ROME ( NC). — Pope Paul has opened the New Year with ringing condemnations of abortion and liberalised abortion laws. In the presence of Rome's Communist mayor and diplomats accredited to the Vatican, Pope Paul issued one of the strongest and frankest attacks of his reign against those who seek abortion and against laws which permit them to do so.

"Is the life that at its life and order of society, the saying that took root in very conception springs up good social relationship and the minds of people, "If in the mother's womb not peace in its fullest and most you want peace, prepare for really and truly human life? radical sense rest on the ob- war: This is a disastrous , servance of respect for despairing saying," the Pope DEFENCELESS life." asserted. Pregnancy Help, recently established on a full time basis, was a local and practo many tical answer women's difficulties. The phone service, 256919, was manned during working hours Monday to Friday by a team of married women, experienced in counselling. They were prepared to talk about any aspect of pregnancy that was causing anxiety in a person. Where it was needed or requested, help would be sought from other specialised people. Help Pregnancy The Service, Father Hickey • exwelcomed plained, even calls from women who felt that abortion was the solution to their problem. Often, after some time and a sympathetic hearing, he explained, women were more able to look honestly at their motives and assess whether abortion was what they really wanted. Father Hickey said that the biggest difficulty faced by ordinary people was a feeling of helplessness and frustration while abortion was being discussed at a political or moral level. Instead, he said, their real task was with their circle of contacts, with their nextdoor neighbours, and being prepared . to go to any lengths to show compassion and acceptance of people who because of their pregnancy felt distressed or rejected by others.

SPY TRIALS IN SEOUL

ABORTION The public will deserve better treatment during the coming election than a transparent effort by a DAILY NEWS cartoon last Monday to trump up a so-called Catholic confrontation with political candidates. After such a brilliant opening we could well do with some witty suggestions on what politicians ought to think about the sinuous financial tentacles of the Australian Press monopolies and their allies. The Catholic Church is not a puppet obliged to dance when and how the media decide to play their tunes on moral issues. The WEST AUSTRALIAN knows best why a feature article on abortion by a staff writer happened to become the front page leading story last Monday morning, just days after the date of a State election was announced.

THE SPOKESMAN Nevertheless, Father Barry Hickey, Director of the Catholic Family Welfare Bureau, and an official Church spokesman on this matter, was willing to

come to the party.

He was interviewed by the paper for 20 minutes but apparently he was sufficiently uninteresting to merit but a few sentences on page 10, and then only to see if there was a chink in the Catholic armour. The Church's stand is constantly made clear from Pope Paul, on January 1 this year, down to local bishops. Whether this opinion is supposed to Be battling for survival against secular humanists in Rome, London, Adelaide or Perth has little to do with the basic premise on which the stand is taken. Human life, a creative act of God the Father, with the co-operation of the parents, exists with dignity and rights from the moment of conception until death occurs through natural causes,

IN CRISIS Cases of extreme crisis will Occur but human people consistently prove that God inspires them to undertake love for another human being long after selfish rationalism has run its course. The Catholic Church locally has backed up its stand. The Archbishop has pledged the resources of the archdiocese to assist any woman distressed by an unwanted pregnancy. A recently established Pregnancy Help service has put this help on a professionally available basis, and the flow of enquiries to date, albeit small, proves that it is serving a need. It requires faith to pick up another human being whether the tiniest mite or a shrivelled old body but such human faith, Christian or otherwise, is the real centre of the abortion crisis

NO CHARADE So the quarrel with abortion is more than some hide and seek charade with lawmakers, politicians, doctors, nurses, counsellors and others whose interests are better served if the public don't know what they are thinking or, worse, doing. The statistics quoted with regard to local abortions prove that hospitals and doctors who perform this service are pandering largely to a generation of people which has lost all regard and respect for life in the human womb. Once the cry was for the availability of contraceptives. But now that they are freely available we have a rising generation of people who cannot be bothered even to use them and for whom the conception of human life has become an event of no consequence.

