The Pope told crowds gathered in St. Peter's Square on March 7 for the Sunday Angelus that his retreat would be "a preparation for Easter and a preparation for death, which cannot be too far off for us." The 78-year-old Pontiff suffers from a painful but not alarming arthritic condition. His health is generally very good. In his talk before reciting the Angelus, Pope Paul decried today's "religious illiteracy," and lack of prayer. "Many people who think they are being progressive and adult in thought and behaviour have turned themselves off to prayer," the Pope said. "It is tolerated by many others only as one

PAST - No. 22 OF THE OUTCatholics in the Gosnells district were
spiritually cared for by the priest from Victoria Park prior to 1917.
In that year, Gosnells, Armadale, and Jarrandale were formed into a separate parish with Father Tom O'Grady as first parish priest. This Father O'Grady died in 1926 whilst parish priest of Jarrandale — Dwellingnp. On March 2, 1919, Archbishop Clune blessed and opened St. Munchin's wooden church, Gosnells. It is now the parish hall there. The contract price was £750 ($1,500) and as on many similar occasions the opening was marked by the presence and playing of Father Tom Crowley's Highgate Irish Pipers under Pipe-Major Calvin. In 1922 Gosnells came under the direction of Father Finnegan of Queen's Park. Finally, in March, 1949, it became a separate parish under Father Patrick J. Carmody. Before there was a church in the area local Catholics used to attend Mass, starting monthly in 1910, in a large room near the stables at the rear of Molly Ryder's Gosnells Hotel. The altar for the occasion was built up of hay bales, or wooden boxes which used to hold two four gallon tins of fuel. This photo was taken in 1924 outside these stables. The occasion was the St. Patrick's Day sports being run on the adjoining Sports Ground. In the picture we have Father Finnegan in the front, row with the member for the district, Mr. Richard Sampan, M.L.A., on his right. This photo was loaned for copying by Mrs. Stella McNamara of Redcliffe. First from the left front row is her late husband Leo. Seventh from the left is her father. and a district pioneer the late Jack Benson. The only person still unidentified in the archives copy is the lady second from the left in the back row.
