DILEMMA

NEW YORK (NC) The film company got its movie, the Sisters got a swimming pool, the parochial school children got small parts and everybody lived happily ever after. That's how the real life script turned out when movie makers took charge of the grounds of the motherhouse of the Dominican Sisters Congregation of the Holy Cross in the diocese of Seattle to film a remake of the French mystery classic "Diabolique". The director, Stewart Conway, said he chose the convent for the movie location because it looks like the boys' school in which the film is set. When the motherhouse was chosen, something had to be done right away to provide the film makers with what they needed. "We had to have a pool and we wanted to shoot our exteriors here. There was no pool, so we built one." When the shooting is finished, the $10,000 pool stays. Conway said, "The Sisters have been good to us and this is our donation to their community". Letter from Aunt Win Joint Anglican and A.B.C. religious programmes Dear Boys and Girls,

One of the very special prayers that we say is the one we say together at Mass. It's a special sort of prayer because we have to take our bodies as well as our souls to wherever the Mass is celebrated. If it is a cold morning, or if it is very hot we might think it would be better to stay in bed or stop in some cool place, but these are the sacrifices that people have always made to get to Mass. Some hundreds of years ago in England, the enemies of the Church showed a terrible hatred for the Mass. Not only the Mass but even any priest who was caught saying it was hated. The priests often were hidden in specially concealed places in the houses, called "priest-holes". The priest ran the danger of being put to death if he was caught but the people were prepared to run the danger of hiding him just to have the chance to assist at Mass. Margaret of England was a famous holy woman who sheltered many a pries,t in her house but suffered the final cruelty of seeing one captured in her house and put to death. And I am sure your teachers have told you of the early Roman Christians who had no other places to assemble than the underground burial grounds called catacombs. Where several of these tunnels came together often formed a large open space and there a handful of Christians could gather in peace and quiet. They were not allowed to have any public churches of their own and the Roman soldiers would never disturb a graveIt is all so different in Australia today. We have lovely churches everywhere about us and we can walk peaceful ly along the streets to Mass whenever we wish. There are countries, today where that is not possible . Isn't that a real privilege for which to thank God and a special reason never to miss Mass. Let us pray for each other at our next celebra tion of the eucharist. AUNT WIN
