LONDON — Since their church was condemned five years ago, parishioners of Knighton, Radnor, Wales, have had to make return trips of up to 40 miles to attend the nearest church at Presteigne. Soon, however, work will start on a new church to replace the old building which, now derelict, was closed when architects advised that the floors could not safely hold the congregation when swelled by summer visitors. The new building will be on the site of the former upper room church. Parish priest Fr. Joseph Becker — who looks after both Presteigne and Knighton — said that the church could not be replaced earlier because of the tremendous task of raising money from a tiny Catholic population. "Without help which we still need from outside it would be impossible to contemplate building a new church." he said.
VATICAN CITY (NC). -- The fast dwindling number of priests had become "a real life or death question for the Church," the prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education told the Vatican's International Congress on Plans of Pastoral Action for vocations.

Plan for two new lay ministries WASHINGTON (NC). — The bishops of the United States have decided to ask Vatican permission to create two new lay ministeries — minister of music and catechist for the Church in this country. Both men and women would be eligible for installation into the ministries, which would give official Church status to persons who teach religion or are active in liturgical music. The action was a response by the bishops to a 1972 letter of Pope Paul which abolished minor orders of the priesthood and created new ministries open to laymen. The letter, Ministeria Quaedam (Certain Ministries) encouraged national conferences of bishops to suggest additional ministries. A significant aspect of the U.S. bishops' request was that it made no distinction between men and women. The request approved by the bishops cited as possible candidates for the ministry of catechist: • Properly prepared and qualified teach ers of religion. • Those who exer cise a supervisory capacity in religious education. • Directors and coordinators of religious education. Of the Minister of music the committee said: "This is a liturgical ministry, like that of readers and ecolytes. "It can be conceived broadly to include a number of functions in worship which are sufficiently distinct to deserve formal recognition."
