Miss Nittoreda intends to direct her catechetical remarks at her listeners, reasoning that teachers cannot do for others what they have not been through themselves in the experiential field of and living Christian understanding. Miss Margaret GOMES has just arrived in Perth to join the local Pastoral Institute. She will head the Institute's department looking after the religious education units now being offered in the t eacher training colleges. -

At solemn ceremonies on Christmas morning, cardinals sealed up the Holy Doors at Rome's other major basilicas St. John Lateran, St. Mary Major and St. Paul Outside-the-Walls. Addressing about 90,000 pilgrims during the homily of the Mass televised around the world, the Pope said that the New Covenant Holy Year linked with God "our concrete, historical and Only four weeks re- civil life, whether negative, main till school re- skeptical, aberrant and incommences. different, or pious and faithful."

PHILADELPHIA (NC). — Mobile vans have begun providing auxiliary services to Catholic school children here.

A Supreme Court decision handed down in May outlawed such services when rendered on Catholic Church property. The first of the bans began pulling up to Philadelphia Catholic schools in mid-December and started screening children for educational or psychological deficiencies. Following the decision which the court handed down in the Meek vs. Pittenger case, the Pennsylvania legislature rushed the new law through to provide the mobile facilities. The

court ruling barred the expenditure of State funds "on the premises of non - public the schools." The mobile units will also be used to provide counselling, guidance, remedial mathematics and reading assistance.

which has a contract with the Philadelphia school district to provide such services. Another Pennsylvania Bill recently signed into law will permit the 7,000 Catholic school children who suffer from speech and hearing defects to receive therapy on the premises of their schools. The Act provides State funding of on-site diagnostic and corrective services, specifically classifying these as health services, thus eliminating the need to transport the children to non-religious locations.

RIO DE JANEIRO, (NC) — More than 1,000 prisoners were released under a nationwide Christmas pardon granted by President Ernesto Geisel of Brazil to honour the Holy Year and heed the call to reconciliation by Pope Paul. The government decree, acknowledging reliigous motivations, went to all Brazil's State Governors and military commanders for action before Christmas. Cardinal Eugenio Sales of Rio de Janeiro, visited the main area gaols during December. He said Mass and preached to hundreds of inmates at penitentiaries in here and in nearby Evaristo Moraes.

SAND FILLS World Council DOOR LOCK of Churches has budget problems

NAIROBI (NC).— The World Council of Churches' fifth assembly heard several proposals on how to extricate the worldwide body from an anticipated 1976 deficit of more than $1 million out of its $3.3 million general budget. In September, almost on the eve of its 17-day meeting at the Kenyatta Conference Centre here, WCC officers ordered drastic and immediate cuts from the general budget. The general budget is ' distinct from six other budgets, which appear to be healthy. The general budget is financed from the central treasuries of most of its 271 member-churches — Protestant, Anglican, Eastern Orthodox and Old Catholic — which have a combined total of more than 400 million adherents. It supports the WCC's general secretariat, its New York office, the main meetings of governing bodies, the ecumenical centre at Bossey, Switzerland, several commissions and segments of other activities such as the controversial Programme to Combat Racism. The cuts ordered in September amounted to approximately $600,000 and included reducing expenditures of the Communication Department, and withholding of automatic salary increases for WCC staff.

The presbytery roof began to lift at 3 a.m. during the height of Cyclone Joan on the morning of December 8. Rain damaged the interior fittings of the house. Father Hickling took off to the church, which stood up well to the storm but sand had filled the lock of the front door so he stayed huddled by its walls for the next six hours. Later, inside the building they were relieved to find only light water damage to the ceiling and to some roofing iron.

MOST ROOMS A FFECTED One-third of the Presentation convent roof was lost and the ceiling damaged in other areas_ The contents of the front parlour and carpeting were ruined. Both old and new school buildings were damaged by the storm. one brick wall falling in: sand and rain managed to penetrate most rooms. Fortunately, a new library resource centre, opened only oh November 16, suffered only light damage from driving sand and light flying debris. A parish house was completely demolished by the storm. Closer to the port area, the Seafarers' Centre, which is run jointly by the Catholic, Anglican and United Churches was totally unroofed and all the interior fittings and stock w ere damaged.

