BOGOTA, Colombia (NC). — The acting president of the Latin American Bishops' Council said that the military's growing hostility to priests and others it called "subversives" might be a concerted effort to divide and weaken the Church on this continent. CIVITAS VATICANA (NC). — Fundatio nova "Latinitas" hic Vaticano fundata est. In case you missed that, it says: "VATICAN CITY (NC). — A new "Latinity" foundation has been established here by the Vatican." One of the reasons for the existence of the foundation is to make sure there will always be people who can read sentences like the one above — or, in the words of the foundation's president, Abbot Carlo Egger, to create a "second spring" for the Latin language, which is still the official language of the Catholic Church in the West. In an inaugural address here — delivered, naturally, in Latin — the abbot stressed the centuries old relationship of Latin to the Church in the West, and went on to outline the programme that the foundation would pursue. First is encouragement of the study of the Latin language and literature, including the writings of great early and medieval Christian writers. The second programme includes promoting the use of Latin in correspondence and in the publication of some books.
This phase will concentrate on Catholic universities and seminarians through textbooks, subsidising of teachers, and conferences about methods of study. Abbot Egger observed that if a language was used even by a few people, it found new words and expressions for contemporary realities and could not thus be considered a dead language, like ancient Egyptian. The foundation is the direct outgrowth of the hand(a chirograph written and signed document), Romani Sermonis, of Pope Paul VI, dated June 30, 1976. In an opening message, Giovanni Archbishop Benelli, assistant papal Secretary of State said. "By this pontifical chirograph, Pope Paul VI has reaffirmed with all his authority that the language of Rome is the official language of the Church of the Latin rite." This was not based on
the circumstance that Latin was the language of the country in which the Gospel was widely preached in the earliest times, the archbishop said. "The reason, is," he continued, "that the language of Cicero, Virgil, Augustine and St. Leo the Great is by its nature endowed with a charism of universality, clarity, and conciseness of expression that is at once and forceful strong, pleasing." Pastoral needs that were emphasised by the liturgical movement beginning at the turn of the century, he continued, gradually culminated in the use of local languages in the liturgy through the approval of Vatican Second the Council. "But Latin was never the said eliminated," archbishop, "and today it remains no less necessary, no less meaningful and no less unifying than it was in times past."

Clergy protest on a 2JJ programme C ANBERRA: The National Council of Priests of Australia last week protested to the Australian Broadcasting Commission about a radio programme broadcast over a NSW radio station, 2JJ on November 10. The step followed an appeal from the floor of the priests' convention in Canberra by Father John Gahan. of Maitland. The priests passed a resolution, calling for a full inquiry into the 2JJ programme. quoted Fr. Gahan from the programme which described certain sex acts. He said "This was eroticism to produce erotomania and other abnormalities. "The ABC has gone
beyond its charter ‘s ith this broadcast." Fr. Gahan said that it was time for the NCP to make its presence felt in the community. A deputation was sent from the conference to deliver a letter from the chairman, Fr. Les Cashen, of Sydney, to the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs (Mr. Robinson). 0. A Sydney daily paper later reported that a 2JJ disc jockey had been dismissed over the programme.

