Beloved sons and daughters in Jesus Christ, Today the Church in Perth is gathered together as one people. You are one Wrth your Archbishop and you are united with the universal Church. The 'Lord Jesus is in your midst. And as his Vicar, we are happy to express our own closeness with you in the unity of faith and in the love of Christ. We ore pleased that through your Marian Crusade you have been rendering special honour to the Blessed Virgin. And today your observance reaches its full expression as you celebrate with particular solemnity the Immaculate Conception, commemorating with the whole Church a twofold event of immense importance: "the basic preparation for the coming of Christ, and the happy beginning of the Church without spot or wrinkle" (Marialis Cultus, 3). Yes, we are eager that all our sons and daughters throughout the world should meditate on the intimate relationship that exists between the Church and Mary, and between the mystery of Christ and the role of his Mother. And we pray that you will be spurred on to an even deeper appreciation of all the prerogatives and privileges of her who is the exemplar and type of the Church, and Mother of oil the faithful who are in Pictured above is a proud moment in the memorable day of his Christ. May your meditation and your piety lead all episcopal ordination when Bishop Healy walked down from the altar in of you to continue to seek, in a concrete St. Mary's Cathedral to give the sign of peace to his mother who had way, Mary's intercession, e s pe cial ly t ravelled from Ireland specially for the occasion. through the Angelus and her holy Rosary. HISTORIC OCCASION IN CITY GARDENS

•

This was the scene (at left) the Crusade for Mary Mass in the Supreme Court gardens on Monday evening. Framed against the orchestral shell that houses the choir, can be seen the 12 concelebrant bishops, floodlit on a raised altar dais. At the foot of the steps can be seen the commencement of the ranks of nearly 200 priests who also concelebrated the Mass. Freeman Cardinal (centre) is principal celebrant, flanked by Archbishop Goody. At the extreme left and right of the bishops, stand Bishop Healy and Abbot Rooney respectively. servers were Altar members of St. Stephen's Guild from Queens Park Parish.

Europe has an image that is all of its own, principally because its skyline is dotted with the spires of churches. It is not a merely theoretical argument asking whether the churches are full or empty. It is a proclamation of the truth that the men who shaped those cities saw a church as a living monument in the midst of everyday life. Europe has discovered that its churches re the drawcards for tourists. But not only to the big cathedrals and basilicas do the people go. Anywhere the bus or train stops, the tourist finds himself looking at a church steeple; his curiosity calls him to look inside and it is always a gem of one sort or another. The Catholic World Tour is not a religious tour in terms of a pilgrimage. But it is Catholic because it will look at the many places that have become significant in the faith and history of Catholics. The local people won't dress up just because they have heard that you are coming. But like their churches, they have prized the customs and ways of the past. The older village men and women hove tucked away their festive dresses that are worn on special days. A tour is not just a jaunt through a dead 'past; it is an experience of the living history that has been handed down.

tennis there in such a healthy state and very pleasing also to find so many young people participating. The visitors were made to feel most _welcome and despite - the very hot conditions, some enjoyable games were played in a very friendly atmosphere. During the afternoon t ea break the president of the Northam club, Mr. John Roach, formally welcomed his guests and indicated his pleasure that personal contact had again been reestablished with the W.A.C.L.T.A. in Perth.

Mr. Bryan Kukura, thanked Northam for their hospitality and supported Mr. Roach's remarks about the Archbishop's Shield.

MOVES FOR EXPANSION He said that a concerted effort was now being made to increase all Catholic tennis activities, both metropolitan and country, and all macountry centres jor would be approached shortly with a view to re-establishing contact and resuming their participation in any future country championsips. It is hoped that further trips of this nature by groups of players from the W.A.C.L.T.A. will take place during the season.
