Appeal supported by Archbishop The Lord Mayor's Appeal for contributions to relieve the hardship and misery consequent on the disastrous floods in Queensland and elsewhere in Australia, merits our quick and generous response. I give the appeal my full support and I trust that the answer of the people of Western Australia will be as prompt and positive as it was for those stricken by the contrary disaster of drought in Ethiopia. It is worthy of note that Western Australians, besides three medical teams, contributed over $261,000 in cash to that appeal; more than a quarter of the Australian total and more than any other State in the Commonwealth. Sister Patricia, he said. would work in conjunction with the Family Welfare Bureau. in line with its policy of expanding its attention to any group in the community who might have special needs. He noted that Archbishop Goody had been personally present at the discussions which preceded Sister Patricia's appointment and he had allocated initial financial support from the Archdiocese for this work. Father Hickey said that he hoped that the Catholic community at large would become conscious of this new avenue of apostolic work.

VATICAN CITY (NC) — Within hours of the signing of the IsraeliEgyptian pullback agreement, Vatican Radio said that the agreement raised hopes that all the problems plaguing the Middle East "can find a solution". First among those problems the Vatican Radio listed "the situation of thousands of persons, refugees from their land." It quoted Pope Paul's speech of December 21 in which he described those Palestinian Arab refugees as "in desperate conditions of life, or otherwise frustrated in their legitimate aspirations." Vatican Radio also cited the problem of the status of Jerusalem and the holy places of the Middle East. Again it quoted Pope Paul's speech, this time referring to "the special character of that city, unique in the world," and to "the rights and legitimate aspirations of those belonging to the three peat monotheistic religions which have sanctuaries in the Holy Land." Vatican Radio called the Israeli-Egyptian disengagement agreement "a first concrete result of the Geneva peace conference and of the intense diplomatic action carried out during these last days, especially in the countries of the agreement's signatories." That was a reference to U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger's negotiations in Israel and Egypt.

the Bishops' Conference
The following are some of the liturgical matters that were discussed at the recent half-yearly meeting of the Australian Bishops. The Institute for Pastoral Liturgy has been requested to review the Mass for Children in the light of the recent direc• dyes on children's Masses issues by the Holy See. The publication of the Mass for Children has therefore been dela.yed. Following the recent directives on children's Masses, the Bishops Conference gave approval to the use of recorded music in children's Masses, The new revised rite for the Anointing of the Sick (formerly Extreme Unction) is now finalised in English.
However, a change in the wording of the form of the rite has meant there will be a short delay in the issuance of the texts.