Does sleep help restore the body after exercise? Deep sleep helps to restore the mind after energetic mental w ork — but does it also help to restore the body after tiring exercise, Dr. Jim Horne. of the University of Loughborough near Liecester (English Midlands), who has b een carrying out research into sleep patterns, recently published his findings which were outlined on BBC World Service. Several laboratories have tried to answer the question, with varying and confusing results. The results varied, Dr. Horne decided, because the experimenters were using experimental subjects who were in widely-varying states of physical fitness, and because the exercise was taken at different times of day in different experiments.

DIFFERENT TIMES OF DAY I

n his experiments his subjects, who took their exercise by riding a stationary bicycle, it for just 40 each rode per cent of the time for which earlier tests had shown each particular person was ca.

pable of riding without becoming exhausted. This meant that different subjects rode the bicycle for different times, but all were tired by it to approximately the same degree. Dr. Horne also measured the effects of this exercise on the subjects' sleep when they rode the bicycle in the morning and in the afternoon, and compared the results.

rhythms, but they spent less time in deep sleep than usual in the second half of the night.

RECOVERY

Dr. Horne considers that this indicates that peoples' bodies recover from exercise in much the same way whether the person is awake or asleep. So, if exercise is taken in the morning, then recovery is complete by the evening and has no AFTERNOON effect on sleep. The results showed 'But if the exercise is that after exercise in the morning, there was no taken during the afterchange in sleeping pat- noon, then recovery conterns the next night at tinues during the first half of the night. all. This is the final instalment on the new rite of the Sacrament of Penance that has appeared in the last two issues of The Record. Following the decrees of the Second Vatican Council that closed ten years ago, all the sacramental rites have been revised and renewed. The most significant reform was in the liturgy of the Eucharist, especially in the liturgy of the Word. All the sacramental rites now have a similar liturgy of the Word, with a strong emphasis on community participation. The renewed Sacrament of Penance, although coming at the end of the ten-year reform, has re-instated the liturgy of the Word in its celebration and given greater prominence to community celebrations of penance. The prayers and formula for the revised individual rite, with explanatory photographs appeared in the Christmas issue of The Record (December 25). The text that follows is that of the Introduction to the new rite; comments in italics are supplied by The Record.

that confession before another general absolution may be received by the penitent. General absolution was always available theoretically in emergencies such as time of war, etc.; the practice was given further specific approval in a new Roman decree, June, 1972. Practically, general absolution can be used only in circumstances approved by the bishop and, so far, the Australian Bishops have not defined the general conditions that will apply in this country.

Europe has an image that is all of its own, principally because its skyline is dotted with the spires of churches. It is not a merely theoretical argument asking whether the churches are full or empty. It is a proclamation of the truth that the men who shaped those cities saw a church as a living monument in the midst of everyday life. Europe has discovered that its churches are the drawcards for tourists. But not only to the big cathedrals and basilicas do the people go. Anywhere the bus or train stops, the tourist finds himself looking at a church steeple; his curiosity calls him to look inside and it is always a gem of one sort or another. The Catholic World Tour is not a religious tour in terms of a pilgrimage. But it is Catholic because it will look at the many places that have become significant in the faith and history of Catholics. The local people won't dress up just because they have heard that you are coming. But like their churches, they have prized the customs and ways of the past. The older village men and women have tucked away their festive dresses that are w orn on special days. A tour is not just a jaunt through a dead past; it is an experience of the living history that has been handed down.

New South Wales dominated national tennis carnival.

New South Wales players dominated the Australian Catholic Lawn Tennis Association carnival held in Sydney over the ChristmasNew Year period. .1-he West Australian team was not prominent, but it was not expected that it would be, as the team was not as strong as some of those iielded in past years. New South Wales won the Archbishop Kelly Shield for the aggregate of successes in the men's and ladies events. It also won the P. J. O'Shea Shield, for the winning men's team, and the Archbishop Duhig Shield, for the winning ladies' team. Its success was repeated in the awards for individual performances, in which it won all the trophies except one. The Bob Taylor Memorial Trophy for the outstanding man player was won by John May (N.S.W.) and the Mayf Priddis Memorial Trophy for the outstanding lady
