Easing of Tension?
VATICAN CITY (NC). — Pope Paul has praised a study plan of Latin American Foreign Ministers to devote part of their armaments allocations to human development. The Pope said that he had proposed such a plan "on repeated occasions — and had called on all nations to dedicate part of their defense monies to works of human promotion and development." The Pope first proposed setting up a world fund to clothe,
feed and give medical care to the needy in his encounter with the international Press in Bombay, on December 4, 1964, and repeated the idea in his 1967 encyclical, on the development of peoples.

Speaking to journalists at the Eucharistic Congress in India, the Pope gave them his "special message for the world." In his cable to the Foreign Ministers in Mexico City, the Pope said he offered "fervent hopes" and "prayers to the Almighty" that the decisions of the ministers would indeed alleviate suffering in the world.

ROME (NC). — Divorce was an evil in Italy that must be remedied, but its repeal must not become a war of religion, the permanent council of the Italian bishops said in a pastoral directive which has been made public. The directive called on Italian Christians and all men of goodwill to reinforce the sanctity of the family and the indissolubility of the marriage sacrament. Referring to the confrontation in the nation between partisan political elements and the Church should the divorce law come to a national referendum, the pastoral directive said: "An honest exchange of ideas on the principles and values of the family cannot become for anyone a war of religion. "Through their daily contact with their people, the bishops are not unaware of the growing difficulties which afflict so many. The bishops know that the referendum alone cannot solve the problems of the Italian family." Stressing that the family united in a lasting union is for the betterment of society, the bishops urged Christians to join in "responsible participation in constructing a legitimate civil code" that will correspond to moral precepts and to the common good.

Pioneer Fremantle family link with "The Record"

He was the second of three generations of his family who were associated with the Fremantle prison. He was born at sea while his father (a convert to Catholicism) was journeying to Australia to become chief warder at the prison. He himself became chief clerk of the prison in due course and his family lived in a staff house adjacent to the prison wall. As a consequence. Mrs. Chauncy still remembers as a young girl being among, the few staff who were allowed to attend Mass when it was celebrated in the prison chapel by a visiting Oblate priest. The story was always kept in the family that Mr. Townsend was a foundation subscriber to "The Record" from the first issue of its publication in July 1874 and hence he had kept a bound volume of the early copies. His name appears in the paper as the Fremantle "agent", which he became on August 13, 1878.
PRINTING A second association with the early history of the paper is that Francis Townsend was a major in the Volunteer Rifle Force and one of his fellow officers was a member of the Bryan family. who were printers and who later took over the printing of "The Record" from the Orphan-

ROME (NC). — Covering and uncovering has been part of the history of Rome, at least since the decline of its imperial prosperity. insecure feudal In times people put brick and plaster over famous monuments to give themselves shelter. Temples were smothered under churches. palaces and fortresses. More strangely still, whole areas like the Roman Forum were buried under soil and became grazing grounds. Later, when the baroque style had become an obsession, venerable early Christian or medchurches ieval were thought too bare and chilly and given thick coatings of plaster and paint. In modern times the pendulum has swung the other way. Excavation has revealed what is left of the ancient splendors—Mussolini did this on the biggest and most ruthless scale—and some of the historic churches Santa like Sabina's, Santa Maria in Cosmedin and so on have been stripped of their fripperies
Temple
The temple of the Roman Emperor Antoninus and his wife Faustina in the Forum has lead a see-saw existence. In the 11th century they turned it into a church. It was stripped of Roman marble in the 14th century to help restore the Basilica of St. John Lateran.
In 1536 the Emperor Charles V came to Rome; the Roman decided he would rather see the imperial temple than the church so they stripped the church off. It revealed the temple portico. In 1602 they put the church back in a smaller form, leaving the temple front. That sort of thing is in the blood. In the fascist period some wanted to enclose the square in front of the capital. Besides the steps leading up to it there are two exits leading out towards the forum, so these • were closed by building extensions to Michelangelo's palaces in plaster-board.
Plastic now
Now the last step has been taken, into the age of plastic. One of the best-known openings in the wall with which the Emperor Aurelian surrounded the city as long ago as the 270s AD is the Porta Pint ciana. It stands at the top of the fashionable Via Veneto. The Byzantine General Belisarius strengthened it with huge towers against the Gothic invaders. The endless stream of cars rushes between them through two great arches. At the moment, the towers and the 30-yard stretch of wall between them are covered with
plastic sheets tied on with yellow ropes. The whole looks like a nightmare Christmas parcel. What is it all about? Delicate repairs going on underneath? Some politician fixing up a gimmicky apartment for a film star? None of these things.

Convent life without vows NEW YORK (NC). — The Convent of St Benedict at St. Joseph, Minnesota, is offering women the chance to experience convent life without taking religious vows. The invitation is part of a programme called Volunteers for Christian Service. Sister Ruth Nierengarten, the programme co-ordinator, said that the programme was started "to provide a channel for women who want to offer their talents in service to the Church on a temporary basis."
