MORE COUNTRIES CONTRIBUTING TO MISSIONS The most important aspect of an indicated increase in Propagation of the Faith contributions was that more and more countries were now contributing, a Rome report has revealed.

Monsignor Douglas Stewart, Australian National Missions director, noted this fact from the report he had heard at the recent Paris meeting of all the Aid Mission Pontificial societies. Figures tabled at the meeting indicated that the world total of Catholic contributions for 1974 was expected to be around $US48 million, an increase of five per cent on the 1973 total. _ It was pointed out that the floating values of many world currencies made it hard to estimate the figure accurately in terms of real or only apparent increase.

CARDINAL'S PROTEST

LONDON (NC). — Cardinal John Heenan of Westminster, has released a letter from him to Prime Minister Harold Wilson, protesting governmental discrimination against doctors who oppose abortion. In the letter, Cardinal Heenan said that gynaecologists, anesthetists and conscienpsychiatrists tiously opposed to abortion were effectively being given notice "that they have no future in the National Health Service" by a Department of Health and Social Security memorandum earlier this year stating that doctors with conscientious objections to abortion should not be appointed to certain posts as consultants un&r the NHS. The letter was dated June 9 but not made public until July 22. It was released with Mr. Wilson's agreement.

ROME, (N.C.) — For the 24th year in succession, a White Train carrying over 1,300 pilgrims, one-third of them priests and half of those sick, left Rome's Ostiense Station last week for the 30-hour journey to Lourdes. White Trains get their name from the numbers of white-gowned nuns and nurses who care for the sick passengers. Hundreds of them traverse Italy each year. bring; ing the sick and infirm to their beloved shrines. What made this year's train special is that it carried the annual pilgrimage to Lourdes of priests, the infirm ones and their well brothers \Nr ho cared for them. They came mainly from Italy, but other countries were represented, and a group comes each year from the United States. This White Train is one of many aids to the sick provided by Msgr. Lutgt Novarese and the volunteers he has organised and leads. The core of the organisation is a group of priests dedicated to the sick. Let more church and convent bells be rung to remind us to pray the "Angelus". Let there be explanations and exhortations from our pulpits for the deeper understanding of the Christ-centred mysteries of the Rosary and opportunities to recite this prayer together — say, before or after Holy Mass. This letter does not seek to spell out a precise programme for the ;;;; cf Marian devotion; it is an attempt to encourage all, priests and people, to seek and promote ways of doing so. A campaign will be organised between now and Christmas; I beg that all try to co-operate according to their circumstances.

'LET US NEVER FORGET HER'

Finally, it is often said that Catholic devotion to Mary is a derogation of the worship due to Christ and an occasion for disagreement among Christians. How untrue the first of these assertions is should be clear from what we have said before. As regards the latter, at the recent Marialogical Congress held in Rome, representatives of two Orthodox Churches, of three Lutheran Churches and of the Reformed Church of Switzerland, together with the Catholic delegates, defended the practice of offering prayers of intercession to Mary because of "the fact that Mary remains always linked" to the work of the redemption and therefore to its application "across time and space". May, therefore, Mary the creature "all beautiful", the "mirror without spot", may this "woman clothed with the sun" always intercede for us. INTEREST SUBSIDY As a result of negotiations with' the State 0Cover cla : ment, it has been agreed that the interest subsidy which has hitherto been provided on interest payable on loans raised for the construction of "classrooms," which are partially funded by a Commonwealth Grant, will bine tehxetended to all loans raised for the construction rooms, provided (a) there is a proven educational need for the facilities, (b) the building standards are within the guidelines adopted by the Schools Commission and (c) the project would be recommended by the State Priorities Committee for assistance if finance were avail. able. The decision will apply retrospectively from July I, 1974 and schools which have been refused a subsidy on the ground that the project was not included Schools Commission programme will be eligible to re apply. A study released by the Swiss Catholic Mission Council in Berne has estimated a world population of 6,126 million by the year 2,000 and a Christian population of 1,914 million, most of them living in Third World countries. Africa, Asia, Latin America and Oceania will have 58.5 per cent of all those professing Christian religions, the study says. In 1900, a century earlier, these continents had only 14.5 per cent while the industrialised nations had 85.5 per cent of the world's Christian population. The study adds that the growth rate in the number of Christians has slowed down in comparison with the total population growth.

originally from Sydney, has spent 15 of his 27 years as a Christian Brother in Western Australia, first at Aquinas College and, concluding last year, six years as headmaster of C.B.C.. Geraldton. before being appointed to Fremantle at the beginning of this year.
