Seminary Collection

The annual collection to cover the cost of maintaining St. Charles' Seminary, Guildford, will be taken up in all archdiocesan churches on Sunday, November 11. Founded in 1942, St. Charles' is the combined responsibility of the dioceses of Western Australia. The 76th priest to have studied at St. Charles' was ordained last month. At present there are 13 students doing philosophical and general studies in preparation for the priesthood. The archdiocesan share of this years expenses is about $15,000. Father Scott, C.M., rector of St. Charles', said that the total cost for the year of running the seminary was about $25,000. He explained that rising costs in the matter of food and salaries were the main pressures on such institutions today. He noted that there were two full-time workers and one casual domestic worker at the seminary and he considered it only proper that they should be able to benefit immediately from any increase granted in their awards, even though it meant passing on this cost to the people of the archdiocese who generously supported the seminary.
