Church has all the influence here in the west. the 13 Republic colonies of the east ar.-: almost completely Protestant: Congregationalist, Baptist and Methodist. Pennysylvania, founded by Quaker, W.Penn, with its capital of Philadelphia (meaning Brotherly Love) is friendly to all religions. There are signs that Protestantism in America is tending towards a non-doctrinal, emotional sort of religion. W andering preachers travel the eastern territories laying great stress on the last book of the Bible, the Apocalypse. The Apocalypse (or book of Revelations)deals with the end of the world and Christ's second coming. Such groups as the 'Shakers' and the 'Jumpers' rely on inner guidance by the Spirit.
Strange doings The Shakers are characterized by shaking, whirling, shouting, prophesying, dancing. . and singing in strange tongues. Ex-Quaker, 'Mother Lee', formerly Ann Lec (48) from England, is the guiding force. The Shakers believe that Christ is the 'male principle' and Mother Lee is the 'female principle'. They deny every single Christian doctrine, it seems, and their goal is union with Christ at His second coming. Meanwhile, American Independence is forcing England to look elsewhere for a place to send convicts and the like. New Holland may be the choice. Saint Peter was asked if it was much good the Jesuits and others pushing out into new countries if they were going to be stabbed in the back by the so-called Catholics back in Europe. The Church did not cause the Dark Ages: rather, it steered the world through them by the rudder offaith. It will do the same through any Dark Age caused by 'enlightened' philosophers or scientists. When such scientists realise that trusting their 5 senses is itselfan act offaith they will trust nothing (and go mad), or turn back to the Church. HIS Church is the guardian of faith and of a fear-free common sense. ' Why are you so frightened?' HE asked US, it'd the middle of the storm, 'Haven't you got any faith?'

hat is the real truth about China? The recent ordination of a new bishop in Peking has again focused attention on religion in China. Religious and secular papers have pointed out that Michael Fu Tieshan, 47, the new bishop of Peking, was not appointed by Rome but was selected for the position by the Patriotic Association of Chinese Catholics. Neither is the ordaining bishop, Michael Yang of Chingoe diocese in the southern province of Hunan, recognised as legitimate because he too was not appointed by Rome. Both are members of the Patriotic Association of Chinese Catholics. The Association, sometimes called the Chinese National Church, has been in the news since the present Chinese Government began showing a more tolerant attitude to religion in general and to Mohommedanism and Christianity in particular.
A way from Rome The Religious Affairs Bureau of the Chinese Government organised the association in 1957 to draw the allegience of Chinese Catholics away from Rome and direct to itself. The Religious Affairs Bureau forced Catholics to join the association or face severe consequences. Pope Pius XII condemned the Association in 1958. How to "read" religious news from inside China is not always easy. Father Bernard Cleary, Director of the Columban Fathers for ,Australia and New Zealand, advises caution in accepting religious news from China at face value. Before the Chinese Communists took over there were 150 Columbans working in three dioceses in China. By the early 1950's all were expelled, some after serving prison sentences. The Columbans have maintained contact with Chinese priests and lay Catholics.
Still loyal These contacts have revealed a story of loyalty to the Faith in the face of sustained persecution that was at times quite violent. The worst period was during the Great Cultural Revolution starting in 1966. Father Cleary bases his advice on letters received from a former missionary priest in China who has regular contact with priests and lay Catholics inside China. The contacts insist that in evaluating religious news from China certain facts must be kept in mind. The Patriotic Association is the brain child of the Communist Chinese government and is not an organisation that arose spontaneously. It arose out of the government demand that all Chinese Catholics sever connections with the Pope and publicly condemn the Vatican and the Roman Catholic Church as a tool of imperialism. Refusal to break with Rome led directly to persecution.
End to religion According to the contacts the new bishop in Peking made it quite clear there is no ,change in government policy and none is contemplated in demanding the break with Rome. In March 1979 the head of the Religious Affairs Bureau stated the present government policy is to hasten the day when all religion will disappear from Chinese life. The Bureau's interest in religion is to make it extinct. Statements from the new bishop in Peking and the present bishop in Shanghai (also a member of the Association) leave no doubt they are really puppets and speak for the Bureau only. To recognise the Association now would be selling out on 90% of the Chinese Catholics who remained faithful to Rome and in consequence of their loyalty suffered persecution. To allow the State to select and nominate bishops would be just as disastrous for the Church in China as it has been in other countries. The contacts say it is evident unusual standards of fitness have been applied to the selection of some of t hose already appointed as bishops. The archbishop in Foochow in Fukien province, they say, has a wife and three children living with him in the bishop's house. Also they do not doubt the the new bishop in Peking has wit., and at least one child.
By Father Patrick BURKE, St. Columban's Missionary Society, Essendon, Victoria.
Priests struggle on Because they are not allowed to perform religious cermonies in public, priests work at a variety of jobs to support themselves. Teaching English seems to be an occupation for those Chinese priests who studied overseas and write and speak the language. Some live in labour camps, as does one who wrote: "There is terrible discrimination here.Iget a coolie's wages for doing a good teaching job. Sometimes they even take me for a slave. "But these friends never find me a coward in any way and feel at a loss to bring me round to changing my attitude towards 'The National Church'. "I can easily find a job anywhere butIam a native of this county, I have friends all over the place. My friends come to see me every day and I call on them whenever I can. "Although very much fed up and upset sometimes,I hate to leave this place. I'll stay here as long as I can" From another letter the reason for staying is obvious. There are Catholics to be cared for in these camps. Writing from a camp in Kiangsi province one priest said: "I am not going home for the present. I have considered this matter very carefully and have come to the conclusion that I should remain on here.
I n God's hands "Anyway, I am not free to make may own decisions. I leave everything in God's hands in whose care I confided myself long ago. "What the future holds - whether it will be peaceful or troublesome - only God knows. "Please ask your sister and all who are interested in us to pray especially to Our Lady that we may remain faithful to the end to Our Lady and faithful to the Church." He continues: "Even if I could go to your place I would not want to go. "I am a shepherd and I have sheep to look after. I cannot allow the wolf to come and destroy my sheep. If it be God's will I am willing to die for my sheep". He finishes on a more mundane note: ..."prices of all foods have increased considerably in recent months but I am earning enough to support myself so you need not worry about this." There is no reliably exact figore for the number of legitimate bishops alive in China today.
A live, in prison It is certain that the legitimate bishop of Shanghai, Bishop Kung Ping-mei, is still in prison in Shanghai; the legitimate Archbishop of Canton, Bishop Teng, is still in prison in Canton. Nobody is allowed to see or interview them. The source continues: "Unfortunately we do not have complete information on the remaining legitimate bishops who numbered about 40 by the time the Patriotic Association was established. "A number of these are certainly dead but we have heard of one or two who live in circumstances similar to that of the priests we know." Commenting on the bishops selected by the a ssociation the source said: "It is interesting to note that in 1958, 23 Chinese bishops were appionted to lead the Patriotic Church." Between 1959 and 1963 twenty more were added. " Then in 1963 The United Front (of all religions)was dismantled and with it disappeared the Religious Affairs Bureau. "In 1966-69 most of the Patriotice Association bishops were victims of the Great Cultural Revolution and many were condemned as 'frauds and hypocrites".
