The renowned pioneer of the Servite Order in Australia, Father James M. Keane, 0.S.M,, has died at the hospital of the Servite Sisters in Ladysmith, Wisconsin, U.S.A., after an illness the result of several road accidents. Father Keane arrived in W.A. on -November 30, 1951, to take charge of the parish of Wanneroo. He departed in August the following year but left an indelible memory among followers of the Perpetual Novena of Out Lady of Sorrows. There have been few men in the Order in this century who have had as great an impact on its spirit and destiny as has Father Keane. In 1937, as war was looming over Europe, he compiled and promoted the famous Novena of the Sorrowful Mother. Its popularity was instantaneous.
40,000 A DAY
Every Friday in those early years, as many as 40.000 people would come all through the day for novena services to the Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows on the west side of Chicago. Soon other churches took it up and eventually this famous novena spread to almost every conceivable country in the world and the prayer booklet was translated into many languages, including Chinese. The interest which the
founder and his assOciates had awakened led them to make a colour film on the Liturgy of the Mass, called "The Eternal Gift." It is noteworthy that this and similar -novenas were harbingers of community participation at Mass by the common recitation of prayers and the mutual expression of Intentions that they employed.
IN IRELAND A fter the war, Father Keane became the guiding light for the establishment of the Servite Order in Ireland, a country where they had not existed in their 700 years of histota . In Co. Tyrone, where the O'Neil Castle marks the site of the Battle of Benburb, he founded a priory that today is a place of peace and ecumenical prayer in tense Northern Ireland. While a consultor to the priorageneral, he entered into negotiation, with Archbishop PrendiOle to come to Australia. He wrote: "This is a great opportunity for our Order.
"There is perhaps no other city in the whole world that is growing with the speed of Perth . . . . Our labours today can grow into a foundation as great as Our Lady of Sorrows in Chicago "As I see it, this opportunity is a great grace from Our Lady. All we need do is work with industry, intelligence and vision." He made a mark in the many parishes of Perth where he founded the Sorrowful Mother Novena, sharing his insight in the role of Mary in God's plan of salvation.

He returned to America and for several years took part -in a weekly telecast on Mary. He also spent some of his later years in Ireland where his interest never w aned. Religious programmes; the "humanistic influence" The protest of Bishop Edward Clancy, which was among several others by churchmen, at the reported proposal to drop religious programmes on the A.B.C., concentrated on the suggestion for elimination of the statutory requirement for radio and television stations to provide these programmes. Bishop Clancy, auxiliary to Cardinal Freeman, is the Australian Catholic Bishops' Deputy in charge of the National Catholic Radio and Television Centre at Homebush. Other church leaders have also reacted strongly to the proposal by a *orking party of the Deartment of the Media. Bishop Clancy issued a _ atement on the proposal. He said: "I view with grave concern the recommendation by the working party on broadcasting that the statutory requirement for radio and television to provide religious programmes should be dropped.

provides for religious programmes. -This being an Act of Parliament, it is presumably the will of the people. "The move to alter the Act comes not from the people but from another of those small minorities which seem to carry more weight than the majority in our current version of democracy."
