and lay workers

After his recent years of close contact with the clergy Bishop-elect Healy sees a lot of enthusiasm and dedication among the younger priests. He believes that they are developing links with older priests that did not exist in the past when a young priest kept very much to his own peer group. "The benefit of this trend is more for the clergy themselves," he says, "although the laity also comment on how well the young priests are treated and accepted, compared with older times. "The new style of life where the priesthood is less formally structured puts a strain on the priest and he has to adjust to a greater sense of responsibility and initiative.' About future vocations he commented that it was a fact of life that older men who had spent some time working were coming into the priesthood in increasing numbers. "It was probably always a possibility but we didn't look for it," he noted.

There are even greater prospects for priestly and other ministerial vocations, according to the new bishop. "We don't fully realise what the present new emergency ministry of acolyte is really going to do to the archdiocese in a few years," he said. "It is focussing on the new role of the laity and the effect that this new ministry is having on the lives of individual men is tremendous to see," he said. The growth of the laity into the life of the Church has been an event in his own 26 year lifetime of priesthood. "I once suggested to Prendiville Archbishop that the YCW leader training groups were a waste of time and he reminded me that we would see the benefit in 20 years' time," he said. "But we have to convince the laity of their need for further education and formation be-

cause there is everywhere an expression of a deeper and more personal faith that needs to be catered for in programmes of adult education and spiritual formation." He said that the laity had come from an age when all their ideas of faith were categorised and were finding now that they had to re-think their attitudes. "It is a significant thing that there is today a Bible in the vast majority of our homes and we will have to rely on our families a great deal more to transmit faith to their children both by their attention to the Word of God and to the truths taught by the Church," he added. The new programmes of confirmation, penance and eucharist that had been introduced recently were probably signs of where the future of the in activity Church's spreading the faith lay, the bishop-elect observed.

Prelate's request to priests

W ASHINGTON, (NC).— Archbishop William W. Baum of Washington has asked the archdiocesan Senate of Priests "to undertake a renewal of our apostolic consciousness" by an examination of the ministry of evangelisation and the ministry of caring for the presence of the Holy Spirit in Catholics.

The second of three evening sessions devoted to special l iturgica l topics and sponsored by the W.A. Liturgical Comrni sion drew an attendance of 104 at Trinity College last Tuesda y night. The Liturgy of the Word was dealt with theologically by Fr. Daniel Baldwin, Capuchin, who was followed by Brother John Baldwin, discussing practical steps to improve such liturgy in the parish, and in conclusion Father Christopher Ross, described possibilities for making the actual liturgy more meanin gful to the congregation. Sixty people attended an earlier session on children's liturgie Sister Joan Smith, and members of the Nedlands parish liturgy s that was presented by Father Ken Peterson, Carmel ite, committee who conduct a special children's liturgy each Sunday. • Armadale attended both sessions in force and Father Geoff Beyer is pictured right in discussion with some of 'his parish liturgy committee. •••••••••••#.41 , s,"•••~#4p4p.".#.4.#####•••####~4,..."•••••••••

Pope prays for peace in Lebanon VATICAN CITY (NC). — Pope Paul has told Lebanon's new Ambassador to the Vatican that he suffers with the victims of civil violence in Lebanon and is praying for permanent peace in that country. The Lebanese people, the Pope observed in receiving the credentials of Ambassador Boutros Dib, "are living through grave events." Speaking French, the Pope noted: "The Holy See never spares its efforts during a conflict. "Is it not the Church's mission to contribute to

Pope Pius IX put the Diocese of Perth under the special patronage and protection of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary on April 30, 1854. The Pope wrote the attestation granting the petition of Bishop Serra with his own band. This would have made Perth among the first diocese in the world honoured with this Patronage. With the announcement of a second auxiliary for the Archdiocese of Perth it is of some passing interest to note that there were three Bishops attached to Perth Diocese over one hundred and twenty years ago. All three of those Bishops were known devotees of the Mother of God.
