It is a horror movie — or, if you prefer, a "terror" movie — against a religious background.I do not believe that it will have any permanent religious impact. I am being asked whether I recommend that people see 'The Exorcist.' " 'The Exorcist' is an extremely well-made film — a director's film with its emphasis on make-up, special effects, camerawork and editing. The performances, although secondary, are most effective.

DUBLIN (NC)—A Ford Foundation grant of about $4,600 has been awarded to Jesuit Father Michael MacGreil for his research on the nature of prejudice and intolerance among Irish Catholics and Protestants. Altogether the study will cost nearly $30,000, and is supported by the Catholic Communications Institute of Ireland. Father MacGreil holds degrees in sociology and anthropology. His study of the attitude of Catholic and Protestant adults in Ireland is expected to be completed by the end of 1975. He is expected to interview 3.000 persons in an effort to discover possible sources of prejudice. Father MacGreil said that he hoped his findings would contribute to a better understanding between different groups in the country. He said that he had found already that the vast majority of people wanted greater harmony and friendship in Ireland.

Moral education programmes for schools

TORONTO ( NC ).—The Ontario Ministry of Education is directing public school boards across Ontario to begin discussions among parents, teachers and school trustees and to form committees to propose guidelines for moral - education programmes within the public school system. According to Ontario Education Minister Thomas Wells, this new emphasis on moral education could include the teaching of specific religion course electives for intermediate and senior students in public schools.

NEW YORK (NC). — At this point in the ecumenical movement occasional inter-Communion between Catholics and Protestants "is not, in principle, out of the question" and Catholics "would be unwilling to declare today . . . that Anglican or Protestant ministeries are null and void," a widely-known Jesuit theologian declared here. Speaking at the National Workshop for Christian Unity, Father Avery Dulles, of Woodstock College, New York cited the broad range of ecumenical accord reached in recent years, the vastly increased incidence of Catholics and Protestants praying together and a heightened desire for unity among Christians. "The ecumenical theologian cannot help but rejoice at the signs that many of the faithful sense that there is something wrong about the existing denominational barriers," Father Dulles said. "This discontent rests on a valid theological insight: There is, and can only be one Church of Christ and this one Church is not adequately identical with any of the (existing) ecclesiastical organisations."

Challenge

Father Dulles said that ecumenical leaders were -challenged to work out principles of membership and communion that cut across the existing division. "Never in history has there been a series of ecumenical accords comparable to those achieved in the past five years or so." At the same time he argued against the feeling among some that one church was as good as another. This position, he said, "strikes me as so improbable as to be virtually absurd." "We must not shrink from the responsibility of confessing our beliefs openly before others," he added, "though we must, of course, respect their religious freedom and their right to follow their own consciences.

He praised the charismatic movement for building bridges between Catholics and some of the conservative evangelical groups, which he said have held themselves aloof from the ecumenical movement. "It is an incontestable fact that in many charismatic groups Protestants and Catholics pray together," he continued. -In this common prayer they experience a deep communion in Christ, and this experience goes far to undermine the walls of prejudice that have hitherto divided churches." On communion between various Churches,

"Because Christians do share so much in spite of their denominational separations, it may sometimes be proper to provide for interCommunion," he said. "Occasions for this might arise in the course of a period of special prayer for Christian unity, or when two Christians of different denominations are being united in the sacrament of matrimony."
