"Pilgrimage" churches in Holy Year
Quick church response on famine relief The Ethiopian famine disaster has produced a prompt and generous response from both individuals and Church bodies in the archdiocese.
Archbishop Goody has announced the Churches that will be the centres of pilgrimage designated for the obtaining of the Plenary Indulgence in the forthcoming Holy Year. Two of the churches are in the metropolitan area and five others in country centres. They are St. Mary's Cathedral, Perth, and St. Patrick's Church, Fremantle; St. Joseph's, Northam; St. Mary's, Kalgoorlie; St. Mary's Merredin; Our Lady of Monserrat, Southern Cross and St. Joseph's Norseman. In a letter addressed to the people of the archdiocese, the archbishop says: On the first Sunday of Advent the Holy Year for the Catholic world outside of Rome commences. The New Norcia Centre
The State Government has made a grant of $10,000 to the development of a cultural centre at New Norcia and the grant is matched by a similar sum from the Federal Government.
The Premier and Minister for Cultural Affairs, Mr. Tonkin. who handed a cheque for $20,000 to Father Bernard Rooney, Prior-Administrator of the Benedictine Monastery at New Norcia. said that the monastery, founded by Bishop Salvado in March, 1846, was itself a national treasure. The joint State-Federal contribution would be used to accommodate part of its collection for public display. The display would be housed in a renovated two-storey building at St. Joseph's Convent, on the Great Eastern Highway, in New Norcia. v. as convent The founded in 1847, as an orphanage for Aboriginal children. ed for by the monks until 1920, when the convent was taken over by the Spanish Benedictm e Sisters. No part of the original convent buildings were now extant, the oldest surviving section having been built by Bishop Torres in about 1913. The Benedictine convent is now vacant, the Sisters having moved to a new establishment at Girrawheen, in the metropolitan area. The monastery's collections of art, mediaeval books and manuscrips, and artifacts, contained some ancient and irreplaceable works, while the archives were a valuable source of referenc-

PHILADELPHIA (NC). — At 72, "Irish Rosie" Miller has engin. eered a highly successful one-woman circulation campaign for the Catholic "Standard and Times," the archdiocesan newspaper here. For almost half of the 35 years she has lived in Our Lady of Mercy parish, Rosie has operated a news the outside stand church. Last year she began to sell the "Standard and Times" and, largely through her efforts, its circulation in the almost all black parish more than doubled. A firm believer in the "hard sell" technique, she has been known to follow people down the street to sell a paper. "You have to be all business," she says, "but you have to be cheerful and interested in their welfare. I go up to them and I say: "Hi, there, honey bunch, howya doing? How about a paper today?" And they buy. "I'm not looking for anything. I'm just spreading the faith. I think bringing the people the word of God is a good way to help the Church." Helping the Church is nothing new to Rosie. She lives across the street from the parish buildings, and she often goes in to do odd jobs at the rectory. "Iburn the rubbish, make sure the doors are locked, the lights are out, and the supplies are in," she says. "Sometimes I help with bingo or go over to the Church and take the vigil of care lights." Rosie also crochets layettes, booties and socks and makes pretzel baskets and bookmarks to be sold at the annual fair at a residence for aged and infirm Sisters. Rosie is a self-educated woman, and proud of it. "I've been an epileptic sinceIwas six, and
the schools wouldn't take me in those days" she explains. "SoIread books and used the dictionary, and when I worked cleaning offices I listened to the secretar ies talking. You can always learn—if you ,vant to. "Nothing is impossible with God, and you don't have to be educated or popular to make a living; you just have to have the guts to find out how to get along."
A great-grandmother and a widow, Rosie is also proud of her independence.
"I don't ask anyone for a thing, especially the Catholics —they have enough to do with paying double taxes for the schools. I'd like to tell those men in Harrisburg a thing or two. "I have a daughter and son-in-law and grandchildren; I don't ask them for anything either."
