. . A corrective by Niall Brennan

The first thing to say about Niall Brennan's biography of a remarkable Melburnian is that it is a valuable corrective to Frank Hardy's "Power Without Glory."
A second is that it is a bargain at the price. Published first in 1971, the book is even more timely today since it establishes its contention that Hardy's work resembles those of Joseph McCabe and Maria Monk — being basically absurd and muckrakers all.

Collingwood in 1871 and died in 1953.
Hardy wrote it "because he hated Catholics and the Labor Party," and so achieved notoriety with some and fame with others.
'WHAT YOU HATE' Power Without Glory," Brennan concludes, "belongs to that class of anti-history in which you write about what you hate, and invent the evidence to support that hate, and at the same time defend yourself from the charges of being called a liar by saying that it is only a novel anyway." Wren, a self-made man, a millionaire in quick time, was born in

DOING GOD'S THING
His money was made by tote gambling and such sports as boxing, pony racing and cycling. He later owned a large city daily and gold-mines.
A.L.P. ROLE
His behind-the-door, influence with the A.L.P. was considerable (decisive at times) and though, early on, he had Squizzy Taylor in his periphery, "his gambling enterprises were always conducted with scrupulous honesty." There is much more, of course, about Wren in this book; but there are lengthy sections in it when he disappears from view, replaced by a considera-ion of his times, which is too diffuse.
TWO VEINS
The book, then, has two veins — the sociological and the historical, of which the second is the most rewarding especially where the author had considerable first-hand experience of it. This shows up in part Part I is seriously marred by dragging in irrelevancies like the Bulli mine disaster of 1887, and by errors about Mt. Morgan gold mine (1881, not when Wren "was in his late teens") and about when Victoria's railways got going. Most of the sociology could profitably have been omitted, and the biography should have been concentrated. Print is smudgy on quite a few pages, and some illustrations are hazy, but for just under $3, as I said, the book is a bargain for the sound things in it.

Couples were urged to attend a follow-up interview to be sure that they had understood the method properly. On the other hand, people attending the clinic sessions made their own decision about whether the natural method was going to help their relationship. Information was essentially what a young couple were seeking, she explained. Family planning meant exactly that — planning what family they wanted and when they were able.

Priests, nuns and laity "COR PAULI, COR CHRISTI" accuse Government over SAINT JOHN s landles the work among CHRYSOSTOM
[onsignor J. T. McMahon says: ''The heart of Paul is Ize heart of Christ." I sten to those glowing wot S of this great-hearted tissionary, St. Paul. ".:.'or Him I have accep td the loss of everythir ;; and I look on eve ything as so much rut ish, if only I can hav !- Christ." (Phil. 3:8). A gain, he says to us: "In your minds you must be he same as Christ Jests." (Phil. 2:5). "Never say or do anything except in the Name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God, the Father, through Him." (Col. 3 :17).
HIS DRAMATIC CONVERSION St. Paul fell in love with the Person, Jesus Christ, on the day that he rode to Damascus to arrest the followers of the "Way". His horse, frightened by a blinding light, threw him to the ground. As he lay there, helpless, Jesus spoke to him and won him completely. The physical blindness that followed shut out the world, so that his spiritual sight saw only Jesus, who longed to be loved and served by him. Abbot Marmion comments: "St. Paul followed Christ rather than spreading a cause.fourteen Paul's St. Letters. or Epistles. breathe the spirit of that come and apparition from a heart on fire with love. A personal love of Jesus filled his heart with the driving force of fire made him "all that things to all men". Throughout his remarkable missionary life, in every circumstance, he looked inward to Jesus Christ within him as the solution and answer to every question that life brought to him. By Baptism we are

DESERVING OF A REPLY
dead to the life of nature, but born again children of God: Christ is within us.
"SONS OF GOD"
We are to put on Christ, as St. Paul tells us: "You are, all of you, sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. "All baptized in Christ, you have all clothed yourselves in Christ." (Gal, 3:27). This is the heart of the wonderful doctrine of St. Paul, the principal aim of his preaching, and the recurring theme of his Letters. He writes: "If, in union with Christ, we have imitated His Death, we shall also imitate Him in His Resurrection." (Rom. 6:5). St. Paul does not hesitate to exclaim: "Life to me, of course, is Christ." (Phil. 1:21).
FOUNDATION
This idea of St. Paul is the foundation of the whole spiritual life. It is marvellous in its simplicity. Our growth in holiness is reduced to one idea: which is. at the same time, a glorious ideal. St. Paul urges us to renounce ourselves in order to allow Christ to do all things in us. At each hour, in every action we perform, let us say to ourselves. I will not live this act. but let Christ live it in me. It was the practice of St. Vincent de Paul to say to himself before each action "How would Christ do this?" This ideal of making room for Christ by stripping the soul in order to clothe it with Christ, was
lived and preached by St. John the Baptist: "He must increase. I must decrease." (John 3:30).
"I SAY REJOICE"
Life for all of us is a mixture of joy and sorrow. St. Paul challenges us: "Rejoice in the Lord always; and again I say, rejoice." (Phil. 4:4)' God has created His children for joy. The prayer of Christ at the Last Supper bids us live in joy: "While still in the world I say these things to share My joy with them to the full." (John 17:13). may The Church march in sorrows and persecutions. but her eyes are raised to heaven in joyous anticipations.
ANSWER TO PAIN BY ST. PAUL
St. Paul has a wonderful answer to pain and suffering. He writes: "In my own body. to do what I can ' to make up all, that has still to be undergone by Christ for the sake of His body. the Church.(Col. 1:24). St. Paul's determination to imitate Christ's suffering and to reproduce Christ's Passion in his own life, proclaims to us: "I, have been crucified with Christ; and I now live, not with my own life, but with the life of Christ who lives in me." (Gal. 2:19). Pain and sorrow help us to make more room for Jesus to live in us. To practise mortifications means to become and more Christlike: thus, more joyous and courageous. To die to self is not to die. but to
We can picture the excitement in the cities around the Mediterranean world which St. Paul visited on his three great missionary journeys, as a messenger arrived with a letter from him. That evening, the faithful would gather for "The Breaking of Bread"; and then, with rapt attention, would listen to his words of comfort, consolation, and loving greeting. Again and again they would listen, and make copies to read by themselves, for reading is enriched by repetitions.
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (NC). — Priests, nuns and lay catechists working among landless farmworkers in this country's eastern provinces have accused Dominican authorities in charge of land redistribution of mishandling the job.
"FAITH COMES FROM HEARING"
These Epistles, or Letters, are posted to us during Mass, and they dean answer. a serve response from us. St. Paul assures us that: "Faith comes from hearing." To listen well is to pray well. Here are three suggestions for our response:1st: Before the readings, let us ask the Holy Spirit to open our hearts so that the seed. the Word of God. may enter us and help us grow in holiness. 2nd: Ask the Holy Spirit to keep Satan at bay and not allow him to Jistract our attention. It might help our concentration if we close our eyes as we listen. 3rd: An answer that would really please St. Paul. who writes to each one of us at Mass would be later, that same day. to read the whole Epistle from which the extract is t aken. "God has given us two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak - — Epictetus.
