John Bede Polding, 0.S.B., was born on 18th October, 1794 in Liverpool, England. In 1334 he was consecrated as Bishop of Hiero Caesara, in partibus infidelium, and appointed Vicar Apostolic of New Holland. He arrived in Australia in 1835, thus to become the founder of the Catholic hierarchy in Australia. In 1842 he was appointed Archbishop of Sydney. He died at the Sacred Heart Presbytery, Darlinghurst on 16th March, 1877.

In 1836, including Polding, a total of seven' priests ministered to the needs of the more than 20,000 Catholics in Australia. The 1835 population of Australia was 111,945 and of this number 44,308 were convicts. By 1877, there were 2,031,136 people in the various colonies and territories and by this time Bishops had been consecrated for Sees in Hobart, Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane and six provincial dioceses.

As a boy, Polding manifested an interest in Australia and, following his arrival, he developed a deep love for the country which he adopted. He was 'one of Australia's early, true patriots. "Before everything else we are Catholics; and next, by a name swallowing up all distinctions of origin, we are Australians; . . . we are no longer Irishmen, and Frenchmen, and Englishmen and Scotchmen, but Australians". These words of John Bede Polding, founder of the Catholic hierarchy in Australia and first Archbishop of Sydney, show something of the love and the expectations their author held for the place which the Spanish explorer, Quiros, had named Australia del Espiritu Santo, the South Land of the Holy Spirit, a place which Quiros never saw. Polding hoped and worked to allow the actions of the Spirit to develop a great, southern civilisation in Australia. He believed that Christian refinement could deliver European Australia from its crude and cruel penal origins.
HIS JOURNEYS
Polding came from the peace of an English monastery to a raw colonial society which was in a state of restless growth. He responded with a missionary zeal in the tradition of St. Paul and St. Francis Xavier which ended only with his death, over forty years after his arrival in 1835. He journeyed by carriage, on horseback and by sea to bring the good news to the remotest places in the continent but these, his first and best-known efforts, did not constitute the essence of his ministry. The passion which governed his life's work was centred on the major struggle, the major hope which challenges the faith of each Christian, to become perfect even as the Father is perfect.
SANCTITY ABOVE All
To Polding, sanctity was what mattered most. To him saints, not legislators, were the true agents of human civilisation. Parents he thought, ought to prepare their children to he saints, not just successful. Priests, he felt, needed hearts which had been quietened by contemplation rather than hearts heavy with burdens which stemmed from money, debt and building programmes. 41.041.44.04,
He told those who wanted to serve the Lord that an increase in prayer, rather than in action, was what was of prime importance. And as he had proved himself in action through his missionary journeys, his work with convicts, with Aborigines, for outcasts and orphans and in the building of churches and schools, so he proved himself in prayer. The first to admit his own mistakes, he also counted as his own the mistakes and failings of those for whom he was responsible, shortcomings which cost him much suffering. Although it is possible to debate aspects of Polding's policies, their Christian inspiration and the strength of their author's desire for sanctity stand above dispute. His aim was to offer Our Lord's message in its full excellence. Given the origins and circumstances of Australia, who can doubt the splendour of his hope? He wanted the Church in Australia to develop spiritually and intellectually, so that its members, clergy, religious and laity, could help to refine and to civilise the society to which they belonged. He saw the Christ-life which this implied as being nourished by the Church's sacraments, by unending prayer and by a quiet reading of the Scriptures and sound spiritual works. He placed great emphasis on the teaching offered by the liturgy. To him, the way in which Lent was lived set the Christian tone of the ensuing year. Lent he saw as the season of sacrifice, atonement and dedication and he saw the living of it as being unavoidably connected with almsgiving and generosity.

• By JOE MORLEY in the 'Catholic Weekly' SYDNEY theologian and director of the Aquinas Academy, John Thornhill, Marist Father, recently appealed to other theologians and priests to interest themselves in and give direction to the Charismatic movement.
In a recent interview, Fr. Thornhill said that it was unfortunate that more theologians and priests had not given direction and help to the Charismatic movement. "Whatever one's judgment of the movement might be, it is influencing a large number of people, including Catholics," he said. "Members of the movement see for themselves the need for sound teaching and direction. "Priests and pastors must share the blame for any mistakes which the Charismatic movement might make in the future, unless they come to their assistance. "There is particular need for direction because of the complex theological issues involved and the fact that many of those who are in the movement do not always have any theological education. "They must be given some guidance if they are to avoid falling into a naive approach." Father Thornhill said that it was most important that Charismatics should see and realise that their particular form of renewal fitted into the pattern of the history of the Church.

"Properly directed, these people in their 'faith sharing' are able to benefit, not only themselves, but also to communicate to one another what their personal faith is. "It is when this sharing is made demonstrative that other people often fail to understand them and become critical. . "This is because in the past sharing has been a very private matter. In public our relationships are usually very formal.

Of the dangers against which Charismatics should guard, Father Thornhill said, the foremost was fundamentalism or a naive intellectual approach. "This is caused by a lack of sound scholarship or instruction and an intolerance of discussion," he said. "It is accompanied by a literal interpretation of the Scriptures, which is unsound and results in failure to benefit from modern scholarship and interpretation. "In this time of renewal people have to be particularly careful to distinguish between accidentals and essentials. "Another danger . the. Charismatics mist guard - against is elitism.
"They could easily fall into the frame of mind in which they would believe that they are the elite among the faithful and that to be fully alive in the Holy Spirit one must belong to the Charismatic Renewal Movement. "In fact the charisms are apparent in many different ways throughout the Church. The Holy Spirit is not confined to any particular manifestation. "They must be careful also not to fall into institutionalism.

