LONDON — Television programmes of an "adult" nature, containing material likely to be offensive to children, should be delayed until after 10 p.m. instead of after 9 p.m. as at present, it is recommended in a report issued recently here. Bishop Taylor, an American Oblate, whose diocese covers the whole of Sweden (his visitations take him to the Arctic Circle) told me how the imaginative scheme had foundered. On a magnificent, central site overlooking a green which separates palace and harbour from shopping and business areas, there would have been an underground car park; a ground floor church with a solidly impressive entrance; three stories above let off as offices; a parish floor with library, coffee room, lecture room; top floor to accommodate parish clergy; a big courtyard where children could play. Not at least importance in this scheme was the coffee room. Every parish in Sweden, Catholic and Lutheran alike, makes a big thing of its "church coffee." They actually take the idea of a Christian community seriously, and they think that, like the early Christians, we should eat together, talk and be friendly. A new seminary for late vocations, has been opened in Kuching, Malaysia. At present there are eight men doing preparatory studies for the priesthood. The course offered is adapted to their particular scholastic situation after their former secular careers. The new seminary is named after St. Peter to preserve the name of the• former preparatory seminary that for 22 years occupied the same buildings. The full course of ecclesiastical studies is still provided at the College General, the major seminary in Penang. Opening the new seminary Bishop Reiterer told the people present that the shortage of vocations was their responsibility and not just that of the priests, brothers and sisters.

It seemed to me that we could study this scheme and adopt it, though. In cities where high-rise buildings are allowed, why don't we pull down wasteful, inadequate, old churches and build a block like this? But I would like to see a few storeys used for specialised housing
— fiats for single-parent families; for the handicapped; for the old. A rattling good youth club, properly equipped on another floor. A catechetics centre. Whatever specialised feature the particular district needed. And best of all, the car park and office floors would surely produce a revenue which would take care of a mortgage. Just imagine: a new Church with no debt problem and all around it, rooms humming with activity and everybody having a whale of a good time. And the heart of it all, a Mass-centre.
Adult Confirmation Adult Confirmation will be administered by Bishop Quinn in St. Mary's Cathedral on Friday, November 23. Adult confirmation is usually administered each quarter tense; however, it was not given in September and there will be no ceremony in December as is usual. Those wishing to be confirmed should have approached their parish priest to be properly instructed in the meaning and significance of the Sacrament. They should bring with them a card signed by him authorising them to receive the sacrament. It is essential that all persons attending be seated in St. Mary's Cathedral by 7.00 p.m. so that the practical details of the ceremony can be explained. Confirmation is conferred during Mass and candidates should be present from the commencement and receive Communion at the Mass.

Everyone agrees that teenage marriages represent a big risk of failure, says Father Barry Hickey, Director of Catholic Marriage Guidance. "The more difficult problem is to know what to do about meeting this growing problem." "The problem is so great" he adds, "that a good deal of preparation is necessary for these young people before entering into marriage. Referring to an item in The Record (October 18) stating that in Ogdensburg, New York, it will be compulsory for teenagers marrying to undergo counselling be fore being allowed to marry in the Catholic Church, Father Hickey said: 'It is a pity such conditions have become necessary but they are welcome steps and long overdue in many cases." "The time is fast approaching when we may have to face the same problem realistically here in Perth". He said that problem is being discussed by teachers, priests and married couples. At the end of this month a second meeting called by the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council to discuss marriage and preparation will be held. Father Hickey believes that it is quite likely that a recommendation will be put to the Archbishop suggesting that positive means be adopted to educate young people for marriage. It could be likely, he suggested, that some form of pre-marriage instruction be obligatory as is the case with those entering a marriage of mixed religion. The last programme for the year, of preparation for marriage for engaged couples, takes place at Trinity College, Perth, on Sunday. November 11. It is a full day programme commencing at 9.45 a.m. and concluding at 5 p.m. wiz= Mass is said for those who wish to remain. Those attending are asked to provide their own lunch; tea or coffee are provided. The programme combines discussion with lectures from counsellors, a priest and a doctor. Emphasis is placed not so much on supplying information for the future as assisting the young couple to understand their present relationship. It is believed that the way in which the cope with their personality and physical differences now will largely indicate how they will stand up to the unexpected pressures that will develop later in their married

Following the all-day conference a special session on natural family planning is given the following Sunday night at the St. John of God Maternity Hospital, Subiaco. The next conference will take place in January, 1974. It is hoped also in the new year to develop regional preparation programmes in addition to the central sessions.

An estimated 64 million people watched at least one of the four broadcasts." Wood said that what must be kept in mind regarding the protest to the "Maude" series is that the letters 'represented the fruits of one of the most highly organised, all-out, nationwide campaigns ever mounted against a particular programme."

Obituaries: The late Sister Gertrude Horne: Sister Gertrude Horne died at St. Anne's Hospital, on October 21, after a long illness. At the time of her death she was a member of the Kalgoorlie community of the Sisters of Mercy. Prior to he entering the Congregation, she was a teacher with the education department. Ten years after her profession, she became Novice Mistress. The remainder of her 47 years as a religious SLcter, were spent teaching at Coolgardie, Leonora, Kalgoorlie, Bunbury, Santa Maria and Victoria Park. She was superior of several of these communities. The eldest of five children, she is survived by four sisters, one of whom is also a Sister of Mercy. May God reward her.

The number of Catholics who attend Mass in the Christchurch diocese has slumped to only one in three. taken counts Mass throughout the diocese show that of the 78,000 Catholics only 26,000 go to Mass. The figures were produced at the meeting of the Diocesan Pastoral Council at Hotkitika.