My first marriage ceremony was just after my ordination in 1919 wizenIofficiated at the marriage of Nellie McMahon, my first cousin, to Dr. Michael Hillary, both of Milltown-Malaby, County Clare, Ireland. Four children blessed that union, two boys and two girls, the eldest son Patrick, and his two sisters, Eleanor and Elizabeth graduated in the Royal College of Surgeons, Dublin. Patrick did post-graduate studies in Canada. The girls are still in general practice. Dr. Patrick Hillary held the seat of West Clare in the Dail Parliament as a member of the Fianna Fall party. When De Valera became the Prime Minister he made Dr. Hillary Minister of Education, and later Minister of Foreign Affairs, and as such he became a member of the European Common Market representing Ireland.
WITH E.E.C.
His family, the wife is a medical doctor, set up a home in Brussels and learned French which became their family's third language, Irish, French and English. His contribution to the Europe Economic Council was noteworthy and the members requested the Irish Government to extend his time. Now he has been honoured by both parties in the Dail as President of Ireland for a term of seven years.
MANSION
The home of the Presi'lent is situated in the Phoenix Park, which covers 1700 acres. It was the vice-regal residence of the Viceroys who ruled Ireland. It is a magnificent mansion with a pologround and a herd of deer are protected to serve the table with venison. The first President of Ireland was Professor Douglas Hyde. a Protestant, from the ancient province of Ulster.
Another was an Englishman, also a Protestant, Erskine Childers. A very popular Lord Mayor of Dublin was a Jew, Ben Briscoe.
FIRST COUSIN
The other Presidents were Sean T. O'Kelly who recently retired and in his place comes Dr. Patrick Hillary. Dr. Hillary's mother was my first cousin, her father James, and my father, Thomas, both of Milltown-Malaby, were brothers. That makes me a second cousin of the new President. Dr. Hillary retains the original home of his parents at Spanish Point, which is a few miles from the Lahinch Golf Links where he returns each summer. He has been captain and president of the club, and still plays on a low handicap. He is affectionately known to all on the links as "Paddy", and I am sure This exalted office will not change his life style. The Lahinch Links by the sea has been acclaimed as "The Irish St. Andrews". There is a great variety of holes and the Liscanor Bay provides changing winds, that make every round a fresh challenge.
BLACK WATCH — FOUNDERS
The links were founded by the Scottish Regiment of the Black Watch, then s tationed as a garrison at Limerick city some 30 miles away on the banks of the Shannon River, close to Shannon air port. The club retains the colours of that regiment in its official flag. The South of Ireland championship, held in A nIttst each year, at-
tracts amateurs from many lands. There will be great rejoicing in the Lahinch Club when their popular member comes for his summer golf as President of Ireland.
Friars open their first interfaith parish KINGSTON, Jamaica (NC). — The Friars of the Atonement have opened their first interfaith parish. a joint Catholic-Anglican venture, in Bridgeport, a rapidly growing community about 13 miles from here. Named for the Martyrs of Uganda, the parish is sponsored and financed by the Catholic and Anglican dioceses. It came into being at the invitation of Catholic Archbishop Samuel Carter of Kingston. Atonement Father Martin Carter, who was ordained a year ago after serving 25 years as a Brother in the order, will join Atonement Father Richard Albert, already in residence in Bridgeport. Father Carter, a black, is a native of High Point, N.C. Currently, he is completing an assignment in the Cincinatti archdiocese. Father Albert is a native of Peekskill, N.Y. According to Atonement Father Michael F. Daniel. superior general of the Atonement Friars, initial plans call for the construction of a church whose facilities would be shared by both the Anglican and the Catholic congregations. Separate rectories will be maintained on adjacent lots for the Atonement Friars and for the .Anglican vicar and his family.

A DVENT AND PENANCE 0) PAST SINS ARE PAST . . . "The days are coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and Judah!" Like a trumpet of hope sounding through the mountains and valleys of the centuries, those are the first words we hear from God on the first Sunday of Advent. Jeremiah lived, as we do, through days and decades of uncertainty, frustration, and a series of what sometimes seemed to be blind alleys. the him, Through Lord set the Advent theme for his people. For us, who now hear that message in the light of the coming of Jesus, the theme is far more heartening and certain than when it was first uttered: Have roots in the past, live generously in the present, but anticipate the future with hopeful hearts.

FUTURE
But all our moping, brooding, and self-afflicted misery over them do no good for either God or man. Excessive fascination with our sins, in other words, accomplishes little except to distract us from the one thing important to God — the future. What's going to happen from now on? This is why Advent is such a beautiful time for receiving the sacrament of Penance. Not because we wish to brush off the dust — or mud — before Christmas Communion. But because it is a time of future-looking, a time when the Lord says again, "The days are coming when I will fulfill the promisesImade."

