VATICAN CITY (NC). — "Hitler is having his revenge" through liberalised abortion legislation in Western nations, the Vatican daily newspaper charged last month. The front-page article in "L'Osservatore Romano' was one of the harshest of many recent attacks by the Vatican on liberalised abortion. Liberalised abortion legislation, said the paper, 'is not progress, but a regression into barbarism." "Hitler is having his revenge through the abortion legislation of Western nations."

KALGOORLIE MAN PROFESSED

Brother Phillip Reilly, M.S.C. was finally professed recently as a Missionary of the Sacred Heart, at St. Mary's Towers Douglas Park. Phillip who, is the eldest of five children and the onlY son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Reilly of Kalgoorlie, was educated by the Sisters of St. Joseph. and the Christian. Brothers in Kalgoorlie. He entered the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in 1970, and after the completion of his novitiate, took first vows in 1973. He is now stationed at the Order's Retreat House at Douglas Park, New South Wales.

aCrleu.ne was born in County Clare on January 6, 1864, not long after the second Perth Cathedral was started. He was a year old when it was opened. He fondly remembered this Benedictine-built structure as the scene of his first public appearance in W.A. as a Redemptorist preacher in 1899. Here again on March 17, 1911, Cardinal Moran raised him to the episcopate in the presence of many well wishers. These included Archbishop Redwood of Wellington, a friend from his N.Z. days. Now aged 88 years, and then the oldest Catholic Archbishop in the world, Dr. Redwood had come to Perth again to join his old friend in starting this project in 1926. We see him in the accompanying picture seated at the right hand of Dr. Clune as Archbishop Mannix captivates the large crowd with his witty oratory. Six archbishops and five bishops most of whom had attended the opening of Adelaide Cathedral on the previous Sunday, had come to Perth for the stone-laying ceremony. The day's celebrations had commenced with a High Mass at 11 a.m. in the old cathedral. In the accompanying picture (on page 7) we see Archbishop Robert Spence, of Adelaide, the chief celebrant, seated at the faldstool facing the congregation. The preacher in the pulpit was Bishop Richard Ryan of Sale. He had been transferred from Geraldton Diocese the previous month. A choir of 200 voices, the pick of the parishes from Midland to Fremantle, sang at this Mass. With Mr. V. A. Taylor as organist, and Mr. Sydney Smith conducting, they sang Odorado Barn's Mass in C for the first time in W.A. A special composition by Don Moreno, O.S.B. of New Norcia was sung at the Offertory. Noted canon lawyer urges equality for women in the Church

HARTFORD (NC). — Discrimination against women in the Catholic Church is a "disservice to the Church, the people it serves, and more importantly, the Gospel," a noted canon lawyer said here. J. Thomas Father Lynch, former president of the Canon Law Society of America, suggested in an interview that the top Church leadshould change ership Church law to recognise the equality of women. "There must be strong efforts by responsible officials to rid the laws of any anti-women bias, and construct a new law which does recognise Christian women's equality with Christian men," he said. Father Lynch, said that universal Church law was codified in 1918, when "the place of women in society was so

different than it is now." Many of the Church views on women were "a throwback to the European-Latin mentality" of female subservience, he added. The most serious discrimination against women involved the limitations placed on their service to the Church, Father Lynch said. While the ban on ordination as priests had received the most attention, exclusion of women from serving on marriage tribunals and from holding minor orders might be more important symbols of Church attitudes, he said.