"They could become more and more institutionalised and become a Church within a Church. "The institutional forms with which they should identify themselves are already established in the Church. "They have the capacity to and should enrich and enliven the Church and all its activities. "Charismatics should also be careful about not being caught up in the 'cultural baggage' of evangelism. "There is a natural out-pouring of emotion associated with the joy of the Charismatic experience, which at first encounter can repel many people, including other Catholics. "Bishop Joseph McKinney, auxiliary bishop of Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA, who is the episcopal link between the American hierarchy and the Charismatic renewal movement in that country, has said that no one should make a judgment on Charismatics before attending at least six of their meetings. "When it is reflected upon, the expression of emotion is easily defended, provided it is always kept within reasonable limits and with due regard for others' susceptibilities. "The Charismatics must be aware that many of the signs and customs which they have adopted have come from the 'cultural baggage' of evangelism as practised in North America.
'AVOID USE OF CLICHES'
"Catholic Charismatics therefore need to be discerning and to be mindful of the reactions they must expect to encounter even from fellow Catholics. "They should avoid the use of cliches, empty phrases and gestures." Father Thornhill emphasised that most Catholic theologians and Scripture scholars do not regard the Charismatic gifts as normally being miraculous. "Similar manifestations are to be found throughout history and outside the Christian experience as well," he said. "The majority of scholars say that such manifestations are a form of self-expression beyond the normal but that they are not necessarily miraculous at all. "The difference in a Christian community is that this self-expression takes place through the grace and blessing of the Holy Spirit. "However, as Our Lord himself said, those who profess the true faith should always expect direct interventions, which are manifestly possible to God alone — what we call 'miracles'. "The charismatic gifts of prophecy, healing and tongues are too little understood."

Concerning prophecy, Father Thornhill said that it did not necessarily indicate any miraculous manifestation, but rather the possession through close communication with God of a clear insight into the practical Mind of God. "The prophet can evaluate the surroundings in which he finds himself and can say what God wants done about such circumstances," he added. "The way in which this is expressed will vary in different ages and circumstances -- as the Old Testament prophets and saints down through the ages and in the present day make clear. sickness. . . SALT LAKE CITY (NC). — A Catholic priest said Mass, gave Communion and imparted a final blessing to condemned murderer Gary Gilmore before his execution last week, at Draper near here. The priest was Father Meersman. Thomas chaplain at Utah State prison and who has been a prison chaplain for 18
years.
It was the third execution he had attended; he was present, along with the doctor and prison officials, when the black hood was placed over Gilmore's head. Gilmore's last words were "Dominus Vobiscum" (The Lord be with you). The priest, surprised, answered automatically "Et cum spiritu tuo" (And also with You). Father Meersman said that he was surprised at Gilmore's last words because he didn't know that Gilmore knew Latin. But he said Gilmore was born and raised a Catholic. Father Meersman said that Gilmore went to Mass and received Holy Communion within 36 hours of his execution. Gilmore's of One guards was a Catholic

and served the Mass, Father Meersman said. "Everyone at the Mass felt that Gilmore got a great deal out of it," Father Meersman said. He said that Gilmore did not read the Bible often, but that when he did, he liked the 103rd Psalm. Part of that Psalm reads: "Merciful and gracious is the Lord. Slow to anger and abiding in kindness. He will not always chide, Nor does he keep his wrath forever. Not according to our sins does he deal with us, Nor does he requite us our to according crimes."
He said that Gilmore had said a number of times that he wanted to die with "dignity." Tea brought to bed by a solicitous husband far from "not doing any harm" is, in my limited but long years of matrimonial experience, of major value in contributing to domestic bliss. The article "Dangerous eight minutes of the day in Marriage" (The Record January 20) suggests that the wife supplies the returning husband when home from work with a "beer or a coffee". But why not tea? • It is not improbable that the first English queen to sip of China tea, Catherine of Braganza may have found that the taking of tea to him in bed helpful in remaining on good terms with her somewhat erratic husband Charles II, the Merry Monarch.

Yet another royal and early patron, Queen Anne, seems to have coined the expression, "a sinking feeling" and, as Pope tells us, "Sometimes counsel takes and sometimes tea". And teatime for her was 5 p.m. It used to be a convent joke that if the ancient fathers had known of tea they would have used it instead of salt in Holy Water and this thesis was supported by the triple

'Right of theunborn to be born Sir, Archbishop Gleeson of Adelaide has proclaimed the Feast of the Holy Innocents as a day of atonement and sorrow for the 15,500 lives destroyed by abortion during the past seven years in South Australia. (The Record, December 30). I believe that is an hornfic statistic. It equates to nearly three-4 quarters of the population of either Bunbury or Geraldton. The essential safeguard of democracy in Australia is our great Rule of Law. Many years ago, the States' Legislatures passed laws to forbid the unlawful killing of a child "on ventre sa mere" (in the womb of its mother). The Archbishop's pastoral letter states without equivocation that in South Australia the Legislature "has removed the law's protection of the unborn." He describes the evil consequence, the destruction of so very mazy unborn lives as a tragedy and a travesty of justice. I think that is a most damning consideration.