Right-to-die legislation . . LEARN TO LIVE THE called "first euthanasia ROSARY law" enacted in U.S. lonsignor J. T. McMahon says:
The Rosary meditations are the best introduction to the Life and Passion of Our Blessed Lord, for we go to Him through Mary.
Meditating on Mary's part in His Life and Passion will lead to an imitation of her virtues. Our growth in holiness, then, depends upon the quality of our meditations, and they will progress according to what we put into them. Why all this striving and effort in our saying of the Rosary? Because He awaits us there, waiting for us to discover Him. As a prospector must carry on through unrewarded stretches in the heat and dust, urged on with the hope that there is gold awaiting his search, so must we with equal hope persevere in Our saying of the Rosary till some day we will strike it rich as the prospector for gold does, and a spark will set fire to something within us.
"ASK AND . . .
That is what He means When He says to us: "Ask and you shall receive. seek and you-shall find. knock arid' it shall be opened to you. He is the hidden rich ore that awaits our search in the practice of the Rosary. To ask is the first step. and that gives us the help to go to the second step. which is to seek, and. having gone so far, we shall persevere to the end. which is to knock. Then it shall be opened to us. Our Lord is always asking from those who wish to love Him more to do a little extra, to walk the second mile with Him, to carry on a little longer, for He is waiting to reward those who persevere.
AS WE STUMBLE
As a very small child is encouraged to try out his wobbling legs and to do the distance between his parents on the nursery floor, the parents watching, ready to save him from falling, but leaving the effort to himself, spurring him on all the time, and then covering him with caresses when he succeeds, so is the Lord watching our stumbling approach to Him. In the Postcommunion of the Mass of the Most Holy Rosary we pray: "May we be helped, 0 Lord, we beseech Thee. by the prayers of Thy most holy Mother, whose Rosary we are celebrating, that we may draw strength from the mysteries which we reverence and obtain the effect of the Sacraments which we have received. Who livest and reignest."
FIGHT AGAINST WORLDLINESS
We need that strength to fight against the spirit of worldliness which surrounds us. The worldly spirit expresses itself in the three great evils which afflict society, namely: (1) A distaste for the
simple and laborious life; (2) a repugnance of suffering of every kind; and (3) a forgetfulness of the life to come. The first of these evils is combated by the Joyful Mysteries, the second by the Sorrowful Mysteries, and the third by the Glorious Mysteries.
SHRINKING FROM WORK
There is a growing contempt for the humble duties and virtues which make up the beauty of home life. Children are eager to withdraw themselves as speedily as possible from obedience to their parents and from home control of any kind. Men and women no longer take a pride and joy in their work. What is known as "the Government stroke" is slowly but surely killing the ideal of an honest day's work for an adequate wage. To shrink from toil and to be discontented with one's lot is to grow envious of others, and to hanker for what is beyond one's reach.
OBJECT LESSON
Young people are keen to abandon the simple, peaceful life of the country for the excitement and pleasure of the city. In the Joyful Mysteries we have set before us an object lesson in all the virtues of the Christian Life. "Let us take our stand." wrote Leo XII1. "before that earthly and divine home of holiness. the House of Nazareth. "How much we may learn from the daily life which is led within its walls! What an all-perfect model of domestic society! "Here we behold simplicity and purity of conduct. perfect agreement. an unbroken harmony. mutual respect and love.
SUFFERING
"Here is the patient industry which 'in the sweat of the brow provides what is needed for food and raiment. which is with little. contented which seeks rather to diminish its wants than to increase its resources. "Better than all. we find that supreme peace of mind and gladness of heart — that never-failing possession of a tranquil conscience." A second evil today is a repugnance to suffering and an eagerness to escape whatever is painful to .endure. This attitude is dangerous, because it leads men to seek their happiness in a chimerical civilisation. in which all that is unpleasant shall he eliminated, and varied delights provided for every sense.
CHRIST'S WAY
insatiable this By thirst for pleasure the mind is enervated, the character is demoralised. and men sink under the varied hardships of the battle of life. n meditating on the I Sorrowful Mysteries, we
see how Christ, the "Author and Finisher of our faith," began "to do and to teach," that by His example we might learn to bear our burden of labour and sorrow. We behold Him overwhelmed with anguish, so that drops of blood flow from every pore. We see Him bound like a malefactor, condemned by the ungodly, loaded with insults, covered with shame, assailed with false accusations, torn with scourges, crowned with thorns, nailed to the Cross.
EXAMPLE
Here, too, we contemplate the grief of His most Holy Mother, whose soul was pierced by the sword of sorrow, that she might be called, and might in truth be, the "Mother of Sorrows". Witnessing with the eyes of faith these examples of sublime patience and meekness, who is there whose heart will not glow with desire to walk along the Way of the Cross in the footsteps of Jesus and Mary? The third evil is a forgetfulness of the world to come. At our universities, among our leaders in Government, with the heads of our armed forces, in art. and on the stage, in letters and in industry, in public and private life there are many thinking men and women. but their thinking is guided by the intellect alone.
THE HEREAFTER
"All the land is made desolate because there is none who considereth in his heart." People today. as in the days of the prophets. do not think in the heart because the flame of the spirit is .not fed with the oil of God's grace. To most of our modern thinkers living - is bounded by the grave. In their thinking, and in their living, they are for pagans. actually whom the smoke of the crematorium means final annihilation. To them death is dissolution. desolation. and destruction. To the worldly -minded, which means paganminded, death is the end of everything, the end of their world. which began and will finish in darkness.
"SEEK FIRST. . .
They forget that the death of Christ on the Cross was His greatest victory. When Christ was crucified. those responsible little dreamt that they had defeated themselves. Christ's death is a for deliverance great those who follow in His path. Calvary is the gate-way to .eternal victory. That is the reason for celebrating the saints' death as a feast day. because on that day they Won victory. Christ commands us to seek first the kingdom of God, not, however, that We may be deprived of,
but that all things may be added unto us. The same God is the author of nature and grace; and it is not His will that they should be in conflict, but rather in alliance, that under their joint leadership we may reach that immortal happiness for which we were created.
PATH TO HEAVEN
"But men of carnal mind," Pope Leo XIII declares, "who love nothing but themselves, allow their minds and hearts so to grovel upon things temporal that they become incapable of lifting them to higher things." From this danger we shall be rescued by frequent contemplation of the Glorious Mysteries. Through those Mysteries we learn by faith what are the good things which God has prepared for those who love Him; that death is not the end of all things, but a passing from life to life, as the Preface for the Dead says: "that life is changed. not taken away," that the path to heaven lies open to all men and, as we behold Christ ascending. we recall the sweet words of His promise: "I go to prepare a place for you."
