"Where salvation touches him in his life is right here. "He's alcoholic, he's not free. "And I'm saying that Jesus wants to free him now." Does charismatic renewal know where it is going?

SYDNEY. — People in large numbers are beginning once again to appreciate the necessity of prayer and to return to its practice, Cardinal Freeman told the third National Charismatic Conference here recently.
The cardinal was speaking at the closing Mass of the conference, which he concelebrated with four other bishops and about 200 priests at the Hordern Pavilion. He added: "There was a time in our recent history when we witnessed a decline in prayer, in devotional practice and in spirituality generally. "And in many instances, alas, this decline was not only freely admitted but was actually defended. "There were those who suggested that this world and its condition should be the sole object of our attention, that social action should be the order of the day to the exclusion of everything else. "As a consequence, prayer and meditation as a form of escapism when they were not actually considered as a waste of time.
"HORIZONTALISM" "There were others who suggested that union with Christ could only be attained through our fellowmen, that Our Divine Lord could not be approached directly. "This in turn led to horizontalism. "There was a tendency to forget Our Divine Lord's warning that without Him we could do nothing and that if we are to produce good fruit we should be united to Him as the branch is united to the vine. "Forgotten, too, it would seem, was the fact that Our Lord reduced the commandments to two not merely to one: love of neighbour certainly, but love of God first.

"The result was that they ceased to pray and ceased to appreciate the value of prayer. "At the same time, many of the devotional practices of former days were abolished and nothing was put in their place. 'UNION' IN PRAYER "On the contrary, it was simply stated that these admirable activities should be performed in union with Our Lord if they are to be truly successful and that such union should be sought in prayer. "Where such union exists, love of neighbour follows as a matter of course. "People in large numbers are beginning once again to appreciate the necessity of prayer and to return to its practice. "The Spirit of God is moving over the troubled waters. "This renewal in prayer is spreading right round the world; personal prayer, shared prayer and movements for the promotion of prayer and closer union with Our Divine Lord. "Among such is the movement to which you belong.
NOTHING 'SPURIOUS' "Your presence here today indicates the dispositions that prompt you. "You are not people in search of novelty or sensation nor arg you urged on by a spurious enthusiasm that is at once unhealthy or misleading. "If it is given to you to experience the working of the Holy Spirit, you must not forget that He still works within you even when external manifestations are absent provided we place no obstacle. "You are mindful, too, of that fact that always and everywhere you should be noted for your fidelity to the doctrines of the Faith. "Any divergence on this point, any compromise can only spell disaster."

First Cursillo in W.A. for women;17 in weekend course Last weekend, 17 women from Perth and Bunbury took part in the first Cursillo for women in Western Australia.
It was only the second such weekend held in the State. The first was last year, when a team of men came from Melbourne in October. A team of ten women, led by Miss Margaret Starkey, came from Sydney to conduct the weekend, and with them was Father Des O'Neil as spiritual director. The Cursillo is a livein weekend, designed to be a short refresher course in Christianity. Started in Spain in the 1940's, it is now a worldwide movement, one of the many renewal movements in the Church. During the three days, talks are given by lay people and priests and there are periods of time for discussion and prayer. Mostly, the participants find that the talks "reach them" because they are given by laity drawing on their own experience of life and faith. .4ftliNiNitNivAtrA040140NoW40

Unhappy origin' of primacy problem
The Malta Report of the Anglican/ Roman Catholic Joint Preparatory Commission (1968) outlined the large measure of agreement in faith which exists between the Roman Catholic Church and the churches of the Anglican Communion It then went on to note three specific areas of doctrinal disagreement. These were listed in the report as matter for joint investigation. Accordingly, the Anglican/Roman Catholic International Commission, proposed by the report, was recommended to examine jointly 'the question of intercommunion, and the related matters of church and ministry," and "the question of authority, its nature, exercise and implications." To our previous agreed statements on the eucharist (Windsor, 1971) and ministry (Canterbury, 1973) we now add an agreed statement on authority in the church (Venice, 1976). The commission thus submits its work to the authorities who appointed it and, with their permission, offers it to our churches. The question of authority in the church has long been recognised as crucial to the growth in unity of the Roman Catholic Church and the churches of the Anglican Commission. It was precisely in the problem of papal primacy that our historical divisions found their unhappy origin. Major seminarians numbered 521 at the end of 1976, as against 555 in the previous count. Nevertheless, the latest figure for average weekly Mass attendance — not given in the Catholic Directory but supplied by the Catholic Education Council — shows a modest increase, from 1,753,000 in 1974 to 1,790,980 in 1975. This could mark a bottoming-out of the steady decline shown from the peak figure of 2,114,219 recorded in 1966. Anglicans, with seven times the membership, estimated their Sunday church attendance in England at 1,410,000 in 1973, the last year for which figures are available.

Roman Catholics, on their side, would be enriched by the presence of a particular tradition of spirituality and scholarship, the lack of which has deprived the Roman Catholic Church of a precious element in the Christian heritage. The Romanic Church has much to learn from the Anglican synodical tradition of involving the laity in the life and mission of the church. We are convinced, therefore, that our degree of agreement, which argues for greater communion between our churches, can make a profound contribution to the witness of Christianity in our contemporary society. It is in this light that we would wish to submit our conclusions to our respective authorities, believing that our work, indebted, as it is, to many sources outside the commission as well as to its own labors, will be of service not only to ourselves but to Christians of other traditions in our common quest for the unity of Christ's church. #4.11.04.414.4.4PAINVINk
INTRODUCTION
1. The confession of Christ as Lord is the heart of the Christian faith. To him God has given all authority in heaven and on earth. As Lord of the church he bestows the Holy Spirit to create a communion of men with God and with one another. To bring this koinonia to perfection is God's eternal purpose. The church exists to serve the fulfillment of this purpose when God will be all in all. 2. Through the gift of the Spirit the apostolic community came to recognise in the words and deeds of Jesus the saving activity of God and their mission to proclaim to all men the good news of salvation. Therefore, they preached Jesus through whom God has spoken finally to men. Assisted by the Holy Spirit, they transmitted what they had heard and seen of the life and words of Jesus and their interpretation of his redemptive work. Consequently, the inspired documents in which this is related came to be accepted by the church as a normative record of the authentic foundation of the faith. To these the church has recourse for the inspiration of its life and mission; to these the church refers its teaching and practice. Through these written words the authority of the Word of God is conveyed. Entrusted with these documents, the Christian community is enabled by the Holy Spirit to live out the gospel and so to be led into all truth. It is therefore given the capacity to assess its faith and life and to speak to the world in the name of Christ. Shared commitment and belief create a common mind in determining how the gospel should be interpreted and obeyed. By reference to this common faith each person tests the truth of his own belief. Within the first Eucharistic Prayer we mention by name two lists of saints who were martyred during the first four centuries after the death of Christ. The rubrics used to instruct the celebrant to bow his head on mentioning the name of the saint on his or her feast day. This delightful little courtesy wins the saint's affection for us and in gratitude that saint so honoured will be active in our cause, praying the Mass with us and for us. The saints make up our deficiencies. As members of the Communion of Saints through Baptism, we are never alone in offering the holy sacrifice.
