TWO FACES OF YOUTH
CASTELGANDOLFO (NC). — Pope Paul has decried an "epidemic" of armed violence which, he says, is spreading among young people. At the same time, he praised what he called growing moral concern among many youths. Speaking to pilgrims before reciting the Sunday Angelus, Pope Paul condemned "the plague of armed criminality which, along with degrading vices, is spreading like an epidemic among younger generations who are without scruples or ideals." "Certain heart-rending news items keep recurring in the Press," the Pope said. But, he added, "the peaceful response of goodness is not missing either." The Pontiff, who was 79 on Sunday, also condemned guerilla wars now being waged in some countries, and the international threat of war. But he praised the forces for good, s including those working to help victims of the latest series of earthquakes in the north-eastern Friuli region of Italy. "Today there are many examples of pure and aware young people who, without any bold publicity, offer silent, noble and immensely courageous help to their peers, shaken by self-indulgent and permissive hedonism," declared Pope Paul.
"The awareness of what is good and the energy to accomplish it are not only not missing, but are reawakening and reaffirming themselves in the encounter with Christ. "Let us continue to hope and to work with Him."

Shared church and hording dedicated in England LONDON. — All Saints, a church and community building costing $210,000, the largest project of its kind in Britain, was dedicated at Stirchley, Telford, Salop, recently. The spirit of St. Francis of Assisi and his message of love and peace was very much in evidence last Sunday evening when a large congregation filled St. Aloysius Church to honour the 750th. anniversary of his death.

St. Patrick's Day is a world celebration, because his scattered children have put March 17 in the calendar of events in the lands of their adoption. One might ask what is the explanation of this enthusiasm? Some may answer that the Irish are not one of the silent tribes, and it is a good thing to grant them one day a year to make themselves heard. I chuckled when oar guide in the Holy Land, Father Godfrey, 0.F.M., on quoting from the Scriptures: "Christ met daily in the Temple", commented thqt be the lost Irishman.

A s a young priest, enjoyed the St. Patrick's Day Procession through the city streets. I recall Mr. Cornelius O'Brien leading it on his Father horse. white Crowley, the parish priest of Highgate, with his Irish Piper's Band led an it ish jaunting car with two lovely girls dressed

as Irish colleens, with their long hair flowing. They got a great hand from the spectators. We priests laughed heartily as Father Crowley worked the bladder under his arm, believing that he was part of the band. The good man did not have a note of music in him; so, to save the band from discordant sounds, the other pipers blocked the reeds in his set of pipes, and ne-er a sound came from them. He looked a bit fierce; and, with one shoulder raised, he went into battle for Ireland's cause. Later, at the W.A.C.A. Ground, he was his own joyous self; for he had laughter in his soul as he watched the Irish step-dancing, and invited one and all to join with him in "Wetting the Shamrock" (that is, to have a beer with him in the bar).

But come with me to view the Irish Parade in New York City on St. Patrick's Day, March 17. I stood on the steps of St. Patrick's Cathedral, to witness the annual parade. The Cardinal Archbishop took the salute; and, on either side of him, were the Governor of New York State, and the Mayor of New York City. As a visitor from Australia, I was invited to join the official party.

Here it came! Two standard-bearers carried the flags of the United States and the Irish tricolour. Six abreast, column after column of young cadets in uniform swung past to the accompaniment of Irish airs. The parade took an hour to pass by us. That evening, I attended a banquet in honour of the day. It was one of the many held in the city hotels.

I turned to the man on the other side of me: "Is this an Irishman?" I asked with mounting indignation. "What is he doing here on such a night?" My friend was very amused at my spirited outburst. He told me that our friend had a curious kink. On every other day of the year he took, and enjoyed, his drink. But, on March 17, he did not go to work. Early that morning he had gone to a Turkish bath, where he had soaked most of the day.
