East German pastor burns himself to death; protest
Scissors, Saws, Secateurs, Shears Sharpened and Set
BERLIN (NC).— East German Protestant Pastor Oskar Bruesewitz, 47, who made himself a human torch to protest religious persecution in Eastern Europe, has died in a hospital in Halle, a spokesman for the Lutheran Church in West Berlin has announced. Pastor Bruesewitz drenched his clothes with petrol and lit a match. His suicide in front of his parish church in Zeitz was the first of its kind in Germany. His wife, Christa, was reported in newspapers here as expressing solidarity with her husband and denying communist media charges that he was mentally "abnormal". The other East German pastors told a West German television interviewer that Pastor Bruesewitz was "a pious man," who had committed suicide in a desperate attempt to draw attenticin to the Churches' difficulties in East Germany.

One of them, Father Klaus Latk, said Pastor Bruesewitz was protesting in particular the government's drive to turn youth against Christianity. Pastor Bruesewitz had reportedly been gaoled by the East German communist authorities for helping youths in trouble with the regime.

In an interview with NC News, the 37-yearold doctor reflected on how what she saw and experienced in Chile had changed her attitude towards the poor, human rights, and towards herself. "In 1975 the Chilean National Health Service disintegrated, leaving the people with no medical c are whatsoever. All I saw was suffering and oppression," she said. "It made me take a good look at what medicine meant to me.
"Eventually I found that to go and leave a body of people with no medical care was not consistent with what I believed in, so I opted out of the rat race." It was this sense of service that caused her trouble with Chilean military authorities. On the night of October 31, 1975, Dr. Cassidy was arrested in the central house of the Columban Fathers in Santiago while she was treating a sick nun. They charged her with

Dr. T. J. Connolly, of Sydney, was canonical adviser to the meeting. Looking beyond their apostolate of school education, the meeting examined possible extensions of the Order's efforts into adult. migrant and Aboriginal education and the needs of deprived and handicapped persons. Taking a cue from their foundress. Nano Nagle, who in the 1770's was adventurous, warm-hearted and practical in everyday affairs, the Sisters asked why they could not be like her today in the climate of social change.

People, it was said, still had their poverty, their sense of isolation and need and their despair in the face of unknown danger. Nano Nagle had recognised these hardships during the penal times in Ireland. The Sisters, it was said, would bring Christ into the

"Give us courage, gaiety and the quiet mind" — so Robert Louis Stevenson pleads for joy in our outlook.
Again he writes from his bed of chronic illness: "There is no duty, we so much underrate as the duty of being happy". A poet sings to us. "Oh! laugh and be glad For life's but a joke; Find the ribs of the world And just hand them a poke;
The skies may be dark Or sunshining and blue But the hue of the skies Mustn't matter to you."
When he staggered up the rickety steps to the scaffold, he murmured: "A merry heart goes all the way." As he stumbled on the steps, with a smile he said to the guard: "Help me on my going up, as for my coming down I can look after myself." As he put his head on the block, he asked the executioner to spare his beard for it had never
SIR THOMAS MORE I recommend St. Thomas More as our patron to keep us in good humour. "A merry heart pleaseth the Lord" was the ruling factor in his whimsical life. It stood by him at his tragic end.

COLLEGE HONOURS HIM
In the chapel of St. Thomas More College within the University of W.A. there is a big window to his honour designed and made by John Hardman of Birmingham, who. has many notable windows to his credit in Australian churches. He stands a dignified figure in the official robes of the Chancellor of England under King Henry VIII. The face is strong and resolute. His mouth and chin are those of a man of iron will. The eyes, however, look with kindness and merriment on the world as the loving father of a devoted family should.

been guilty of treason. During his long interment in the Tower he was at peace, the most relaxed and bright prisoner in that dreadful place. More's ever merry heart certainly went all the way in defence of his country's liberty when it was threatened by a conscienceless royal weed and the "candle of English liberty", as Professor Pollard writes "burned very low in its socket." Of such heroic and chivalrous merriment is greatness made.

He took his homliy's theme from Scripture, which tells of Mary's visit to Elizabeth and how the baby in Elizabeth's womb leapt for joy on hearing the voice of Mary. "May God have mercy on us for the millions of babies who have not leapt for joy," he said. "There must be in our lives a sense of reparation pleading with God's mercy, and we must do all in our power to wipe the awful loss to our nation and to our culture." Speaking on the Assumption of Mary into heaven, the cardinal said: "The world has cheapened life by violence and war," but the Assumption "gives hope to all who die in the friendship of God that they will be assumed into heaven regardless of how they die or when they die." The world today had "commercialised the body of women for sexual gratification and taken her from the pedestal of glory on which we placed her," Cardinal Manning said. "The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin inspires mankind to respect the body of women," he added. "Secularism is overtaking our country, and the ease of living makes us forget the realities of life God is now unfolding through Mary — the dr#4,41.4.4s.#41.10"1.4.0414.4,41.04.4,1,

"FOR ALL SEASONS"
The. dramatised story of his life, "A Man for all Seasons", has had a remarkable run in the English-speaking lands on the stage and on the screen. He has become a man for all time. Someone has rightly hailed him as "born for friendship" and that could be his worthy epitaph. 0 Lord, let there be joy in our hearts, and a smile on our lips to lighten the burdens of life for ourselves and for others. weer

MEMORIES OF PRIESTLY MUSICIAN I write this as a personal expression of my gratitude for and appreciation of the help and guidance given to me by Father A lbert Lynch.
My first association with Father Albert was in my seminary days at Guildford in the late 1940's and early 1950's. He gave us regular lessons in sacred music, particularly in Gregorian Chant. His own deep love for plainsong stirred my own understanding and appreciation for this form of music. In 1953, he trained the seminarians to sing Vespers in St. Mary's Cathedral for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. In later years. when I was preparing for a trip overseas, he gave me very detailed directions to visit the Abbey of Solesmes, near Paris, which has been the centre of the modern revival of plainsong.
AT ST. MARY'S
During my study of theology at St. Patrick's College. Manly (N.S.W.), Iwas placed in charge of the college choir.
• Memories of the late Father Albert Lynch, the renowned West Australian musician and priest, who died last week, are enshrined in the pictures on this page and in this appreciation written by Father PATRICK AHERN, a former director of St. Mary's Cathedral Choir, which was founded by the eminent priestly master of music. Father Albert again helped me considerably when I returned home on holidays. On Easter Sunday, 1961, I took over the direction of St. Mary's Cathedral Choir from Father Peter McCudden. Many people including Father McCudden and Annette Goerke, were a great help to me, but I returned continually to my old mentor, Father Albert Lynch. In February, 1962, the Cathedral Choir was invited to take part in a Festival of Religious Music as part of the Festival of Perth. Since the programme consisted largely of polyphonic music, I appealed desperately to Father Albert for help. He trained the choir
regularly for several months and, even though I invited him to conduct the actual concert, he declined because I was the choir director. His deep humanity on that occasion made a lasting impression.
PERFECTIONIST When the liturgy changed into the vernacular in the mid-1960's, Father Albert again came to the rescue with
his many compositions, written expressly for our Cathedral Choir. Always a perfectionist, he was my greatest critic but in a very positive and helpful manner. I visited him often, and listened to his compositions in the making. He even invited my criticism of his own work.
GRACIOUS
He was a gracious host and I enjoyed being his guest. Even when answering the telephone he was most polite and gracious. Whatever success I achieved in my thirteen years as director of St. Mary's Cathedral Choir was due, under God, to the help, guidance and patience of many people, but particularly to my dear friend and mentor4 Father Albert Lynch. May his generous and humble soul rest in peace. w w
