College rector hopeful on co-educational project
THE POPE DEPLORES AIRPORT MURDERS
St. Thomas More College achieved a ninety per cent pass rate from its students this year, said the Rector, Father John Prendiville, S.J. this week. He referred to the particular success of Matthew Knuiman, dux of Trinity College last year, who this year secured the Weatherburn Prize for mathematics. Father Prendiville referred to these facts in a comment this week on the success to date of the enrolment of women students at St. Thomas More College for 1974. Early in December the College Board made a decision, later endorsed by the Archbishop, that the College would change from its historic all-male complement and admit women students. Father Prendiville said that it was hoped that the women would number 30 to 40 residents and become a substantial part of the student body, able to make a contribution significant on their own part to the life of the College. To advertise the new step, Father Prendiville travelled to the country centres of Geraldton,
New and Kalgoorlie Norcia to make contact with the girls' colleges there; he also wrote to all parish priests with high schools in their areas. So far, he says. the response has been "encouraging" but he feels that more people may wish to be informed of this new opportunity in university life. So far women students have been admitted to Currie Hall (nondenominational) and St. Columba's College (Presbyterian - Congregation al), in addition to St. Catherine's College for Women. Father Prendiville explained that the design of St. Thomas More College made it possible for a separate section of the middle wing to be made over exclusively to the use of the women students. Rooms are in selfcontained blocks of eight with their own independ-
VATICAN CITY (NC)— Pope Paul told a general audience that he deplored the possible adverse effects of the Rome Airport terrorist killings "on international situations right on the eve of the anxiously awaited prelude to an equitable peace in the Middle East." That was a reference to an Arab-Israeli peace conference scheduled to open in Geneva December 21. The Pope observed: "We would do well to ponder these mean. cruel episodes of current events, not to foster within us a desperate bitterness — and still less to dream unhappily of revenge — but rather to strengthen within us an unconquered optimism. "Our optimism must always turn to the affirmation of justice and peace. It must send us ahead, able to resort to humble and trustful prayer, in faith and charity." "Christmas is near. Let it not be hard for us to draw from this lowly event of mystery great and Christ's arrival in the world as our Saviour and our peace. the strength to hope and the power to love."
ent entrances and ablution facilities. Apart from that. the women students would take part fully in other college areas such as dining hall, library, television and recreation rooms, etc. Father Prendiville said that he hoped to have two women senior tutors in residence to be associated with the women students. The residential fee would be S25 per week. Father Prendiville said that he expected the presence of the women to add the degree of maturity and sharing of ideas that was the accompaniment of co-eduprogrammes cational these days. hoped he Further, that the presence of the women would add to his hope that the college become a genuine Christian developing community, especially a degree of concern for the world around it and especially the Third World.

His task in Fiji, he said, was to develop an integrated People of God among people who were of divergent racial background. He considered that the presence of the Church was essential to give values to such a society and to integration achieve this among the people of the Church itself. A large proportion of his Catholic flock was Indian and although he now had a local seminary with 33 students, whose construction was assisted by donations from Australia, he was still dependent on Indian students for the priesthood coming to work in Fiji where they could speak to the people in the Hindi which t he Indians spoke there. Australia was co-opei ating with development programmes in Fiji through Australian Catholic Relief which was assisting agricultural secondary schools to train people to a higher level of farming skill in order to keep them in their rural milieu and check the inevitable drift to the cities, he said: The Australian Bishops had held joint meetings with the Bishops of the Pacific area in order to assist with problems where at all possible. Although not applicable to Fiji where there was still undeveloped land, the combined Bishops' meeting had studied the question of migration for several overcrowded territories. On this score the Australian Bishops had made an approach to the Australian Government on the matter but nothing further had developed.

Brother Hughes journeys into the Murchison Departing from New Norcia (see The Record December 22) I got into the train between 2 and 3 p.m. to travel to Geraldton. I succeeded in picking up a pound from a Scotch Presbyterian fellow passenger who was indeed a fine specimen of an honest old highlander.
We are presenting what is regarded as a unique diary in t he annals of the Catholic Church in Western Austral ia that previously was only privately published in the pages of the "Christian Brothers' Educational Record" of 1399. It is the diary of Brother THOMAS HUGHES, a most versatile member of the Congregation of Christian Brothers who came to Australia shortly after the first foundation of the Brothers in Melbourne in 1868. The diary covers a short period in 1896 when he came to Western Australia specifically to collect funds for the Christian Brothers' College which had started two years previously and which was in course of construction. •
