The Prem,er commended on stand on pornography
The chairman of the Diocesan Pastoral Council, Mr. J. P. Shanahan, recently wrote to the Premier of Western Australia, Mr. Tonkin, commending the Premier's stand on the question of pornography. In his letter Mr. Shanahan said: "On behalf of the Executive of the Diocesan Pastoral Council of the Catholic Church in Perth, I wish to extend to you our appreciation of the public stand you have taken recently on the matter of pornography. "We do not advocate a return to strict censorship but we do feel that some recently published material does deserve further investigation. "We are concerned with Christian values, and with the general public attitude towards interpersonal relationships. Hence we sympathise with your attitude, and We share your concern. "It takes a particular kind of conviction and courage to speak as you have done on this matter. "We applaud this and we urge that you continue your stand." In a reply a letter from the Premier's Department said: "Because of the Hon. The picture above is of a home Mass. There was a little more than the usual degree of solemnity associated with such home Masses because it was a unique blessing of a particularly special home. Celebrant of the Mass was Father Barry Hickey, Director of the Catholic Family Welfare Bureau; co-celebrants were Father W. Clery, chaplain of McAuley Centre, and Fathers Corcoran and Cullen, of Subiaco parish. This explained the rather unique occasion, the opening of the first cottage home of the McAuley Centre, Wembley to be estab lished outside the campus of the Centre. Gathered around the altar are the cottage parents Mr. and Mrs. Ronayne. Among the children were their own three boys, Eamonn, Sean and Seamus, as well as their new family, Maria, Aileen, Heidi and Laurie, ranging in ages from 13 years to 22 months. Due to join the family later were sevenyear-old twins Peter and Graham. The cottage home, situated close to McAuley Centre was in
large part the bequest of the late Mr. J. Foley. The Sisters of Mercy made up the remainder of the value of the house and the Lotteries Commission provided the furniture and the painting of the house to equip it for its new purpose. All the children atCatholic tend the schools in the locality and the two pre-school children are cared for at home by Mrs. Ronayne. Sister Martin, of the McAuley Centre, explained that these particular children were placed in this cottage home because it was not likely that they would be rehabilitated back to their own families for some considerable time; so they would have the opportunity to relate permanently to a home of their own in a normal domestic atmosphere. More Homes Hopefully, if suitable cottage parents could be found, Sister Martin said she would like to see possibly two more such homes opened. She said that not every child was suited to this type of child care and some still needed the support of institutional life. The first step in the new programme was taken last February when the former St. Gerard's Hospital for unmarried mothers was converted into a cottage home for nine children, initially under the care of a Religious Sister and now in the charge of a widow, Mrs. Claire Devoy. Sister Martin said that the search and preparation of suitable parents for the task of running a cottage home was a continual one. It was still difficult to find Catholic interest in this facet of child care.
Parents The position of parents was advertised frequently through the classified advertisements of 'The Record'. After that it was a matter of closely screening the persons offering themselves, first, to help them assess their own maturtiy for the task. Sister Martin said. that often a couple initially thought it was a good step for them but after some discussion of the role they would have to play in the childrens' lives they came to a better understanding of whether they were suited. The next step was further counselling of the future parents until they were ready to be approved by the Community Welfare Department. 4 Once a cottage home was established a social worker called regularly to keep an interest in the children. The Sisters of Mercy at McAuley Centre would also keep in touch with the family. Sister Martin said that now that the Ronayne family had settled into their new life there would be a meeting shortly so that problems that might have arisen could be talked out in order to find a solution. Five orders of nuns to form "frontier" groups Five Melbourne congregations of Religious Sisters are to form "frontier groups" for special missions in four' of Melbourne's outer suburbs. Congregations taking part are Presentation, Charity, Brigidine and Mercy Orders. Working to a fiveyear plan, they will f oster and co-ordinate religious education in the areas, and then move on to new parishes to start similar work. Fr. Frank Martin, director of the Victorian Catholic Education Office, said this week that the scheme was designed to put religious orders "in their rightful place in the forefront of Catholic educational endeavor." All of them will work closely with the local clergy. Where possible, they will do catechetical and social work in the parish. The provincial superiors of the orders are entering into formal agreements with the parish priests of the four areas. The Sisters will live in houses that will be easily adapted to other parish uses when they leave.
