• The twelfth in a series of articles by BROTHER PETER ST. JOHN, Coordinator of Religious Education, on religious education in the home and school
"Teaching Our Children to Pray" is the title of a simple, attractively written booklet by Helen Lee. The time to start thinking about prayers for children, in Helen Lee's opinion, is when you are thinking of having children. each children to pray in their own language and styl . Dr. Brusselman's basic message is, "Parents be what you are, and being what you are will bring Christ to your child. Your love, affection, security, care will do it." In this book, she emphasises the importance of the parents' role in pre-school, religious education with the home as the classroom. The focus is on the parents' response to the religious needs of children. An extensive, practical question and answer section is included to provide specific information. Jeannine Schmid applies the Montessori method of education to the religious education of the young child. The book explains many practical means of providing human experiences for your child which will be very valuable as a foundation for understanding doctrine and Catholic beliefs later in life.
Education File CONVERSION COURSES FOR TEACHERS Commencing in 1975, the constituent teachers colleges of the West Australian Teacher Education Authority will be offering conversion courses for two-year trained teachers to permit them to update their professional quail& cations, gain the status of three-year trained teachers and achieve the Award of Diploma of Teaching, which now has national recognition through the Australian Council on Awards in Advanced Education. Offered initially in 1975 as a part-time or full-time course, in subsequent years it will be conducted also on an external basis. Students wishing to enrol for the Conversion Course in 1975 should contact immediately the college or colleges of their choice for full information regarding units available. All enquiries should be addressed to the "Admissions Officer" at the particular college. The addresses are: Churchlands Teachers College, Pearson Street. Churchlands 6018. Telephone 87 5999. LIBRARY STATIONERY Requisition forms are being reprinted for Education Supplies Branch, but probably will not be ready this year. However, duplicated sheets setting out the library stationery available have been attached to requisition forms for November, December, January and February. As with other items, the order for library stationery is a "once-a-year" order. Commercial firms should be eon-tacted for additional supplies. One such firm, Raeco Library Equipment, has set up a Perth branch under manager Peter Wickham. at 76 King's Park Road, West Perth. Telephone 21 9853. Schools must refrain from asking School Library Service (Library Services Branch) for supplies. The superintendent and staff are wonderfully helpful to our schools in many ways. and should not be embarrassed by such requests.
CATECHETICS Catechetical Co-ordinators in Catholic primary schools are invited to a meeting on Thursday, November 14, at 1.30 p.m. at 45 Tyrell Street, Nedlands. The guest speaker, Deacon David O'Brien, will speak on "Media Education in the Christian School.'
CHILD MIGRANT SERVICES Mr. John Sherwood, of Mount Lawley Teachers' College, has set up a committee including Mrs. Rosemary Tang. the C.E.C.'s Co-ordinator of Child Migrant Services, Mr. Barry Henson, Migrant Education Advisory Teacher in the State Education Department, Fr. G. Alivines of Mazenod College, and Mr. Alex Lutero, of Tuart Hill, High School to plan the special course in migrant education to be implemented at the college next year. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Australia's recognition of Soviet annexation Perpetual Rosary for Holy Year; volunteers wanted Sir,
The correspondence from Father O'Brien and J. P. Shanahan, in relation to the Australian Government's diplomatic recognition of the Baltic States as part of the Soviet Union, needs to be answered and, in my judgement, is a further example of the woolly-minded "excuserating" so evident within a section of the Church of recent time.
UNDERTAKER BEATS THE MAILS
VATICAN CITY (NC) It is not uncommon for the undertaker to beat the Italian mails, an Indian archbishop told the Synod. Archbishop Padiyafa observed that mail from Rome came to India only after very long delays. It was possible, for aample. that a document about the dissolution of a marriage was received after the bond has already been dissolved by God through, the death of the husband or wife, the archbishop said. Referring to the destruction of letters by Italian Post Office erx, ployees, the archbishop said: "The Tiber river has already begun to taste the sweetness of letters." With the M.C.C. team in Australia and the Sheffield Shield competition, "big" cricket has returned to Australia with great momentum,
Denness is still "settling in" as leader and he will have as his manager the formidable personality of the great Alec Bedser. There is no Englishman now associated with, :the game, except possibly Sir Leonard Hutton, who knows as much about Australian •Test cricket as Bedser and he is a personable, popular and exciting personality. It has been suggested that he might "dominate" Denness, but it. is more likely that his advice and assistance to the England captain will be more in the nature of paternal encouragement than "interference." Anyway, if Bedser has a big hand in running the show, it will not come amiss and it will not be new; for Jardine when example, brought out his now famous "body line" team, the Legendary Pelham (later Sir Pelham and always known as "Plum" Warner, was manager and very much a power behind the throne.