BOND OF LOVE At the time of marriage a man and woman enter into a bond of love that embraces their fertility, creativity and their deepest aspirations for happiness. Yet materialism turns so many marriages into mindless units with an insatiable quest for their own convenience and in which children are no more than a commodity to choose or reject as the moment suits. Pity then the adolescent woman who finds herself pregnant and turns to her mother only to find abortion proposed as the remedy to cause the least convenience to all but the unborn child. Will we reach some point of madness when al pregnant woman will cringe and apologise for her condition? From the comments of many it would appear that such a moment in history has arrived.

THE EXCUSE

Some will pretend to enjoy the intellectual excuse that it all has to do with Dachau, Hiroshima or the human wastelands of Ethiopia or Bangladesh. But while Australia suffocates to death with its affluence the question has to be answered where it begins: in the houses, flats, home units and villas If Perth suburban areas; in the primary schools, high schools and universities of our own town. There's more to do about the abortion issue than merely to take issue with those who teeter on a nolitical tightrope.

Cardinal Dearden

ARCHBISHOP RAISES ISSUE OF CONSCIENCE IN PROCUREMENT Of ABORTION Are doctors, nurses and medical personnel being pressurised in South Australia to take part in abortions? asked Archbishop Gleeson of Adelaide in a hard-hitting homily on the problem. He spoke at a Day of Atonement Mass held in Saint Francis Xavier's Cathedral on the. Feast of the Holy Innocents. He issued a challenge to those charged with the administration of South Australia's abortion laws. "May I ask publicly whether all the regulations issued to protect the rights of nurses are being observed, or has there been a gradual denial of the rights of conscience to many nurses and even to doctors, under the threat of loss of their appointments?" He explained why abortion was being linked to the commemoration of the young children massacred by Herod at the time of Christ's birth.

"INNOCENTS" The word "innocents" is derived from the Latin word "innocens", meaning the one who does not injure, or harm. We are observing a special Day of Atonement and sorrow for the innocents unborn who have died as a result of the so-called liberalisation of our civil law. Our laws in S.A. do not require any person to have an abortion, but the changes in the law have had serious and far-reaching consequences, ignored or denied by the promoters of the changes but clearly f oreseen by the opponents. What are these consequences? • There has been the removal of the protection of the law from the unborn and the granting of the legal right to kill to those who are professionally committed to the saving of life. • There has been the denial of the fact that a genetically- unique and human life is being destroyed in spite of all the scientific evidence which demonstrates more and more clearly the physical and psychological unity of life in the womb with life after birth. • There has been clear evidence that the abortion law has not been restricted to the so-called "hard c ases" and the psychological reasons for abortion are clearly exaggerated. What psychological treatment is offered in these cases which constitute about 90 per cent?

UNSPEAKABLE • There has been a growing failure among many people, including Catholics, to recognise that what may be legally lawful in this issue is morally an unspeakable crime and sin against God and against human life and dignity. • There has been, or so it seems to me, a growing pressure upon doctors, nurses and all medical personnel to take part in abortions although it was earlier emphasised that no one would be or could be obliged to do so. • There has been a decline in respect for the dignity of life and of the duty to protect it — quite in contrast to the increasing legislative and other efforts to protect adult people from far less harmful activities. These changes have come about in a century which has seen a greater destruction of human life than has ever been known before. A whole scientific approach has been developed for killing in war and for destroying the psychological dignity of people. Medical science and resources are being increasingly devoted to the destruction of life before birth. Just as the senseless and vast expenditures on armaments are depriving the world of resources utgently

needed for the proper development of the people of the world, so too the practice of abortion is depriving our people here and elsewhere of medical resources needed for the protection and development of better medical care of life at every age and level of society. How appropriate, therefore, is the theme which Pope Paul has proposed for the celebration of the 1977 Day of Peace: "If you want peace defend life." In his analysis of this theme, Pope Paul frankly challenges the arms race and the policy of massive armaments, individual and collective crimes and all forms of terrorism as threats to the promotion and protection of human rights, the defence of children and of all fundamental human freedoms.

BLOW TO PEACE In one section of his peace. statement, Pope Paul emphasises that "it is not only war that kills peace. Every crime against life is a blow to peace, especially if it strikes at the moral conduct of the people, as often happens today, with horrible and often legal ease, as in the case of the suppression of incipient life, by abortion." Faced with this tragic situation for which the moral guilt rests upon all of us in different degrees, we need: • To renew our own reverence for every living person, born and unborn, of every race, color and nationality. • To give our support to all who are working to assist those faced with difficult problems related to pregnancy; I commend the many courageous doctors, nurses, social workers as well as understanding and helpful parents who give that similar informed support which is based on respect for the sacredness of human life. • To be personally supportive to the often confused and sad women, and those close to them, who feel that an abortion is the only solution to their unwanted pregnancy. • To be forgiving and understanding towards those women who have felt that they had no alternative but to have had an abortion and yet, at the same time, clearly to recognise for ourselves what a terrible sin it really is to deliberately destroy an innocent human life.

RESPECT FOR LIFE • To give that type of support to women and to

their parents, when there is a question of a pregnancy outside of marriage, which clearly indicates our reverence for life and for all people.

Catholics must help spread rightness of stand on abortion

In his letter, read in this liturgy, St. John wrote: "If we say we have no sin in us, we are deceiving ourselves and refusing to admit the truth; but if we acknowledge our sins, then God who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and purify us from everything that is wrong". With the grace of God, let us also strive to show those practical acts of reverence for life by the way we drive our cars and by the respect we offer to every pregnant woman who bears within her a real human being destined to be a member of our society to help it grow according to His plan. May Mary, the Mother of the Lord, help us in this growth in reverence. Let this Mass and this Day of Atonement be for each one of us a new beginning in our determination to be instruments of peace by giving that priority Pope Paul asks for this week: "to defend life, to heal life, to promote life."

Lebanon and the Philippines (Mindanao), and also events in Catholic countries like Spain, Portugal, Chile and other Latin American countries, were reported in the general news columns.

ferences organised by the Catholic Commission Justice and Peace in co-operation with the Protestant organisations, often in connection with the South Korean problem.

UNFAMILIAR Another difficulty in getting Catholic news published in a non-Catholic country stems from the fact that newspaper editors are not familiar with Christianity or do not like it and cannot therefore judge whether or not a piece of news merits an article. Mr. Kitamura gave as an example the meeting of Pope Paul VI with the Orthodox Metropolitan Meliton, who was representing the Ecumenical Patriarch Dimitrios I of Constantinople, a meeting at which the Pope kissed his visitor's foot as a mark of reconciliation. The mass of Press communiques which appears on this subject indicated the worldwide interest and the Japanese Press at once published the information.

SUPERFICIAL

TRANSLATORS

In general, the religious items appear in the `bungaku ran' (literary column) of the neutral Press in Japan. Mr. Kitamura pointed to the fact that articles on the Vatican are often handled superficially, with hardly ally mention of the strong points of Christian life, such as the developments since Vatican II or questions affecting human rights in America, little being reported about Africa and Asia. It is exceptional to see mention of the fight by Christians for human rights in South Korea and, before that, on the situation of the Church in Vietnam.

A lesser but nonetheless important problem is that of the translators. Many translators in Japan who translate Press communiques cannot distinguish between Catholic and Protestant terminology (cf. `shimpu' — priest, tokushi' — minister), nor can they grasp the different life styles (married ministers but celibate priests). Liturgical and doctrinal terms in particular are poorly understood. What is needed is an up-todate glossary of the journalists who are in contact with the Catholic Office of Social Communications.

Local Catholic news is in general rare, except for the odd communique on a particular occasion. There is, however, interest in the press con-

In such a context, therefore, the role of the Japanese Catholic weekly, which gives the principal Christian news, is important.
